This clean 2006 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L recently started acting up...misfiring, bucking, loss of power.
Owner fired the "tune-up parts cannon": new ignition coil pack, CMP distributor, and CKP sensor.
Initially the Jeep ran great, but now it has an excessively LONG CRANK TIME and the Check Engine Light is flashing! Lots of trouble codes set, including P0335 and P0300.
Let's DIAGNOSE what is actually wrong with this Jeep, and see if the Parts Cannon got the owner in trouble...

I put a Dorman OEM blend door actuator in an '08 F150. It ran through the learn sweep fine, but in use, when I turned the temp to full hot, the actuator stripped its gears at the end of the range. Ran the relearn multiple times, same result. Swapped it at The Zone for another one, same results. Dorman tech support said to do the re-learn again, which I did just to humor them; then they said "Huh. That should have worked." And no further reply. Returned the second Dorman to The Zone and bought an OEM actuator from RockAuto instead.

As the owner of an '05 Caravan (3.3L, 120k mi) I'm familiar with strange ECM behavior. At some point over these last 15 years, I believe ours experienced a "power event" that either damaged hardware or corrupted firmware. Or maybe a cheap sensor (replaced at least 3 times by a pro). Beyond a recurring check engine light, the vehicle runs/behaves fine so I just reset it and live with it.

Those early 2000s engine modules would crack the solder joints on the board, or crack the board, if you flexed the connectors a little you could duplicate the stalling or misfire concerns.

Also to add, under functional test or system tests, perform a cam/crank resync. I believe it will perform it eventually after a few key cycles, which is why it may have gone away. O2 sensor heater codes, check main power fuse for the heaters. I believe this PCM pulses a ground to the heater while there is a constant 12v power feed going to the heaters which is why the detection logic can tell the heaters aren't working without 12v present. hopefully it's not an intermittent issue for the customer.

@@GraditelMacedonia It's performed through the scan tool, typically under special functions/system tests/activation tests or whichever terminology the scan tool manufacturer uses. Typically only performed when the cam sensor or crank sensor is changed. @@GraditelMacedonia it's not an actual resynchronization, since there's no way physically for the waveform to unless there's a major problem lol. Just the verbiage manufacturer uses. @@GraditelMacedonia if I had the speculate, since there are probably different manufacturing tolerances, by using the scan tool to tell the PCM "hey I have new sensors", the PCM isn't doing guess work on whether or not the sensors are the same. Since only a technician would have access to that, I think it just speeds up the process once a sensor is replaced to have the PCM learn the sensors characteristics versus going through multiple key on engine running cycles. Plus thinking about it too during manufacturing, they don't have the time with a car coming off the assembly line every 10 minutes to go through multiple ignition cycles. Just a speedy way to get things assembled and working together and out the door

From comments you, Eric O, Rainman Ray, Watch Wes Work and a few others I have watched, Chryslers seem very particular about non OEM sensors. I personally have in the past and would continue to only put OEM on my Land Rover Discovery, I fear anything European would also not like non OEM. I have an old Nissan Tiida (I think it is a Versa in the USA) that I just bought as a daily driver - anything other than necessary OEM will go in it, and when I say necessary OEM, I mean pats that are not available aftermarket. It is a beater for around town only, with my main concern being it drives, stops properly (no skimping on brakes), good tyres ( no re-treads) and the air conditioner and power steering works. Oh, and my dog loves it!!

I would have liked to see some voltage measurements on the heater circuits. It looks like they all share a ground at G105 and are fed power from the PCM. G105 is used for a ton of different items so I don't suspect a bad ground but a shorted heater could possibly wreak havoc.

(I'm only 1 min into the video). I had a problem similar to this on a 99 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 I-6. The guy before me had the distributer off by a tooth and also had the cam sensor wires cut and hacked into for some reason. I even had to buy a new connector for the cam sensor.. I bought new cam and crank sensors-- and it was still intermittent; until I pulled the crank sensor again and re-mounted it. I guess it's sensitive to the depth.. I believe the aftermarket junk crank sensor had a washer on it, and was causing the reading to be too weak-- so I removed that washer, which allowed it to sit deeper into the port, and that cleaned up the issue.. It was actually a very reliable engine after that problem. I even bought a used coil pack on ebay for it too (it was super cheap); just for piece of mind. I kept the old one for a spare. But like I said, it never gave me any trouble after that. I really like the 4.0.

From personal experience I can say with 100% certainty that any sensor, module, relay, etc that is not OEM MOPAR will cause an issue somewhere down the road. These Jeep ECMs are extremely picky as to what it will accept and aftermarket is generally not accepted. I always disconnect the battery terminals and touch them together for a minute after installing anything electrical. Oddly enough, even with new OEM it still may take two relearn procedures to run correctly (just had this happen recently when I installed a TPS sensor on my 98 4.0 TJ Sport). Not sure why, but it's a Chrysler, so......

@basshunter428
@basshunter428 Жыл бұрын
@@PalkiaDialgaGiratina It undoubtedly has something to do with voltages and resistance but exactly how it (the ECM) goes about determining a good signal from bad is beyond my scope. I bought an OEM (reman) set of injectors because I had one leaking from the housing. I did my usual due diligence and disconnected both battery terminals before removing the old ones and then installed the new (reman) set. I hooked the terminals up twisted the key, and I get a long crank and a studder then dead. Tried again, same result! So I go online. All the blogs/forums I see point to an issue with Ohms, so I check every one to see if they fall within spec, and they are all dead nut 12 Ohms which is well within spec! So, I put all the old ones (which were 12.4 Ohms) back except the leaky one for which I substituted the reman injector. Same procedure, engine started up and ran like a top! No codes, perfect. Now I have 5 reman injectors that I can't figure how to install! About a month later I decide to swap in two more (drive cycle was complete). Swapped them in, and no issues. Drove it for another month and went after the rest. I finally got it to accept all 6, I just spead out the install. Go figure! I'll just add that all ground points, chassis, frame, engine, etc had been cleaned or replaced with a better grade prior, so it wasn't a ground issue.
@PalkiaDialgaGiratina
@PalkiaDialgaGiratina Жыл бұрын
@@basshunter428 Weird. Seems like there was some sort of adjustment period involved. My amateurish guess states that with the 5 original and 1 reman, all the inputs and outputs were within acceptable parameters, compared to changing all 6. Then after you finish the drivecycle, where the new injector has been "broken in" so to speak, you add a couple more and then repeat, with the PCM having to adjust a small amount to the new parts each time.
@basshunter428
@basshunter428 Жыл бұрын
@@PalkiaDialgaGiratina That is my suspicion. I also had to replace the distributor (entire housing) because the previous owner had snapped one of the mounting screws off (the steel/aluminum combo is a bad idea) and Crazy Glued it back on! So I bought a CROWN replacement. After installing the new one the engine started and ran with a bad misfire. I thought I might have installed the distributor a tooth off. After checking numerous times it became apparent that the distributor was installed correctly, so I swapped the old CPS for the new one. It cranked right over and has been running fine ever since. The ECM would not accept the aftermarket sensor! I believe the ECM is possessed but I've learned to live with it because the engine is a beast! 💪😆

No idea of those computer internals, but I thought of an old problem from 20 years ago: opto-isolators [often used for noise rejection benefits] need a high impedance load on the output, or may fail. A check engine light [or any indicator bulb] does not qualify. These chips need to be used to bias a transistor circuit on, which will drive a higher current. What happened to me was if a fault indicated for something past one hour, an internal short developed which prevented reset. The only load on the "fault" output was one indicator light [less than one half amp draw]. No relays, pullup resistor, or anything paralleled: chip output, to lamp, to return. Failure was guaranteed - kind of like some mallory distrubutors when ignition gets left on, but engine not running... and the rotor happens to be where slot triggers output/return connection.

OH man I had the EXACT same problem on a customer's 06 Wrangler Rubicon. Battery wasn't charging. Customer put 3 alternators in it before it came to my shop. I found a broken ground wire on the eyelet on the passenger side of the engine block (Behind the crank sensor). I poked it with my finger and the engine stalled. Repaired the ground and check engine light was on for all 4 O2 sensor heater codes. I somehow fried the PCM when I poked the ground (7 wires on one eyelet). I spent a couple wasted hours trying to prove it every which way. I could even command each O2 heater on with the scan tool and they each put out the correct amperage, that's why I was hesitant because I've only heard of Chryslers frying the drivers internally, not some kind of weird ass logic fault. I sent the PCM out to a place in Iowa that fixes them and for $150 it was all fixed! Rubicon PCM's are NLA and have been for many years. Loved the video!

Weird about Dorman electrical parts. I replaced the intermediate steering shaft in my Toyota with a Dorman one, and it's actually better than the OE one, they designed it to avoid the fault with the OE one. Some of their mechanical parts are really good, shame they can't make sensors. Maybe they don't? I wonder if they're just rebranding stuff. Maybe they actually make some of their mechanical parts but just outsource sensors so they can broaden their product line?

I see rigged battery terminal/s at 13:18 looks like wires added to ground and a screw or something wedged in beside a bad terminal. that is guaranteed random death and endless issues on all the Chryslers. just clipping your test lead on may have fixed it enough, could have been pin/ECM issue. but they do all sorts of bad things with flaky battery terminals, even perfect looking aftermarket terminals will often cause issues.

The 05 and 06 Wranglers frequently experience PCM issues. Call Mark at Wranglerfix to help with a diagnosis. He has identified an alternative Chrysler PCM and programs them to these Jeeps. I and many others in the Wrangler TJ community have had great experiences with Mark and the Wranglerfix PCM replacement.

Maybe it was just a bad connection at the PCM.. and since you unplugged it and messed with it-- it's fine now. At least that's what I'm always thinking. lol.. I never trust the connections; I would friction test every pin on those connectors before firing the PCM parts cannon.

This. The circuit code would be because the ECM is not seeing 12V on the heater circuit. ECM switches the ground. Could be cracked solder joint. Could be a blown fuse (or other feed issue) on the power side. I assume Ivan checked power off camera. I'm with you since this is on all 4 circuits.

Those older jeeps have terminal problems on the ecm. And I've seen those junk sensors do that a lot. Work one time and that's it. Unfortunately as a tech, all I can really do is persuade the service writer that we need to get oem. But like always, the service writer comes back out complaining how the customer was crying about the price so there's an auto zone special on its way.

I am going to take a wild, I mean wild guess here at only 2:15 seconds in. The distributor could have been installed incorrectly. The CAM (or Camshaft Fuel Speed Sensor, also called Pulse Ring, Camshaft Sensor, or synchronizer) can be set to either a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder when distributor is installed.. I think Ivan said this was a 6 cylinder (4.0L). It will still run if set to 4 cylinder, but not very good and have long crank times. Again, this is a completely wild guess just to see if the guess was right. If I am wrong, I will remove the comment as it adds nothing of value to the folks who might read this. Additional information, a toothpick or some similar device should be temporarily placed into the PULSE RING SHUTTER, when installing the distributor. There are two possibilities, one is a hole for a 4 cylinder (2.5L) and one is for a 6 cylinder (4.0L). If installed in the wrong one the vehicle will run, sometimes at first very good, but then will sooner or later start running very poorly. Again, I would like to stress this is just a complete wild guess, and is probably not the issue here, but maybe it will help someone installing a distributor in a Jeep. If not, I will delete this comment.
