We are in Ephesians. The word for gospel, the euangel words occur 7 times in Ephesians. And it is to Ephesians that we turn for one of the clearest and most succinct statements of Christian salvation. You know the text. "For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is a gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." This is as protestant a summary of salvation that there may be in the New Testament. That at least in such as succinct form. There it is. All the crucial elements: by grace, through faith, gift of God, not of works. And it may be significant that Paul doesn't say to the Ephesians "works of the law'. This is a statement of plain works. It could be a short hand for works of the law. But just as likely, it could mean there are no works that anyone can perform that will win God's saving work...
