I don't think the problem is inherent to pontoons and a few minor mods would give me confidence offshore in one, as the guy showed. Mainly, keep the center of gravity low, despite the high floor, and perhaps reinforce the railing panels forward so they can keep out waves. His port side forward railing panel was missing; probably blown out by a wave on an earlier trip, as was the forward railing gate if it ever had one.

Ahoy there, I’m a captain based out of Ladner, British Columbia and we have a bar. It is called Sand Heads and this is where the Fraser river meets the sea. For the girl I would’ve made sure everyone is behind the wheelhouse. To me that seems like a wind over current situation and for that I would not have dealt with that at the specific tide… The Fraser River main channel is only about 30-40ft deep in parts, sometimes when you have a ebbing tide and a northwesterly wind the waves can be pretty big!

Good bar crossings coming in, especially that pontoon boat. I would not have taken it out in that weather but it is what it is. Follow the wave in, don't overtake the wave and get stuffed going over the falls, or get pushed by the following wave which could turn a boat sideways with unwanted results.
@erichammond9308
@erichammond9308 Жыл бұрын
🤣🤣🤣 there's a bar? Where? I see nothing but 4 foot chop. You want to see an actual breaking bar, you're around 400 miles too far south, or on the wrong coast! You Florida boys crack me up!
@thomasmaughan4798
@thomasmaughan4798 Жыл бұрын
@@erichammond9308 "or on the wrong coast! " Yes. I'd love to see some of these blokes at any of several Oregon coast river bars. But there's a similarity; outrushing water meets incoming waves. That's why the photographers are there to catch "stuffings" one after another. The fun isn't on the way out (well sometimes) but on the way in overtaking one of these high waves and diving into the next.
@erichammond9308
@erichammond9308 Жыл бұрын
@@thomasmaughan4798 if you are stuffing the bow you're doing it wrong! That's not "fun", it's stupid and dangerous! As I said - one day you'll get in actual breaking bar conditions, do that and your bow will stop and the stern will rapidly overtake the bow - straight above, and it's called "pitch polling", to port or starboard it's called "broaching", and unless you are in a self righting self bailing motor life boat your boat is destroyed and any one aboard is most likely dead.
