There's been a boom in mega churches with thousands of members over the past two decades, but that massive growth has come with a cost. A survey of pastors shows the demands of the job are creating greater stress, and some pastors are feeling overwhelmed or even burned out. James Brown reports.

NPR once reported that one occupational hazard of being a pastor is weight gain. Because the pastor has to eat some of everything at pot-luck suppers to avoid hurt feelings.

@@dobbysboggart6883 Im not clergy even once. And I can tell you about all we need is church. I was merely thinking about why the media chooses to promote this storyline. I noticed this year the tv/ media is pushing Christ-mas big time. Now showcasing the hardships of pastors. Of which, I agree: they need breaks every now and then.

@@blaby4ever ... The Joseph Smith Translation corrects that. Jesus didn't go looking for trouble. He spent those forty days fasting to be with God, in preparation for His three-year ministry and His atoning sacrifice. It was the Spirit that carried Jesus from place to place. But the devil followed Him around and kept tempting Him.

Any one who doesn't understand that a person who leads a large organization would need a break to take care of himself is an idiot. This pastor is doing the right thing by taking a Sabbatical. More power to him. He was smart enough to admit it and do something about it instead of quietly suffering. There are no happy martyrs.

He never said he was burnt out! This needs to be paid close attention to and I believe it must be mandated to all church leadership. If the congregation can take breaks and go on long vacations and time away, our overseers should feel compelled to do the same. Its a matter of life, and death. As well as physical and mental sobriety.

A pastor who kills himself is no kind of pastor at all. Maybe the size of the congregation was too large and you might need to share and hire extra pastors to share the responsibility.

Just pray harder, or does that not work at all? Nah, they just want to get away to spend all the money you hand over every week. And as for the stress of the job leading to suicide, they were probably just close to getting caught for child molestation and off themselves to avoid the humiliation.

What? How do you get burned out doing the work of the Lord? Maybe your not cut out to do what Christ did all the time. The man took a basket of fish and bread to feed 5000 people. You would think that would be a burnout. Not Christ went on to do more difficult word of the Lord up until he was executed. Spare me on the burnout of a mega church when other small churches would love to have those issues.

Everyone seems to forget, pastor Wesley is human. When Jesus walked the earth, He also took multiple breaks from people (read your Bible if you have one). It's a lesson for everyone no matter your job...everyone needs a break. Do I guess you prefer he just fake like he is handling it well to appease people like you...then what? Suicide is real in this profession. People like you forget Pastor Wesley is HUMAN and has faults and sin like everyone else.

How can you say that???? Ive always wondered how pastors deal with everybody's issues all the time. I do it regularly and have experienced extreme burnout. Only God can carry the burdens of everyone. Can you imagine doing it on an ongoing bases. I can relate to how he feels. The only difference is I don't have a responsibility of a church so I can not answer my phone anytime I choose to. I can run away. He can't in his position. He is overwhelmed and realizes that he needs alone time with God himself.

@@chazayah5985 Depression and anxiety is classified as mental illness these days. Also he didn't say he had a mental illness. He said he was Tired. I understand what demonic possession is. Ive experienced anxiety and depression and let's be clear...it wasn't a freaking demon. It was life. Just like Jesus felt sadness and overwhelmed before his fate of being crucified. I understand some mental illness may be related to that. This was not his conversation. He never said he was hearing voices or seeing things. He said he was tired and becoming burnt out. What we don't discuss in churches is that being human is hard and living life is harder. Having faith is hard and being judged over everything you do sucks. People have created an image of what God like love is, they don't read the bible to see what it actually is. Let's give it a label for him expressing his need to connect with God on a deeper level and get rest. When you get depressed...is it a demon or are you just dealing with some hard things right now.smh
