JenniferESL BTW. i have a big probleme with my son trying to teach him how to write stories, pragraphs, reports and so on, he´s a 3rd grader.

Start small and then build. Make sure he can write clear sentences. Then teach him ways to organize sentences: by time, by order of importance, by comparing/contrasting, etc. Watch audio books/stories on YT together and talk about the elements of a story: characters, setting, plot, climax, resolution. Talk out short, simple stories together before you ask him to write one. You can also take turns building a story, each contributing a line or two. :) Make it fun! Good luck.

Very well done, Jennifer. The complexity of syntax in English organised in a simple and easy to understand video. "words have a function", and "syntax is ordering of words". The narrations and captions, and the flow diagrams are perfect. We are so lucky to get all this free! (For me, it is a revisit to school days many decades ago. As of now, the lessons provide the frame to me for understanding languages. My current passion is Persian). Looking forward to the remaining two parts.

I learn new topics today about determiners and reciprocal pronouns. Years learning English, but never before had I had such a complete lesson, so well explained. Hi Claire. I know there are some grammar nuts out there like me. :) I guess you're one of them. But as much as I like grammar, I do believe it's possible to be successful without knowing all the terminology. Learners are different. I think it's useful for many language learners to see how language breaks down and talk about how words fit together. For those who don't love all the terminology, I wanted to make a video that wasn't too scary and had soothing music. I'll complete Parts 2 and 3 in April. Take care!

I went back to my books that I taught from at 12. The anecdotes were fun to read. An Englishman Australian n an American taking pride of how fast their trains were. .. so fast that looking out of the window made telegraph poles look like a fence.. etc. The Australian described:From Sydney to Melbourne we passed some flocks of sheep n fields of potatoes,cabbages , n carrots. We went so quickly that I thought it was an Irish Stew.

The short explanation is that direct objects are object of verbs. They follow the verb. (see YOU, eat FOOD, drink WATER, learn ENGLISH, etc.) Indirect objects are objects of prepositions. hi Jennifer, watching your video because I'm re-learning grammar for my Tefl course. Love your calm demeanour and easy to understand explanations. I'm a bit confused about possessive determiners though as they seem the same as pronouns. What actually is the difference?

Hi. Possessive adjectives come before a noun: my, your, his, her, our, their >> my car, your book, etc. Possessive pronouns replace a noun: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs >> This is my pencil. That's YOURS. (yours = your pencil) Pronouns can function as subjects or objects. MINE is yellow. YOURS is white.

Wow. Determiners😍loved it. ... Respected Madam ..I also watched your 4 videos on phrasal verb...useful but my mother tongue is Hindi language and as you know there are so many phrasal verbs so how can I remember and get every question correct?

Learn a small set of phrasal verbs at one time. Learn in which situations they are often used. Pay attention to the grammar and review regularly. Reading helps pull everything together.

Could I know why definite article is used with the word" horizon". The ocean is full of sea and beauty. When clouds appear on the horizon, they sometimes look like mountains.

Things that are unique use the definite article: the horizon the equator the North Pole, the South Pole

Some words can belong to more than one category. For example, "another." Hello Juan. The subject is what the sentence is about. It can be a person or thing. Nouns are often our subjects, but we can also use pronouns, gerunds, infinitives, and noun clauses as our subject.

I put demonstrative adjectives in the category of determiners because they go before a noun and they help us identify or determine what or who we're talking about. See 14:31 in this video. However, any kind of pronoun functions like a noun. So pronouns can't be determiners.

Yes, time expressions fit into the category of adverbials. They're often flexible in terms of word order. Last summer we went to South Dakota. We went to South Dakota last summer. >> However, notice how place usually comes before time. I mention that rule in my series on prepositions.

Yes, that's true. It could be used with -es, but I feel the irregular form is used more often in American English. When I was in school, we learned "buffalo" as the singular and plural form. Here's the entry for "buffalo" in the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English. Possessive adjectives = possessive determiners: my, you, his, her, its, our, their Yes, they are all determiners. However, possessive pronouns are different: mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs. They can stand alone in place of a noun. 1) my book = possessive adjective + noun 2) yours = possessive pronoun

ABOUT is always a preposition. I'd say the first prepositional phrase functions more as an adverb ("think") and the second is more like an adjective ("series").

"Buffalo" can be singular and plural. "Lion" is a regular noun, so you must use -s to form the plural. Some people use "buffaloes," but I personally don't.

You can use "some people" and a negative verb: Some people don't like to read. Some people aren't interested in history. Etc. This contrasts with "others." >> Some people don't like to read. Others can't live without books.

Did you mean a phrase with a determiner? I would see that as VERB + OBJECT. The object can be a noun phrase with a determiner: see the man write a letter try a few tasks

Today a question arose in my mind and that is "can we use a pronoun form as a noun, or can we use a noun form as a pronoun?" For example we can use ing form as verb, as adjective and as a noun/gerund. Can same be the case with Nouns and pronouns?

Pronouns and nouns are completely different parts of speech, but they can function the same way. They can both be subjects or objects. The -ing form of a verb can be a gerund (which behaves like a noun) or a present participle. Does that make sense?
