***I WANT TO START OFF BY SAYING that Laurel Lake has been becoming more and more popular. Every single day, more and more people are getting into overlanding. This is a 3000 ft. climb spread across 5 miles. There is a rough section that goes on for about 1/2 mile, so it's prolonged technical driving. Also, watch out for the rocks! Drivers of dedicated offroad vehicles may get too cocky and pop their tires, don't be that guy/girl.
AWD crossover: see how your vehicle matches up to a Subaru or a 2019+ Rav4. If less capable, I would not recommend this trail for you. A vehicle with an older part time reactive AWD system like a 2018 or older Rav4 may really struggle here.
There's only about 40-45 parking spots (without double parking), so know that if you plan to camp here on the weekend, you might not land a spot by the lake.
I hope you find this information useful! Remember! The Monache Meadows has been getting more and more crowded, so it's a good idea to have a "PLAN B".

I will be making it! It was next inline, but I’m going to have to do a video about the Labor Day weekend trip. It’s time sensitive because of all the fires 🔥. I’d like to include a message about being responsible outdoors. Here in Cali, the outdoors are temporarily closed in many places! And 67% of these fires were man made 😭

That's great. And we need to educate as many people as we can. We're in the same boat up here in Oregon. It's painful to see it all unfold. Stay safe, my friend!

Vibol Bou I saw Instagram posts from friends in Oregon. Looked like night time in the middle of the day. Truly a sad sight. Did you hear that a California wildfire was started by a gender reveal party? They used a pyrotechnic device and “surprise!” that caused the fire 😢. I hope things improve over there! Stay safe as well!

At 47k a bolt “just” coming loose sounds like quite a good record all things considered. Really cool to see you showing the way forward for us Passport owners.

David, I do find it unsettling, but I also understand that the specific bolt has been loosened when my vehicle was worked on. I reconnected it with no issue and I’m really curious about the cause. I’ve been on some rough roads: the race track playa (both ways), 130 mile Mojave road, and more recently the south road to Bodie. The trail where the bolt fell off was especially harsh. It was a 30 degree rocky and loose climb where I had no choice to “send it”. I wonder if it was abuse over time or that one stressful incident. Was the bolt torqued down? I also wonder how much longer my suspension parts are going to last. So far so good! My previous vehicle didn’t fair so well.

Hi, hope you're doing well. Very nice content. I was researching videos on Crowley Lake Columns and ran across your video. I have a stock Forester Wilderness, I feel it will make up that hill. Just wondering what that Subaru in you video completely stock or lifted. I just started going softroading so if you have any advice for getting up that hill leading up into Crowley Lake Column, it is much appreciated. Thanks

If momentum is used while climbing on a subaru outback with CVT (TR-580), it seems as though the chain would "shift" to a bigger diameter pulley and might hinder the vehicle's climbing ability. I'm not sure, it's just an observation on my part.
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 жыл бұрын
Anthony Datu I’m not exactly sure what happened, but that hill was no joke. Never looks bad on Camera, but was enough to scare those ladies with the F150. I’m truly impressed that a CVT was able to continue on mid climb like that. I’m curious if my 2015 FXT with the TR690HT would climb after stopping Midway.

Do you keep your rear sway-bars detached all the time or do you just disconnect them when you get to the trails?
@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 жыл бұрын
I use to only disconnect them when hitting a trail and then reconnect them once I get back onroad, but now I just keep them disconnected full time. They are a safety device, so I’d never recommend anyone drive with them disconnected. I’ve found acceptable levels onroad handling, increased comfort but definitely a reduction in handling performance. Maybe it’s because of the geometry of suspension but emergency braking is just fine. You can see from this video that wheel articulation is increased quite a bit, but still not on the same level as the solid axle vehicles. My guess is that directly correlates to ride handling. I won’t try to do the “moose test” anytime soon or Apex through turns, haha!
@PatrickRich
@PatrickRich 3 жыл бұрын
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Changing the front/rear roll stiffness can be dangerous, but decreasing the rear roll stiffness compared to the front creates more understeer, which is definitely more preferable to oversteer, so at least it's the better of the 2 options. I sometimes leave my front sway disconnected because I'm lazy from time to time. Not a great idea but my truck is so light (relatively) and the shock and springs are meant for load so the roll stiffness doesn't seem to change a ton and I always drive a little more cautious when I know its out.
@JonDZ_Adventuring

@JonDZ_Adventuring
@JonDZ_Adventuring 3 жыл бұрын
I have that answer for you on my instagram account. I let everyone know 16 hours after "the issue". After all the abuse I've put on the Passport, a Bolt came loose, haha! Maybe the Honda factory didn't tighten it all the way, but a good rule of thumb is to check and tighten your bolts every 40k miles, this goes for everyone! Especially the guys that modify their vehicles! I was 7K miles too late! I checked all the other CV joints and they were all tight, it's just this one bolt on my rear passenger upper control arm. Check out the mini episode here: instagram.com/tv/CFAgnJPA3GT/?

I say this as a skier who has been up that way a couple times, not an offroader, but even in low-snow years I'm guessing there's a good chance you'd hit a few impassible snow drifts in May.

Because 95% of driving is done on paved roads, so most people prefer the handling and ride quality given by a unibody vehicle with independent suspension. The cool part about JonDZ's content is that it caters to people who don't want to commit to a truck, but still enjoy exploring trails now and then. Some of the audience will probably go and get a "real" truck if they decide they like 4x4ing enough. Other people will modify their existing crossover to make it more capable on trails. Others still will simply have the peace of mind that they can occasionally take their new car-based SUV out into the countryside without the fear of getting stranded. It's not an obsession so much as it is catering to an audience that isn't served by the majority of off-road content on KZfaq.

William Sharpe I literally could not have typed it out better myself. Very eloquent comment! Onroad comfort, efficiency and performance is why I drive the Passport. Even though I frequently hit dirt, my guess is I probably only have around 1k miles logged off-road. Maybe even less! On This 3 day trip, we drove 10 miles to Laurel lakes, 2 miles through the mammoth scenic loop and 2 miles to the crowley lake columns. But the entire trip was around 800 miles driven. 98% onroad.
