Here’s another point of view of the switch back turn: instagram.com/p/CEFRZUUptnn/?igshid=nf3bjdng1wbr Sorry, there’s a few mistakes I caught: 8:40 That vehicle is a Ford Expedition, not Ford Explorer. 17:34 I called Laurel Lakes "funnel lake".

I like that you guys are getting all you can out of those cars! Sometimes its fun to push a vehicle to its limits instead of having a rig that makes it easy! Sometimes its helpful to turn your mirrors down to point at the rear tires to watch for placement on rocks!

A guy died on that switchback trying to do a multipoint turn like you instructed those people to do. The reason those switchbacks have landings is that the proper way to approach them is to drive straight onto the landing, then back down to the next landing, and go forward from there. The reason they are built this way is because they were originally built for mining wagons and large mine trucks which couldn't negotiate tight turns, even with multipoint turns. Thats how people are able to tow full trailers up to laurel lakes, and is really the smart way to approach that particular turn to avoid killing anyone. I'm not trying to be critical - just sharing info that may prevent you from getting people stuck or even hurt. Keep up the videos!

JonDZ - I would love to see a video by you comparing all of the “soft-roading” AWD systems with some stock footage. You have real world experience with mostly apples-to-apples comparison between different manufactures on the same trail and the same day. I would love to hear your thoughts on the Passport vs RAV4 Adventure vs Subaru (Outback v Forester v Ascent) vs Jeep (Compass vs Cherokee) etc. The new Ford Bronco Sport will be a serious contender as well. Maybe the best.

I have a few videos like that, but another thing that accounts for a vehicle system’s capability is the driver. After this series I plan to do a video about a “difficult 4x4 trail”, and we got two Subaru’s up. One of them being a 2010 Lifted Legacy Sedan with a CVT. I would never believe anyone I’d they told me, but I saw it with my own eyes. This was perfect proof that gobs of skill can safely overcome a trail well beyond a vehicles limits. This video is a bit of a comparison. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLxlpJhi2qfOcWw.html Also, my “Overlanding: how much capability do you need” video lots of footage attacking the same obstacle.

Enjoyed the video and glad to see that you guys made it to the lake. I did the first mile or so of this trail in a stock VW Tiguan with +1" A/T tires (total ground clearance of 7.5"). You are right about watching your transmission temps. 8k+ elevation and a turbo engine running at low RPMs (minimal boost) doesn't generate the ideal torque to crawl/bump the VW over some of the rocks. It's probably doable in a Tiguan but not recommended. I can't imagine this trail would be good for the Subie's CVT.
@JonDZ_Adventuring

Thanks for watching David! The 3rd gen Forester with the automatic got through this trail with relative ease. She has a Scangauge ii and I helped her program it to view her trans temp. She only got to 217F, but to be safe, she pulled over before a steep climb. I’m very curious how hot the CVTs got, but they weren’t being monitored. Man... I highly recommend everyone monitors their temps.

Every time is visit Laurel Lakes it just gets more and more crowded. People leaving their trash by the lakes and camping right next to the water is really disappointing. It made me laugh when I went this past July - saw tons of tricked out Rubicons, Gladiators, and TRD Pros, which are totally unnecessary to make it. I made it easily in a 1955 Willys 4x4 Utility Wagon - no power brakes, no power steering, no synchro in 1st on the trans, and no lockers. Just skill required.

I wonder what happened with that Ascent? You can see traction control working in reverse when you walk up but then it just doesn't work anymore? I think it still uses the MPT center so I wonder if it some how got overheated in those moments. I'm gonna need to do some research on this! Fun video Jon.

Nice video. I know it’s hard to truly capture the challenge, or the steepness, of a trail on camera, but that hairpin turn looked tough. Especially in an un-lifted vehicle. My hats off to you. I drive a lifted Jeep, on 35’s, that would make that trail less technical, but it’s refreshing to see a group of crossovers, and AWD vehicles pushing the limits. You guys would be fun to Overland with.

Sean Miller thanks! Yes, your Jeep would make easy work on this trail. IMO, Wranglers are on another level. Actually, the only vehicle that didn’t have extra ground clearance was the Toyota 4Runner TRD pro, but 9.5” here, is plenty. My Passport has 11-1/4” at the front skid plate and 11-1/2” at the rear diff. Feel free to join us sometime, there’s been a lot of dedicated off-roaders joining us lately.

JonDZ Adventuring That’s awesome clearance. I’d love to get in on one of your trips. I’m definitely more of an Overlander. I’m not into rock crawling, or hardcore 4Wheeling, but I do enjoy a technical trail. More than anything, I just love getting out into the wilderness. I’m usually alone, but only because I don’t know many “like minded” people that enjoy the sport. I used to Overland with my cousin regularly, but that’s no longer an option, and there are many trails I’m forced to pass up because of the risk of getting stuck by myself without help.

I recently took my '16 OB with A/T tires up in Hollister ( Hector Heights ), which is a blue trail. I made it unscathed and the trail is surprisingly steep and technical. It was definitely pushing the OB to its limit as I saw my engine oil temp reached 246 degrees. Although I made it along with other 4x4 friends, I was uncomfortable to say the least. I dunno, I have a mix feelings whether or not keep my OB or get a capable 4x4 with the correct transmission. Pre-covid my driving would be 90% on paved and 10% to the parks, so it's still hard to justify.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 4 жыл бұрын
Anthony Datu I know exactly how you feel, except at one point, I have owned a FJ cruiser. Before I was offroading, I’d just drive it from Los Angeles 100 miles to Big Bear and 330 miles to Mammoth for snow boarding. I used the 4 high solely for adverse snowy weather. As a highway vehicle, it sucked balls. 14 mpg because it was the TRD “trim” with the giant built in 1.5” tubed roof basket/rack. I bought a Subaru WRX and life was good... well until I discovered camping/overlanding. Then I got into a 2015 FXT for more cargo space and ground clearance. Some may not understand why I won’t go back to body on frame vehicles like the FJ, but like you said, you spend 90% onroad. It actually might be more like 97% to be honest. You know I get our a lot, but my offroad miles account for only a small percentage. So, that’s why I bought the passport. I wanted more capability but I still wanted a good daily driver. Actually, the #1 thing was a car that would be more “reliable” and that’s why I looked at a 2019 Tacoma first. It’s just too small of a vehicle, I really wish they would have made the cabin taller, I’d love to be in one. The 2nd gen Tacoma I can do. I’m not sure why they decided to shrink the Cabin and worsen the ergonomics for the 3rd gen. The Honda dealership was next door and I had already researched how capable the drivetrain was. What sold me was how awesome it performed onroad. It’s so quick (pre 32.1 inch tires), the luxury and comfort was awesome. The big question is how long will the 2nd gen ZF9 last. Will it make it to 400k miles? Man, there’s not many choices out there for a onroad happy dedicated off-roader. I think the JL wranglers are great. The ride is impressive for a solid front and rear axle vehicle. The bronco might turn out good, it’s just too early. But if you’re looking for a used dedicated off-roader pre 2018, everything is just so floaty and out of their element on pavement. If a Tacoma works for you, I’d go with that! Not quite as bad the more aged body on frame Toyota’s.

I like 27:50 car at the edge of the cliff - coordinator : a bit more... :-)) I appreciate it is the camera angle that makes it look more scary than it appears form the side angle where we can see exactly where the cliff begins but still I wouldn't feel comfortable at the driver seat (I suspect this is why some 4x4s have removable doors). At any rate, I wouldn't do this drive with an SUV/4x4. Maybe as a day trip with an ATV for a fews hrs fun by the lake and then back out again before sunset. Tnx for sharing, it is remarkable where these SUVs get to (cost of service/repairs must be getting a hit though cause all components are seriously stressed). Stay safe and healthy !!!

I can honestly tell you, the cliff looks just as scary in person 😱. I saw a lot of SxS driving up and down to the lake. I think they rent them out around that area. As far as my vehicle components, I have 43k miles and haven’t had to replace anything yet besides my tires (they had 35k miles of life). However, I don’t know how long things will last, I’m hoping my axles and shocks will last until 80k, but I’m barely over half way there. I will let you all know when something goes out.

Dallas Ray thanks! I see it all the time. A capable rig doesn’t make up trail experience and skill, and that’s something that you just can’t see at first glance. The Subaru Forester that pulled over has a 4 speed automatic transmission. We were the only two with scangauge2s so who knows how hot the other transmissions got. I highly recommend everyone monitors their temps. My previous vehicle was a Subaru Forester XT with a CVT and it died at 60K miles. After the no charge replacement I got into the Passport. Even though the transmission in the new ride isn’t prone to overheating, it still peaked at 218F on this trail.

Hey there, when did you guys do the trail? I was up there with my wife & kids on the 13th? It was definitely an awesome trail. My trans did start to over heat & threw a code. After cooling down I made the last 1000yrds down to the lake in limp mode...😬😬😬 Had to drive out after the lake with 2nd & 3rd gear only. Pro Env quite honestly, this trail was super easy for me. If you watch the rough section part, you can hardly hear my engine, just the gravel I’m driving on top of. It’s easy to forget how difficult a trail would be for someone with little to no experience. Those are the people we have to look out for. The guy driving the White Ford Expedition is the perfect example. There are so many people out there that don’t have the skill (yet). The saying goes, better safe than sorry.

@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 4 жыл бұрын
Emerzon Feniquito thanks for watching! 🙏 As far as the lift, I’d go with Traxda because they have front camber adjustment. The other brands do not, and I’ve had people messaging me that it’s problematic. So, that’s why I’d go with Traxda. They have the standard 2 inch lift, or if you’re feeling extreme, they have a 3.5 inch lift. Eventually, I’ll go with the 3.5 inch kit. Tire choice will depend on what you plan to do with the Passport. An aggressive tire like Falken Wildpeak AT3W is good for off-road, but the trade off is worse onroad performance. With the trails I’ve been doing lately, I’m glad I have them, but it’s not as pleasant behind the wheel during long road trips. My previous tire was the Cooper Discovery AT3 4S and that was such a great all around performer! Definitely not as grippy as the Falkens though. Toyo Open Country AT3 is a new tire that I’d love to try at some point. So, just ask yourself, what kind of driving are looking to do.

Hey Mr. Ram! Thanks for stopping by, I really appreciate it when you do. So, honestly, I just left the Passport in “Drive” and “Mud mode” the entire time. Even during the “rough section” you probably didn’t hear much revving. It was pretty easy for the passport. At the very end of the video, you’ll see me driving a Ford F-150 up a steep rutted hill. I was driving it for two ladies that were scared to get up that obstacle. In 4low 1st gear, it felt just like the passport. The passport drives more like a 4wd than an Awd, and it’ll it all automatically with “Drive”. The only time I for sure use Sport mode and 1st gear is when I drive downhill. The engine braking really helps.

If you a going to tackle really uneven terrain with cars that were not designed for it, you should be aware of left foot braking (as used for off-roading, not racing). The fellow that got hung up on the switch back could have driven out unassisted using the technique. Left foot braking is used with open differentials to distribute power more evenly to all tires when some are spinning. It involves braking with the left foot as power is applied with the right. The braking stops the spinning tires resulting in some power being redirected to the tires in firm contact with the ground. I have seen many experienced off-roaders use it successfully in exactly the situation presented here.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring Жыл бұрын
I use left foot braking all the time. But I was told that his CVT equipped vehicle cuts the gas when the brake is applied. Not sure if that is totally true, because I saw an Outback with a V6 and CVT use the left foot brake technique.

The lowest hanging points are the lower control arms. In the rear, the lowest point on the arms is 9”. david juarez a 2019 tiguan should do better than the Subaru’s, so I’d say so. Historically, the Haldex AWD system wasnt so good, but Haldex 5.0, like in your Tiguan is now one of the better AWD systems. Also, your ride has a 18.6:1 crawl ratio which rivals a Jeep renegade trailhawks 20.4:1. Other crossovers only have a 12-14:1 crawl ratio. 9.5” of ground clearance is right on the border of having enough ground clearance, so offroad skill (wheel placement) will be very important.

I still think you should just get a 100 series Land Cruiser. Take all of the money of a car payment that you would save and use it for gas money.

This moderate 4WD trail will be hard to severe for an AWD, so completing this trail will be heavily dependent on driver skill and experience.

30 years is a lot of time to build up your skill set. The guy with the white Ford Expedition is a perfect example of what this trail can do to beginners. He was stuck and high centered on a rock for 30 minutes and blocked the trail. Then I captured the part where he smashed into more rocks. It’s my responsibility to assume the viewer is a beginner. Like the saying goes, “better safe than sorry”. There’s also too many cocky drivers out there with capable vehicles that don’t respect this trail and end up destroying their vehicles and leaving car parts and fluids littered across the trail.

We shall see. If they put a real transfer case in the bronco sport it would be promising. It’ll be hard to compete with the Cherokee trailhawk because not only does it have real 4 low, but it also has a real rear locker, and we all know how magical lockers are.
