This 2015 Chevy Cruze Turbo has 235k miles on it, and the owner has run out of options to get it running right.
Both the DEALER and the Parts Cannon have FAILED to fix this severe ROUGH running RICH condition.
Let's start from scratch, log some live data, and see what's going on.
Can we do this diagnosis from the driver's seat?

Had an engine swap at a JDM shop for a very fair price engine and labor included. They did a great job swapping the engine but when it came to diagnostics, the car was running almost 20% rich on the LT, I was explaining to the mechanic what Short and Long fuel trims are and he wouldn't believe it where I pin pointed it down to faulty injectors. He swallowed his pride after trying to say to put a new gas gap or MAF jsut from a rich code and finally listened to me, took some injectors from a different car and voila, my problems were solves. It's hard to find good mechanics and not jsut part swappers these days.

A good SCANNER will save the day. I recently had similar experience with Mitsubishi MAF sensor. Brand new, $525 OEM sensor from dealer had a glitch. Right away i felt, smelt and SAW the glitch on scanner at cruise. It's easy to assume that MAF sensor is "good" because it's "new", so I was afraid i missed something when i called the MAF sensor the first time (maybe loose pin fit or something else sneaky). I spent another 3 hours redoing diagnosis, leaving NOTHING to the imagination, and concluded that the NEW, DEALER PART was defective. It was a brawl at the parts counter; even escalated to parts Manager and walked him through all my steps. He REFUSED to swap it. So, i bought an aftermarket Blue Streak, installed it, CAR FIXED. I called the parts manager, told him I'm coming with his junk for REFUND, and if he refuses, I'll see him in small claims court, and I'll be adding all my TIME (~6 hours) to claim. I GOT THE REFUND 😅. Car has been gone a few weeks, and even passed CA smog test since repair 👍.

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics: I've been having good luck with STANDARD IGNITION stuff when OE is a budget buster for customers. IRONICALLY, i convinced the customer to bite the bullet and go with the OUTRAGEOUSLY PRICED OE MAF sensor to avoid EXACTLY WHAT OCCURRED. DOH! The Blue Streak was only ~$160ish, so customer saved $400; he definitely didn't complain about that. Perhaps the Universe took pitty on the guy through me. Oh well, another day at the office 😁👍.

@@hightttech I have seen dealership prices come down significantly from 5 years ago when I was an EIT technical writer working for FoMoCo. When I first branched out on my own I would go to dealerships when critical parts were needed. There's a dealership row with most manufacturers 3kms away so I could get cars out same day. Terrible warranty service and the still high prices have forced me to keep cars sitting for days waiting on OEM parts from online. It was upsetting for me to be treated poorly as a customer at Ford after working for them for 17 years and ascending the ranks. Now my 2nd option is to go get used OEM parts from a salvage yard that's 6km away if a customer approves.

Ivan; there are counterfeit Bosch O2 sensors out there. I have run into them, ordering them online vs buying them (at a MUCH higher price) from the box stores. I actually did a callout and an expose on those on my little KZfaq channel for my S10 truck. They are the same part number, come in a valid looking Bosch box, but have different wire colors and the wires are different lengths, and a different color sheath. I showed putting them in, what the data looked like, replacing with the "real" ones, and what that data looked like. Beware of the cheap online O2 sensors.

That's a decent deal in the think tool pros. I paid almost $1,100 when I got mine. But I also picked up the printer and TPMS tool as well. Insurance companies love to see pre and post diagnostic reports. I was watching the live data and was noticing the upstream sensor was switching oddly slow. While the downstream sensor looked like it wasn't doing much at all. Those cruze's upstream sensors normally switch really fast when they are working correctly. The best tools in the world won't help you if you don't know what to look for. Thankfully, Ivan does. Nice work on the diag Ivan.

Nice video! Minor quibble - my understanding is when the flapper valve goes out, it allows the boost pressure from the manifold into the crankcase. So it's high pressure, not high vacuum. The high pressure will rupture the PCV valve in the valve cover as well and causing oil leaks at various seals. It can even cause the seals to "chirp".
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Жыл бұрын
I think it causes both scenarios since the intake manifold is now connected straight to the crankcase haha
@russellhltn1396
@russellhltn1396 Жыл бұрын
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Indirectly. The valve is there to act as a one-way valve. It prevents a pressurized intake from going into the crankcase. When in vacuum, the valve opens and allows the crankcase fumes to enter the manifold to be burned. The valve in the valve cover regulates the vacuum. However, if the flapper valve is missing, turbo pressure will rupture the valve in the valve cover. It's possible at this point you may have high vacuum at idle when it comes in for service. So, high pressure at first, but then high vacuum after a cascaded failure.

I think it's hit and miss with them: some are good, others aren't. There are some channels here on KZfaq run by dealership techs and they're good too. But yeah it's reasonable to expect nothing less than the best from them, so when they drop the ball it's doubly terrible.

I worked a couple of years at used car dealers. We get few of these engines running roughly and whistling One time we replaced the belt tensioner because removing the belt the whistling was gone But soon we started the engine after replacing the tensioner the whistling come back . The seal was weak ,letting a vacuum leak through the crankcase .

Its unfortunate but a lot Dealerships lost a lot of good Mechanic's during COVID, DUE TO NO WORK. And now taking your vehicle to them is a crap shoot.

The dealership has always been a crap shoot. They get a lot of trade school grads with no experience, guys that rely on guessing and pattern failures to beat flat rate, and guys that are incompetent at troubleshooting. Never enough MASTER TECHS.

All those data pids are on many of the inexpensive diy scan tools, i guess my point is that this wasn't that hard to diagnose for an average mechanic.

Hi Ivan, my concern is why did the dealer installed O2 sensor fail? did some one use the wrong silicone sealant? Lots of questions about the root cause. time will tell. Rich

With regard to scanners here in AUS we are limited because of the now defunct vehicle manufacturing industry & most scanners won't work on locally buit vehicles I had to buy a Topdon scanner as it was the only one I could afford that covers all of my vehicles.

Fun facts for the players at home. In Australia the entire cruze/astra line up in all its iterations with the auto box are avoided and discarded like they're the plague. I've never seen one last past 150km (90 miles). In manual, they are lovely to drive but the 14 turbo like this are renowned for oil usage and ultimately killing pistons and ring lands. Many, not even making it to 50km (30,000 miles). The cause was identified as super knocking with a bulletin released by the factory to use a specific type of oil resistant to knocking when burned and a much reduced service interval. In short, the 2 door hatch back astra is a blast to drive. A great looking car, but worthless in our market. Especially since Holden died (gm pulled out of Australia)

I've had trouble with the Bosch on my 1990 Ford Taurus 3.0. It likes the Denso ones that have a more open grating. I think the Bosch's had a small slit that would clog or something. Anyway, not all parts are equal so either OEM or make sure the aftermarket one isn't part of the problem 👍
