Hello my name is Evan and I have been born into the church and have been involved every since and I will shortly be leaving my mission call in Buenos Aires, Argentina. I just first want to say I love the respect you give our religion and the openness to learn even if you may not believe in the same things. And while watching I wanted to give more information about things and I hope I can help. First of all missionary’s are allowed to video call there families on a weekly basis and this is a pretty new thing too. And the age to serve as a male is from 18-26 and is two years long. And for females the can start serving at the age of 19 and will serve for 18 months. Also with me being from the Dallas Texas area we have many wards and branches and it’s not only Utah with many wards. Also recently based on church census we have more church members outside of the United States then in the United States. Also a great movie about the pioneers is call the 17 miracles. And when it comes to things we do not drink you can find what we drink and don’t drink in the word of wisdom which was revelation from Joseph smith and can be found in another book of scripture called the doctrine and covenants. If you need any help on any explanation just ask. Once again thank you for all the respect you give and all the love too.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but there should be some upcoming temple open houses in UT. Open houses are the one time that LDS temples are open to the public for guided tours of the building. This happens before it is dedicated and rarely happens again unless there will be a period of major renovation (like what you're seeing with the SLC temple). I'm not sure exactly when the next one will be, but I know the saratoga springs temple is estimated to be completed late 2022. Usually and open house will start soon after completion.

I totally disagree. The Disrespect this Pastor continues to show is in his reference to Mormonism. That is insulting and we're fed up with it. We are not a BOOK!!!!!!.. Your ignorance to that fact is exactly why the Church is continually called the Mormon Church or Mormon's. It will only change when members like you stop allowing the insulting references.

As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints I just wanted to say thank you for your video. So many times I come across something like this and the message is only meant to mock and belittle our faith and your video was truly respectful, honest and even kind. Thank you, can’t even begin to express my appreciation for your work on this. I served my mission in the Bible Belt and have a deep appreciation for other Christian religions, I have attended evangelical meetings, Catholic Mass, I’ve been to a Baptist tent revival and even attended a Jehovahs Witness meeting at a Kingdom Hall and a worship service with a televangelist in Ohio. My wife has a non denomination bible study here in Utah where neighbors of the LDS faith and evangelical faiths study together every week. I certainly recognize that we have beliefs that are different, some even a little strange to the casual observer but what I’ve learned and truly believe is that those of us with faith have FAR more in common than I think many of us realize. In a world that seems increasingly confused and lost the Christian faith communities and people of all faith for that matter have answers that can bring peace and happiness . Glad I found your video here tonight, I’ve liked and subscribed and look forward to following more of your content moving forward. Thank you!

Even if this is was not the case though, your views on the God head do not make you a Christian or not. Your discipleship and devotion to Christ, is what make you a Christian. @@madogg152 I just converted to LDS two months ago, and a Christian is a person who believes that Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world from the penalty of death. He was, and IS and will always be, the Son of God, the final sacrifice for sin. Anyone who believes that Jesus was crucified, buried, and rose again as the first fruit of eternal life, AND who follows His commands of charity and sacrifice, is a Christian. That's what Christ said, that's what Paul said, and that's what Peter, James and John said. Whereas evangelicals believe that grace alone saves you, and that works are not necessary, (I was an Evangelical), the Bible says, and the LDS believe, that even the demons believe, so belief in grace alone is devoid, and TRUE faith in the grace that saves us, MUST be followed up with works to prove your faith in Christ's grace is real, and not dead. That's scriptural: "Show me your faith without works, and by my works I will show you my faith."

@@themissionwithdanny most SDA’s I have met treat their religion as a cult, sadly. Good people, but that is common in every religion. Many Christians struggle with this. In the LDS community, there are some that treat the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS as a cult too, though it is not meant to be that way. We’re all children of God sent to do great works that glorify Him and as long as we include the Lord in our journey and travels, we won’t be led astray. Making sure that we pray to the Lord in all things and follow Proverbs 3:5-6 and James 1:5-6 then it will all work out.

Nah if you really wanted to unite the world the entire planet who believes in this nonsense would have to put all this ancient primitive superstition behind. All this religious mumbo-jumbo voodoo stick is one of the things that holds us back as a species along with commerce. And more people have died in the name of religion in any other cause out there. We have this incredible brain that we evolved with and all this religious mumbo jumbo is very limiting for this large Brain we have, so we limit ourselves and then we want gadgets and toys and games and dollars and shiny things and there's very little of the core humanity that's left in this species. On a small scale all it is is the worship of invisible non-existent sky fairies and the search for dollars and the things that dollars can buy, on a large scale it's just one big giant human comedy.

Literal quotation of scripture without even knowing it. Alma 30:13-18 13 O ye that are bound down under a foolish and a vain hope, why do ye yoke yourselves with such foolish things? Why do ye look for a Christ? For no man can know of anything which is to come. 14 Behold, these things which ye call prophecies, which ye say are handed down by holy prophets, behold, they are foolish traditions of your fathers. 15 How do ye know of their surety? Behold, ye cannot know of things which ye do not see; therefore ye cannot know that there shall be a Christ. 16 Ye look forward and say that ye see a remission of your sins. But behold, it is the effect of a frenzied mind; and this derangement of your minds comes because of the traditions of your fathers, which lead you away into a belief of things which are not so. 17 And many more such things did he say unto them, telling them that there could be no atonement made for the sins of men, but every man fared in this life according to the management of the creature; therefore every man prospered according to his genius, and that every man conquered according to his strength; and whatsoever a man did was no crime. 18 And thus he did preach unto them, leading away the hearts of many, causing them to lift up their heads in their wickedness, yea, leading away many women, and also men, to commit whoredoms-telling them that when a man was dead, that was the end thereof.

Temple Square at Christmas time is absolutely fabulous. In a couple of years when the SLC Temple is rededicated you will need to get out there to see for yourself and bring the family. Also take time to visit the Family History Center just outside the Square at the west side of the wall and be prepared to spend a couple of hours there. My nonmember cousin went there a few months ago and just ran out of time there. She used to be in the Unification Church and used to work in SLC. I'm not LDS and I brought my family to Utah 16 years ago when I retired from the military. The pros greatly outweigh the cons here. We've seen many people (both LDS and non-LDS) who couldn't adjust to the culture here and left. Our LDS neighbors are great and we try to be considerate of their culture. We live along the Wasatch Front right between SLC and Provo. We have plenty of coffee houses, and liquor can be purchased at state liquor stores. I'm a beer drinker so I just buy my beer at the grocery store. It's a great place to raise kids, as well. Perhaps the biggest drawback here is that so many people are moving here that our infrastructure is very stressed. Schools are overcrowded and traffic is horrible.

For a few weeks after the construction is complete, the public can walk through the temple and see what's inside and learn about the rituals/ordinances performed inside. If you're from the Midwest, the nearest temple that would have an open house next is the Bentonville, Arkansas temple! I would love watching a video about that.

Love your channel, Pastor Jeff. One suggestion that I have is to locate a newly built temple and take a tour during the open house. I don't think they will allow you to film inside, but photos of the rooms will be available. Also if you go to an operating temple and go in, they will have someone visit with you in a waiting room and tell you as much as they can.

Brigham Young first constructed the temple out of limestone. US soldiers came through and Brigham was scared so he had the members cover the limestone foundation in dirt. After the soldiers left, they removed the dirt and the limestone did not remain. Brigham knew they needed to mine granite. During the construction, the prophet felt impressed to leave gaps in some of the stair ways. 40 years later when the elevator was invented, it fit perfectly in those gaps.

I did not grow up in Utah, but I spent a lot of time there over the years and went to college there in my 20s. I was born to LDS parents, and have been a member my self since my baptism. All my life I've lived outside of Utah, namely in Arizona, Colorado, and Idaho. The church culture is present, but to smaller degrees, especially in Colorado. Serving a mission in the South was even more intriguing. There were quite a few members that were from Utah, who left to the South to escape the overwhelming Culture. Its not that they had any ill feeling towards the gospel, they just wanted to be in a place where they could be a part of a community outside of the LDS church, and not have the church be the sole identifier of their person. Utah is beautiful, and there are so many wonderful people and places, but I myself couldn't move there unless it was a neccessity. The Gospel is everything to me and my family, but we are perfectly fine living that gospel outside of Utah.

I grew up in L.A. and in Chandler, and I can verify that the yeah culture is pretty harsh. My wife grew up in Salt Lake and it took her awhile after being with me to notice what I was talking about. I don't hold that culture against the church, just against members who don't realize they are acting the way they do. Sometimes it's exhausting, other times I just smile and wave and show off my tattoos. The audible gasps when they find out I'm a member AND primary teacher is fun.

Pastor Jeff, I have just recently found your podcast and have subscribed to "Hello, Saints". Listening to you as you delve into "all things Mormon", literally fascinates me. You have an amazing level of openness which is so refreshing. I have listened to several of your videos, including your first time in a chapel, and your attendance at General Conference, as well as a few others. Also, I have appreciated your sharing of the Evangelical perspective - and I can tell you are an excellent student of theological understanding, and I would conclude that you are indeed an ordained Protestant minister. Your observations and responses are astute and articulate. AND fair. I was brought up in a humble Protestant family. We attended our church meetings on Sundays and enjoyed our church family in many different settings, including church picnics, youth volleyball games, vacations bible school, etc. I investigated and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when I was 19 and living away from my immediate family and on my own. After listening to this particular video, I was surprised to hear you express something along the lines of "..'another Jesus Christ', or 'not the same Jesus Christ as the Christ worshiped throughout the Christian communities,' (please excuse my paraphrasing). I hope you understand what I am referring to. Pastor Jeff, there is only ONE Jesus Christ, he is the only begotten of our Father in Heaven. There is no other. There is only one. He is the Savior and Redeemer of the world. This is my testimony to you. Pastor Jeff, please keep on asking, seeking, finding, and sharing what you are doing and thinking about through it all. I would so appreciate hearing a little of your personal history - background, family, etc. It helps to connect with you even more.

You should try to visit the St George Temple which was actually the first temple completed in Utah. Renovations are in the homestretch. It will be a while before there will be opportunities for the public to tour the inside. My grandfather was a counselor in the Presidency of that temple. As we walked around the perimeter, he pointed to one of the windows in the top row. He said that the signers of the Declaration of Independence appeared to President Wilford Woodruff asking why temple work had not yet been done for them. Many years had passed since the Saints had arrived in the valleys of Utah. These honorable men had not been baptized by one having authority or received the other ordinances of salvation by proxy. They wanted their temple work done. A day or two later, President Woodruff, who was prophet at that time, was baptized for all of the men who signed that important document.

It’s where our modern-day prophet speaks twice a year to members worldwide via satellite/Internet etc.… It’s also where the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has their program each Sunday morning “music and the spoken word”. This is one thing that separates us from other Christian churches. We actually believe in a modern-day prophet and apostles. We believe that they speak to us in our time and are given revelation directly for us in our day. Oh, and Since moving to Utah from Maryland have lived in Provo, North Salt Lake, West Bountiful, South Jordan, and now Draper; and all of them have coffee shops like Starbucks & Brews and Brews. The LDS practice of calling each individual congregation a "Ward" began in Nauvoo, Illinois. It started as the political designations of Wards and Precincts - everyone who lived within Ward boundaries all attended Church together in the same congregation. When the Saints relocated to Utah they continued this practice. Eventually the congregational boundaries no longer aligned with the political boundaries but by that time it had already become standard practice to refer to each congregation as a WARD. Also - you should take note how the entire city is laid out according to Numbers Chapter 2 The Salt Lake Temple is "ground zero" or the center and all streets North, South, East and West are numbered according to their distance from the Temple.

She had been through a lot. So instead of leaving West she wanted to stay there because she couldn’t bear the thought of leaving them behind. I tend to think that she followed God‘s path for her even though it was different than the rest of the Saints. while the church moved west, the rest of the people who didn’t go west didn’t want to be without the truth they had had revealed to them. So they did what most of the apostate Christian churches did in Christ’s day: Took the pieces that they had and went forward with them without a prophet to interpret them. I do believe that the Lord had a purpose for the reorganized LDS church in preserving many of the artifacts from that time period that were important to the history of the early days of the church. Therefore, Emma did not “leave” The church. The church left her behind and she kept the pieces that were remaining and sought to help and serve those around her. She never took her name off the records of the church. and she was a believer in everything that Joseph Smith taught until the end of life. I have researched this my whole life. And I have a lot more details than what a lot of the anti-Mormon literature tells.

The "Mormon" pioneers did not leave Nauvoo with handcarts. Handcarts began in 1855, and there were only ten groups of them. In 1847, the first exodus from Nauvoo, regular wagons were used.

Hello Pastor McCullough. I have seen a few of your videos so far and have learned a lot from them. I hope you enjoyed your time in Salt Lake City and other Church history sites. I hope to some day see some of the sites in New York. It was great to see the intersection in Palmyra with the four churches! Please come back to Utah in a couple of years when the Temple Sqaure renovations are finished. They will have an open house for the Salt Lake Temple, which will be a very hot ticket. I appreciate that you are taking the time to talk to people, including the missionaries, at the visitor centers and learn more about the Church and our uniqueness, but also our similarites to other Christian churches. I am also glad that you had a collaborative video with the folks at Saints Unscripted, another site that I have just recently began viewing. I will definitely be watching the rest of the videos and look forward to more!

I would consider myself a non-believing Mormon (although I still love the LDS church). I think it's really hard for the LDS church to bring up members that are as orthodox as the previous generations were. A lot of us consider ourselves nuanced Mormons meaning that we see the problems with LDS culture or doctrine and we are a bit looser with the "rules." I appreciate the pioneer heritage AND I love a good cup of coffee. :)

Coffee drinking isn’t so much a sin as it is a breaking of the temple covenant. The purpose of the temple is to act as high priests/priestesses on behalf of those who never had the chance to hear the gospel or except Jesus Christ or the ordinances in this life. So we don’t drink these things because of our desire to be set apart from the world as the Levites and High Priests were to administer the ordinances on behalf of Israel. They had to wear white clothing and had specific commandments given to them that enabled them to be “clean before the Lord”. The same is true for Latter-Day Saint temple patrons today. That said, I don’t say this as a preaching to you, but rather because too many members don’t get this concept. They think it is about sin, but rather it is about following commandments specific to our day. If we love the Lord and others and desire them to receive the gospel, then we do what it takes to be able to enter the temple on behalf of them. It is about love, not works.

@@davidjanbaz7728 these “rules” aren’t about salvation. They are about exaltation. Salvation is free for everyone through Christ. Exaltation is different. It is a gift given as we show the Lord our love by keeping commandments. It is the exalting of one’s character from being a dirty rotten human to becoming more of a Christlike creature. THAT is what exaltation means. Samson had certain rules that he followed for being a Nazarite that he entered into by covenant with the Lord. They were not required by all of Israel, but by those who held that special commission. It was a covenant made out of Love for the Lord for a specific purpose.

@@DannyAGray Sure! I believe in the tenets of the Christian faith, but I have a hard time with classical Mormon doctrine. Joseph Smiths ability to translate (or transcribe) scripture, temple ordinances as a means to salvation, the Book of Mormon as a historical document. Further, the modern day prophets ability to be prophetic, meaning that one will often contradict those that came before them....and deep changes to doctrine throughout the years. I believe in the good of the LDS people though and the community it creates. Again, I am also fully Christian and believe in God the Father, Christ, and revere the Bible as holy scripture. I am still doing the program for my ward each week though lol.

I’ve been a member of the Church since I was 28 years old. I’m from England where tea flows like water. For over 40 years I have not imbibed tea, coffee or alcohol, or tobacco. Committed Latter-day Saints eschew these things and to obtain entrance to the temple observance of the Word of Wisdom is a requirement. All dedicated members of the Church would prefer that these places were not in their communities and that grocery stores did not sell them.

@Avery Bee I’m happy to answer any sincere questions. Believing and knowing are two different things. Believing comes after sincere searching and investigation. When I heard the fantastic story that Joseph Smith saw God and Jesus Christ together I was shaken. As a child raised without religious observance at home, but being taught scriptures at school, having religious assemblies every morning and singing hymns, a love for the Bible and its teachings began to be distilled upon my heart. I believed as a child that God and Christ were two people, distinct and separate like you and I. After I was introduced to members of the church and after much pondering and many prayers the spirit of God descended upon me and I knew that what I was learning was right and true. It’s hard to describe and explain to anyone who has not been through this process of discovery, but the foundation of my testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ was laid. In order to know that something is true, real and accurate, we have to do the work, the research, the learning - but it must be done in the attitude of sincere inquiry. I was being changed from the inside out. That is the only way one can really know the things of God. So once I began a serious study of the Book of Mormon, once I showed God I was willing to be taught things I never had supposed, little by little things were revealed to me by the spirit of God, what is called the Holy Ghost, and after a while these things fell into place. It was like building a jigsaw puzzle. Every now and then as I persisted things fell into place. So yes I believe Christ came to America and I also now know that he came. And yes America is the promised land he referred to and was foreordained at the creation of the world to be the place from which the gospel would be taught to the entire world. And as we see, this is so. I shall have to continue answering your questions at another time as breakfast calls. ♥️Deborah

@Avery Bee I know Russell M Nelson is God’s prophet on earth today. I didn’t understand the need for a prophet in modern times. I believed in Old Testament prophets and the needs of the ancient people in Israel to be lead by them. I now see clearly why they are needed in all societies. Of course in an increasingly secular world they would seem irrelevant, but not to people who believe in God and want to do his will. Being led by God might seem like giving up freedom to many a modern man, a man of the world, but those of us that love God seek daily to know his mind and will, to know what is best for us, to have his guidance. Of course each individual has direct access to God and his divine guidance, but a prophet is needed to guide God’s people as a whole body so that unity can be established and maintained. I know, again by the spirit of God, that he is a prophet, just as I have known that his predecessors were. If you want to understand more concerning Joseph Smith and modern prophets, I highly recommend a talk which you can find on KZfaq titled “Profile of a Prophet” by Hugh B Brown, which talks about his wonderful conversation with a British high court judge in London who wanted to know about Joseph Smith and whether he was a prophet. More later …….

@Avery Bee Hello again. One cannot gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon unless one believes that Joseph Smith saw God and Christ, was directed by them through angelic ministering to find, access, retrieve and translate the gold plates. The Book of Mormon can only be the word of God if the rest is true. I loved the Bible growing up and read it before bed at night often. I loved the stories of prophets and the life and teachings of Jesus and his apostles. These all served as a foundation for my adult faith. What I failed to understand of course was how the church worked, both in ancient times and then during and after the Savior’s ministry. The Book of Mormon helped me understand the Bible better, which in hindsight is kind of ironic because I initially found the Book of Mormon hard to understand. It was so different than any other book I had read, and I was an avid reader. The Holy Bible and the Book of Mormon complement each other and help us see the divine pattern God laid out for us, his children. It is literally his hand reaching down to us to help us navigate mortality with all its problems and trials.

@Avery Bee I have had opposition from my own family for becoming and remaining a member of the Church. I’ve had opposition from friends. I am so thankful for the Word of Wisdom, grateful that my God is concerned that I am healthy. Maybe people who drink and smoke and take in caffeine think it’s strange that I don’t. Nobody has ever said anything even if they think it. Today there are so many health conscious people around, I don’t think it’s a big issue. In England the public house is a big part of the social culture. I never liked it. Members of the Church in England have plenty of amusement. I was grateful that I no longer had to drink to have a good time. I eat a very strict plant based whole food diet to help me stay strong. Doctors are shocked that at 68 I’m not on any medication. Through my research over the past 50 years I’ve learned about the dangers to the body from tea, coffee, alcohol and smoking. God knew how these would contribute to poor health and that they are also addictive. I hope I have responded to your questions. Thanks for asking. Deborah

Next time, be sure to come after Temple Square opens again. Until then, go see the Brigham Young state Park and the Daughter’s of Utah Pioneers Museum. Try during the regular year to explore each of the significant buildings, both in, by and around Temple Square, and what they do at them. It’s all considered a part of Temple Square activities. Get a map….can’t know it all without one. And be sure not to forget the Church History Library, as well as the Family History Library. They are two different things. There’s the Brigham Young Park near the COB where they hold simple small outdoor summer concerts. They go to the Assembly Hall when it rains. Concerts of all kinds are held in the Tabernacle, the Assembly Hall and the Conference Center. You could actually do a number of trips to cover it all in and around the square. Remember that not everything is on the square block where the temple is and where the Church Office Building is. Some are across the street from them. Be sure to go see the current film at the Legacy Theater and eat at one of the four places to eat. Not sure if the Lion House Pantry is always open, but try one of the three places to eat in the JSMB. The museum and two libraries are very fun too, and there is a gift shop at the museum for a souvenir. And you will for sure see the new visitors centers. I suggest coming when the flowers 🌸 are beautiful on the square, or the Christmas lights are up from after Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve, but before Christmas is best. And come to Christmas and Pioneer Day Concerts!! Be sure a Christmas one!! Other community and church concerts are held here too!! Oh my….you absolutely must go to see the Humanitarian Center. They have tours there, and films to show what the church is doing in the world 🌎. Also, you might want to drop in at Deseret Industries Manufacturing and one of the Deseret Industries stores. I suggest going to Welfare Square. There are several things to do there too.

Did you happen to notice the star of Solomon on the assembly hall? (a six pointed star in a circle). Only after dedication are Temples restricted to members. For sometimes a month or more after completion we invite anyone to tour the Temple before dedication. In the next year or so one will be completed in my neighborhood. Where ever we build Temples they tend to raise surrounding property values allot even outside Utah. Did you also note that the Coffee shop also advertised Cocoa (kind of our substitute for coffee). The same place in our scripture that restricts alcohol also restricts Hot Drinks (Coffee and generally non herbal Tea). Section 89 of the D&C (Much more here than just Coffee, Tea, and Alcohol).

@@davidjanbaz7728 The Atonement wasn't complete until Jesus was resurrected and "ascended to his Father". We focus not on the Cross (a few hours on a tree), but more on what he did in the Garden, and his Resurrection. Our spires still point to Heaven where Christ is and where we want to be. Our temples feature the Messenger (angel means messenger) Moroni who brought pure scripture to restore corrupted revelation to pure form after centuries of human error and demonic manipulation. No cross because it represents the torcher of our God where the resurrection represents the triumph of Christ our God. We do have a semi unofficial symbol in the CTR ring (Choose the Right in a Shield) that some of us like me wear. The burden we take up is explained by Alma at the waters of Mormon in the Book of Mosiah of the Book of Mormon. @@davidjanbaz7728the reason why crosses are rare in lds contexts is because latter day saint theology emphasizes the being of the resurrected christ over the instrument that caused His death. You'll find no shortage of depictions of christ's miracles, His ministry on earth, suffering in gethsemane, visitations after the resurrection, or even christ suffering on the cross in latter day saint art, but the cross itself isnt felt to be a sufficient symbol in most cases.

@@davidjanbaz7728 really? Rejecting a symbol that represents something is the same as rejecting the thing it represents? That just doesn't compute for me. If a symbol is believed insufficient to describe something, you can cast off that symbol in favor of a symbol that is more fitting. Furthermore, that would actually increase the attachment to the object being represented, since the other symbol is believed to be more appropriate
