There are now a number of known health risks associated with spay and neuter in dogs: Urinary Incontinence, ACL injury, Hip Dysplasia, Hypothyroid Disease to name a few. Dr Jones discusses the PROS, and CONS of spay and neuter, including some alternatives, such as partial spay and neuter.

As a human's MD, i choose to spay my one year old Beagle with OSS procedure (hysterectomy). Considering Beagle is not a breed that prone developing many tumours (except maybe lipomas), ovarian carcinoma is so rare and 90% mamilary tumours are benign - i will keep her hormones intact while she will never got pyometra. Like you've said OH on dogs increased risk of spaying incontinence, hip dysplasia, osteosarcoma, diabetic, hypothyroid, and many other carcinomas and already proven by many studies. Recent study revealed that spay incontinence happened because of the involuntary urethral spincter got loose and all of this is because of the gonadal hormones, esp. Oestrogen disappeared. So much similarities between human and dog, because *THIS* also what exactly happened to human when their ovaries got removed, and i'm so glad there's a Vet who really shown the cons of Traditional Spaying and Castration like you.

A dog with a partial spay developed pyometra. A dog that was spayed too early developed incontinence. A few dogs that were never neutered developed testicular cancer. These are all cases that my friend's pets have gone through. I suppose every pet will respond differently to whichever course the owners take. So many options & so much information out there. It comes down to researching for yourself & using your discernment. Thank you Veterinary Secrets for giving us options.

Our family added 2 Lab. puppies to our home. A male & a female. They're 12 weeks old now. We'd planned to spay & neuter at about 6 mos. of age but, having listened to your advice, we'd definitely prefer to keep our kids as healthy as possibly so, spay & neuter is 'out'. Now our hunt will be on to find a doctor who can/will leave ovaries & testicles but sterilize. Here in Oregon the search is on! Thanks so very much for your channel & for being you. Blessings!

Recently saw another, older vid also about the myriad diseases/afflictions from spay and neutering. Having had 4 rescued pets who were all early neuters (and who each had resultant problems), I am very pleased to see another veterinary proponent of alternative routes, so thank you. Alot. Mine bitch has never been sick. I haven't done annual injections since she was three years old. She isn't chipped - apparently vets are finding tumours around the inplant. Not surprised!!! its a foreign body. I watch her carefully and give her all the attention while she is in season. No problems so far. Long may it continue. By the way I am in the U.K. and I had some very stuffy replies when making enquiries about a new vet for her. A case of if you won't take our advice - push off. But my present vet is lovely. He understands I will take advice on natural cures where ever possible and use Dr. Jones site for advice before taking her for treatment. He is fine with that but he is not out to make money and does treat dogs from rescue centres. He's a lovely young man. After the rip-off merchants he is a breath of fresh air. You know what is best for your dog and its you that will have to deal with the consequences should things go wrong. So unless its deadly serious I shall be keeping my girl whole.

One of my guys I rescued, was neutered in the hopes of making him less agressive. But the opposite happened and on top of his behavioural issues he has numerous food allergies, I truly believe it is connected to his neuter. On the other hand his brother littermate ,who I've had from a pup was never neutered, he is sociable and has no allergies at all. No coincidence.

It's not easy finding a vet who performs ovary sparing spays....in Illinois, there's only one. Fortunately for me, he was only about 30 minutes away. Had my Golden "fixed" with an OSS when she was 14 months old. Our dog had OSS done at 18 months (4 years ago) and she goes through what we believe to be some type of dog depression several weeks after her "heat cycle". We think it is about the time in her cycle that she would have had pups if she would have been pregnant. For about two weeks, she mopes and barely eats, until she snaps out of it. I haven't been able to find a good solution yet. Now, our other dog, who is totally intact is picking up the same behavior and I keep wondering if we should just get them both fixed or if there is some natural hormone support we can give them.
@debbieheine536
@debbieheine536 2 жыл бұрын
@@SamT26 So we had OSS on our Golden back in 2017. She has had what we call "false pregnancies" about seven times since then. One of the first signs is that she begins to whine or cry, for no reason. She walks around, crying, as though she's searching for something, which is when we give her a stuffed animal to care for. While she's usually rough with a stuffed toy, shaking it and ripping it's stuffing out, during this phase, she "cares" for stuffed animals, as though they were her babies; carrying them, licking them, and having them with her at all times. We refer to them as her babies, and they are not tossed about by us, or played with whatsoever. We treat them as if they were her babies, because she's treating them as such. Typically, she lays in the middle/lower portion of our bed, but when she's going through a "false pregnancy," she finds comfort laying up at the head of the bed, between our heads, and can't settle down for the night until she has all of her babies with her. This phase can last 2-4 weeks, and we know it's over when she begins shaking the babies as tho they were toys. That's when they go into the washing machine, and are put away until the next signs of a false pregnancy. I'm not sure Golden Retrievers ever get enough food to eat, so while I've not experienced a lack of eating, your dog may find comfort in having something to care for and to mother. As for your other dog picking up on the same behaviors, perhaps they are merely experiencing a natural mothering instinct, and being best friends, they're sympathetic to one another. I wouldn't get either of them fixed just yet. Hormones are strong, and theirs may be giving them feelings they can't control. At least you recognize the signs and if you can show them extra loving during these times, I believe you'll both benefit.

I just got this 4 month old kitten an OSS that I rescued a few weeks back. She was partially in heat at the time. 10 days later after the surgery and she is in full heat again. I don't know what to do? She is constantly bothering my male cat and keeping us awake at night. I rescued her from the streets of Puerto Vallarta and I plan on finding her a home in the USA or Canada asap. I don't think any new owner would be very happy about this. In Canada, I got my cat an OSS but she never has any signs of a heat cycle thereafter and It's been 4 years. She goes outside daily and she is fine. I am thinking my vet didn't keep the ovaries in with my cat in Canada. Will this kitten be able to go outside when she is old enough? Or do I get a full spay done? I believe animals need to go outside as well so need to make sure she won't take off while in heat. It's a difference between night and day between the 2 cats

Neutered male dogs tend to be more aggressive in general due to lack of hormones; creating insecurity. So it is not that your dog has more hormones, it is just that they have none and it messes with their mental health...even around other neutered dogs. So don’t worry about it. Just avoid neurotic dogs.

My old dog was neutered at 9 years old. He was I. For bladder surgery to remove stones and they said he had an enlarged prostrate and should neuter him. I said yes. He later developed cushings disease and cancer which ended up taking his life at 13. Do you think removing those important hormones caused the cushings disease and the subsequent cancer? If I could go back I wouldn’t neuter him knowing what I know now. My new female just went rough her fist heat. I am still researching before I go ahead with a spay if I do at all.

Thank you Dr. Andrew, wow that stunned all of us...you included. I could see how upset you were by the expression on your face, and the tone of your voice. Well at least thanks to you we're not going to let that happen again. Live, and learn. I'm fighting the Obesity thing with my Ashy girl, and she's on a diet. Of course she still takes your advanced K9 formula. That seems to be helping her with her hips, and itchy skin. The SPCA Spayed her when she was only 7 weeks old, before they put them up for adoption. With it affecting the pituitary gland makes you wonder if that's what caused our dogs to have such problems. May God bless you for bringing this out, I know it had to be hard on you. Blessings💝

I felt the same as you with my male cats and tried EVERYTHING under the sun. When all else failed they got snipped and it was honestly the Best thing I ever did. I wouldn't wait too long or they make their behavior a habit even after. My kitties were close to one year of age so I was happy they got at least that much time to let hormones develop. Probably not much help but if I got more kitties I would do it all over again. I will never own an unfixed pet again after what we went through. I honestly think they go through too much stress and anxiety with their instincts being to hunt and mate and not being able to for good reason of course and they can cause problems being under than much stress all the time. At least that's how it was with our cats.

*Question: Off topic, however. You're the only person I trust to give honest opinion. My 8.9 year old female pomeranian has had BOTH sides, where kidneys are, become very enlarged, & hard. Very. This was first pointed out by vet when only one side was about 50% the size/hard compared to now, when she had to had teeth cleaned, one year ago. He said he had NO idea as to what it was. He wanted her to have surgery. I did not have the money to do so. I'm still on fixed income. Is her problem kidney disease? If so, WHAT can I do to help her? I've always appreciated your down-to-earth, candid replies, & teaching. I hope you have a wonderful week. Thank you.*

What is their diet? If they are on commercial food it is a big source of disease as well because there are a lot of things in commercial food that does not belong in an animal's body. If you can slowly transition your pet to a raw diet for dogs, that may help in their recovery. Commercial food is toxic in the long term. As is ongoing booster shots when you can give the animal natural vaccines by mouth called Nosodes.

Rescued a 7 year old dog. Was told she was fixed. She went through a heat from hell! She was a corgi with a very furry tummy and I could see part of a scar, so I just assumed. Heat was the hardest I've ever experienced, and I've had other female dogs go through heat early many times. So, after her heat I scheduled a spay. She immediately was having trouble urinating. Squats and just a few drops come out. She even starts whining and trying to run away. Her behavior also changed in a drastic way. I had been working to make her a therapy dog since she loves kids, I thought she would be perfect in a hospital setting. She went from being curious and outgoing... to becoming afraid of mundane things. Cars, birds and almost any noise. I checked all the boxes for a depressed dog. I wish I had known there were options. 😞

His blood work was perfect prior although he has a lot of lumps here and there. I am concerned what was benign may now become cancerous. Should I be worried at his age as I live him so much and i have guilt in regards to his injury. He is doing amazing though considering it's been less than a week . Thank in advance.

We were told from a breeder where we got our French Bulldog to wait until his growth plates were closed before neutering him and to have an xray done around 1 yr of age to see if they've closed. What are the pros and if any cons of this? Would love if you could do a video commenting on this issue. This was never told to us before when we purchased a female french bulldog from her 5 yrs ago. My previous male pups I kept intact since I knew for 💯 certainty I cld keep them from reproducing and I felt it was important for their health to keep them so. But now I have a female, which iv never had a female dog before so I am now researching this topic. I feel it's a necessity since they can have serious health issues if kept intact. She is only almost 6mos old rt now and this is the first Iv heard of any other options than being spayed. I was going to wait till she was at least 1yr old or so before spaying her.. but now I have more questions than I wld love ur take on. I assume she wld no longer have a heat cycle if she got a partial spay? I'm very concerned abt her being over weight in her lifetime since she's a tiny pomchi. I just want to do what is best for my dog.

If you get the ovarian sparing spay she will still have a heat cycle minus any blood or chance of getting pregnant... depending on the dog it's not usually too bad though. A lot of female dogs don't really act unusual during that time, it's more the males around them that do.

Thank you for all the information . A OSS IS VERY EXPENSIVE. I just got a quote from a vet of $2300.00 . Can range from 2000.00 to 5000.00. Needless to say I'm saving up for it. Between species appropriate diets, Titers, pet insurance etc. Most people wouldn't be able to afford owning a dog. Vet says any time now. Is it possible she will or has and I will never know when it happens? Is it possible for a female to never go into heat? I still think I will wait till she's 2yrs old to spay. I believe what this man is saying. The problem is that very, very few vets know how to perform partial spay or neuter, and are not interested in learning how. And almost all vets still repeat the same old mantra of advising conventional neutering at a young age. It seems that very few vets over the period of a 30-40 year career even make an effort to keep informed of new research developments in veterinary science. Recently, one vet I spoke to about the subject of this video actually said he thought this resistance to change was at least partly money driven.
@tammymcleod4504

For sure it'd be money driven... think of all the $$$ they'd not be getting due to procedures relating to cancer (diagostics, chemo, radiation, etc), patella luxation, hip and elbow dysplasia, cruciate ligament damage, etc, etc, etc.... thousands and thousands of dollars worth of surgeries/treatments/medication right there!!!!

This might be a really dumb idea, I'm not a vet, but what about having clips put on the ovarian tubes (or however it works) the way they do in humans to prevent pregnancy? Then nothing is removed but egg release is blocked? I really appreciate this information, btw. When I adopted my Rotti/lab cross at around 13-14 years, she had just torn one ACL. The vet told me she had torn her other ACL previously. Since I've had her she has eaten chicken broth every day plus a cooked food diet (no grains, just grass fed/free ranged meat and organic vegetables) and up until last year still ran like a young dog (she is now 18 or 19 years old). I believe the chicken broth lubricated her joints and that it was the dry dog food her previous person was giving her that dried out her joints and led to the ACL tears (although she is spayed so that plays a role too, according to the above information).
