Pat Burns fired by Maple Leafs

This March, 1996 Global Sportsline segment deals with the dismissal of coach Pat Burns by the Toronto Maple Leafs. GM Cliff Fletcher, interim coach Nick Beverly, and several players are interviewed, followed by comments from Burns himself.
After that, a several minute retrospective of Burns's time in Toronto is presented. It's kind of amazing that he was let go because of two poor months. The Leafs had started out the 95-96 campaign quite well and were still clinging to a playoff spot when Burns was fired, despite only 3 wins in their previous 22 games. For those interested, the music looped behind the look-back is "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

Pat Burns (RIP) ended up getting the last laugh when he won the Stanley Cup with the NJ Devils. What a shame that he perished so young due to cancer and didn't live to see his induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

I remember that slump in 95-96. Pat Burns should had never been fired at the time. The following year they got worse.

The players didn't want burns to be fired. They got old overnight and Burns' tough nature was exhausting the team. They were too old to be pushed that hard and were limited offensively. It was a shame...

TOR had a decent first half but their 3-17-4 slump that year was one of the franchise's worst stretches outside the dismal 80s (where they had 3 or 4 stretches worse if you can believe it). Burns wasn't gettin through anymore but was a helluva lot better than Nick Beverley or Mike Murphy. Plus Fletcher provided very little in the way of quality youth, which with a mixture of vets Burns had managed to do well with on the 88-92 Habs. He was a victim of a satisfied, aging team Fletcher constructed.

@leafsblake Even Pat Burns(R.I.P.) revitalizing that franchise couldn't save his coaching job with the Leafs,mostly because expectations got sky high after back-to-back Final 4 appearances and they couldn't live up to them.

Montréal didn't fired Pat Burns, he resigned after the team lost for the 3rd straight year in the 2nd round against Boston. The next year, Montréal would hire Jacques Demers and win the Stanley Cup.
