Passenger Takes Controls After Pilot Incapacitation
Episode 2 of Air Traffic Control Stories
A regular flight took a dramatic turn when the plane suddenly nosedived, disorienting everyone on board. One passenger, Darren Harrison, saw what was happening. The pilot had become incapacitated. Without any flying experience, Harrison climbed into the front seat and took the controls.
At 10 a.m. on May 10, 2022, a Cessna 208 Caravan flying at 12,000 feet from Marsh Harbour Airport in the Bahamas to Florida’s Fort Pierce International Airport contacted Fort Pierce Tower, alerting them to the unfolding emergency. One pilot and two passengers were on board. To the tower’s surprise, it wasn’t the pilot on the radio, but a passenger who had been forced to take the controls. Harrison had struggled for 20 minutes just to get the radio working, and he just wanted to get home to his pregnant wife. This is the conversation between Darren Harrison and air traffic control.
Air traffic control audio licensed from LiveATC.net.
Unnecessary communications and pauses were trimmed for clarity.
The positions of the aircraft may not be 100% accurate. Only involved aircraft are shown. Animations are based on air traffic control communications and data from flight tracking services.

I remember reading the new story on this incident. The passenger had flown on several other flights on aircraft like this one and had spoken with pilots and had learned several of the controls and how to operate the radio some.

My jaw dropped, not when i heard the passenger landed successfully (still, great job) but when I heard what happened to the pilot. I gasped and was 100% expecting the pilot to not make it, let alone be cleared to fly again. Aortic tears and dissections are no joke!!!
@mrkhoros

Most airplanes are very modern these days and can land on their own given the right set of commands to the computer. He was being instructed by a seasoned pilot from the radio too so I don't understand why your jaw dropped.
@ChristopherBurtraw

@@mrkhoros reread what I said... Did you catch what incapacitated the pilot? It's a miracle he survived let alone able to still fly. The fatality rate even with immediate medical attention is not great, and this pilot was almost 2 hours out from getting attention from symptoms onset. The landing is cool but no miracle, so I agree with your point, I think you simply missed mine.

@@giorgiontanas8618 you think Joe Schmoe off the street instinctively knows to say, "November Tripple Zero Bravo Lima" or whatever? No. They say, "MAYDAY. OH 💩! IS THIS ATC? WE'RE IN TROUBLE!" I'm not saying it's a stunt. I'm saying he understated his experience, even if it's just hours and hours of flying in the copilot seat with his buddy, without ever taking a class.

The ATC guy was fantastic and deserves a medal! These men a women save lives with no experience themselves in the tower. Just mind blowing! So glad all where safe and the pilot recovered well.

I took a flying lesson when I was 16 in a Cessna 150. That was in the late 60s. I know how to fly a private plane, but could never afford to get a Pilot License. I know enough if that happened to me today (at 72) to change the radio to 121.5 MHz and declare MAYDAY. I would have no trouble landing the plane anywhere.

Everybody involved did a great job however if you have never dealt with radio lingo for aircraft it is a very real and scary situation especially if you have a situation like this and ATC is talking to you in a language you don’t understand. Several years ago Canadian Transportation and safety board did several experiments with people off the street who had never been at the controls of an aircraft and put them in a flight simulator and they found if the person had basic instruments they could easily follow ATC commands and almost every person landed the aircraft versus a modern cockpit with glass panel instrumentation as almost every person had sensory overload with the amount of instruments, dials and radios they had to look at and in those cases roughly 60% of the people crashed the plane due to not being able to read the instrumentation and losing focus on flying the aircraft. Still kudos are in order for that passenger to keep a level head for the most part.

I'm surprised the atc didn't ask to check the carbon monoxyde patch, if the pilot is unconscious the rest of the plane might become soon also. Also quite lacking reassurance and basic flight instruction (ie. do you know where the throttle is and so on). Anyway glad to know they landed safely

This story is BS and deserved a thumbs down. the "passenger without any flying experience" was actually co-owner of plane or good friend with lots of trips togheter with the pilot. And did had flying experience - but not vertified. Even my sons at the age of 7 and 10 had flying experience, with hours of manual flight and basic throttle/altitude control. Not necessary qualified to land, but far from helpless - just like this "passenger without any flying experience" actually was. This story was blown up like that back then, but there is NO reason to repeat that mistake over 1,5year later. - except sensationalism.
