Passenger, Freight, Mail and Test at Carlisle
plus Great Britain XV
15 - 18 April 23
A real variety filmed over four days!
The first clips were recorded whilst I was waiting for a train.
Then out at Cotehill I caught the Network Rail New Measurement Train complete with newly repainted 43277. The end credits show it again at Wetheral but sadly lacking sound.
Freightliner are occasionally running Class 90s up to Carlisle from Crewe. I'm not sure whether they're being run in after being parked up at Crewe or on driver familiarisation before Carstairs reopens fully.
We also have the Colas class 56s on the Logs.
After a break of a week Colas have resumed a working to Longport, apparently, at the moment, with waste from Carstairs.
Icing on the cake was the arrival of the Great Britain multi-day tour behind Scots Guardsman. Sadly 46115 would fail with a hot box on the tender close to Lockerbie.
Captions are largely copied from Real-time Trains web site. Occasionally I'll expand on initials that are obvious but not those where I'm unsure.
Any observations are my own and not intended to show any authority and may show my misunderstanding.

Great video, Leslie, and some phenomenal shots from "new" angles. The shots of the steamer were QUITE epic from that angle... perfect weather to see the coloring and full scope of the loco and those cars, too. The shot around the 23-24 minute mark was also an even higher standard of shot than your normal perfection. Once again... great work and I appreciate the time and effort to film and edit these for us!

Hello Leslie, I love your videos, as I used to live in Cumbria. Your recent trip to Hincaster Junction took me back to my childhood, as it was where we used to watch the mainline trains for hours, with a lot of memories of steam. As you probably know, Hincaster Junction was where a single track line left the main line and go down to the coast at Arnside, thus linking with the west coast line to Barrow. Lots of fond memories. Keep up the good work, and thank you for hours of entertainment! Richard

Dear Leslie, with Carlisle being one of my favourite British railway stations (with Lancaster and Preston) but coming there only once every couple of months due to living in Germany, at least I can draw some comfort from your great videos! Cheers, Joerg

Are the logs we see being hauled behind the Colas locos destined to be lumber for construction or as pulp wood for the paper manufacturers? Really enjoyed the video Les.

A great video again thanks Leslie from an Aussie. I do have a couple of queries.1 what is in the white containers @36:50 minute..plus 2 I notice that the Avanti trains seem to be both diesel or electric and the electric trains only use 1 pantograph for such a long train is that normal.
@mrbluesky2050
@mrbluesky2050 Жыл бұрын
in the white containers, hoods actually, over nuclear flasks, naughty stuff, Avanti Pendolinos, electric sets, rear panto used for collection, bus bar runs along roof of set to other motor cars, front pan lowered to avoid damage, can be used if rear pan is damaged. Avanti diesel sets are 220 and 221 DMU's often used in pairs when services leave overhead tracks... See les's videos during Carstairs blockade a few weeks back. hope this helps

Thanks ! I think you've already had some answers to your queries!
@roboftherock
@roboftherock Жыл бұрын
I read somewhere the reason for using only the rear pantograph was that if a driver spotted anything in the o/head there would be a few extra seconds to drop the panto to avoid damage. If the forward panto was used then it most likely would suffer. If the reasr panto did get damaged then the forward one was available for use. As I said, I read that somewhere so it should be treated as hearsay. It may be true, but …
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
@@roboftherock interestingly TransPennine and I think LNER use the front one. I think there is a problem of a wave in the overhead wire causing issues on pantographs spread apart.

30:16 Okay, I admit I did not understand what the signal was telling me. Red light - straight forward. Feather to left - I assumed the locomotive would go left. Indicators to the right with letters - not a clue. So I was somewhat surprised when the locomotive trundled off to the right. Can anyone put me out of my misery and explain what I was seeing, please?
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
The two white lights are a shunting signal (think of it a small semaphore arm) in this case into a siding. The SDG means Siding, in this case the High Wapping sidings to the right of the running line where you see the loco move. A feather indicating a junction with line to the left would be much longer and above the main signals.
@thomasm1964
@thomasm1964 Жыл бұрын
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Wow, that was fast! The SDG inicator was new to me but I should have realised that the "feather" was not a real feather but a digital shunting signal. Thanks very much for the quick and clear explanation. Everything now makes perfect sense!
