In the second Super Bowl with the Patriots, Vinatieri missed two field goals. He made the last one at the end though, so that is what is talked about. It goes both ways, you can have a terrible day kicking but make it at the end and you're a hero. Or you can have a fantastic day kicking and miss it at the end, and all of a sudden you're trash and don't deserve your job. People jump to either extreme based on circumstance.

During the 1998 season, Gary Anderson of the Vikings made EVERY field goal attempt. In the NFC championship game for that season, he missed ONE field goal against Atlanta. His teammates were calling him all kinds of "m-----f----r!!" On the flip side, Morten Andersen made the winning field foal for Atlanta. He could've had a terrible season (he didn't; at worst he was the second-best [to Anderson] kicker that season), but Andersen still would be a Falcons all-time hero because of that one kick.

The “that’s your job” crowd is weird. You never hear them say that about other players. Every qb should have 100% completion percentage because their job is to throw the football accurately. This is why, as a Ravens fan, I thank Justin Tucker for every make. I catch myself calling him "automatic" because he's so damn good, but for a long stretch Announcers would just be like "Here comes Tucker, the most accurate never miss kicker of all time ever to never miss a kick" and I'm like wow they're setting him up to be killed if he misses this kick. Like when he missed his first EVER extra point against the Saints they had the iso cam on him for the reaction and to crush him for missing his FIRST EVER extra point. It's ridiculous how kickers will get cut for missing a would-be game-winner and people say outright they aren't football players, but like checking the all-time Scoring list it's all kickers and like 4 running backs in the top 50. Kickers and Punters are ther to bail out the "real football players" when they can't do their jobs and they deserve way more respect than they're afforded.

I am not a fan of the Ravens, far from it, but Justin Tucker is one of my favorite most respected players in the NFL. I remember watching one game against Detroit where Baltimore won despite being kept out of the endzone the entire game, because Tucker kicked 5 field goals, and I believe at least two of those were 50 plus attempts. He won that game himself basically.

I agree. Also kickers should sometimes have their number retired. Let me bring one up. Mason Crosby's #2. He is the leading all time scorer for the Packers. He has scored 1,537 points. By comparison Ryan Longwell, the number 2 all time scorer for the Packers has 1,054. That's nearly 500 more for Crosby than the next closest player. I also don't remember him missing any playoff winning kick.

Tom Tupa was not only a good punter but he was a pretty good quarterback too. In 1999 Testaverde got injured and Tupa was the designated #2 QB(So that Parcells could use an extra man on Special Teams) meaning if they put in the actual backup who was designated #3, then Tupa would have to be pulled from the game even from Punting. So Tupa came in the game and immediately threw a great TD. He went 6-of-11 for 165 yards and two touchdowns almost winning the game against the Patriots.

I was a kicker and a linebacker in high school. I could nail kicks from 35 yards or lower easily, but going into that 45-50 yard range was a nightmare. Funny enough, the team rarely gets on you for missing tackles that may lead to points, but if you miss a kick, everyone blames you. It's ridiculous. If the offense scored in their possessions or at least had long drives down the field, we wouldn't have to be kicking from half the field.

I think it relates most closely to putting, golf is a good comparison but more specifically putting. Short putts and kicks you expect to make but any pressure added makes it that much more difficult. Long putts and kicks are very difficult to make and rely more on luck than the ability to actually make them. I would like to see the NFL put together a make rate percentage yard by yard similar to how the PGA tour has make percentage from every foot on a green. Both sports are played where you have different scenarios, conditions and wind in football and in golf there's different scenarios, slopes, and conditions too so I think there could be a cool comparison, for example, a 5-foot putt has the same make rate as a 30-yard field goal, for example, something like that.

As I semi pro punter, I spend countless hours perfecting my craft. Although I’m only 20, I agree the kicking is completely a mental game.

I mostly agree with you but I feel like they can make themselves up. This weekend the Nebraska kicker missed a FG in (I think) the third. But he also made a walk off FG to win the Huskers the game so now he's redeemed

You should see the browns rookie kicker from Scotland. He used to be a rugby player and he's a real athlete. I think he could probably play like safety if he had to. Look up his preseason plays from this year, cuz he made some pretty brutal tackles on some kick returns!

Same thing as being a longsnapper. Everyone thinks they can hut the ball for 11-15 yards (depending on age) then block then join the punt team. Not to mention some long snapper can control the speed of the ball spinning to land it with laces up. Takes a lot more effort and talent then people think. And still madden puts long snappers as left tackles...

I can respect a kicker who will miss and then be willing to tackle a returner vs. someone like Seabass who (with the Seahawks) stepped away from contact and let runners through and wouldn’t tackle anybody. Obviously I want the PAT or the FG but If a kicker can make up for a miss by putting his body on the line, that (for me) shows and says a lot about the man himself. That’s what makes a kicker a football player.

Snaps and Holds are a huge part of whether the FG goes in or not. Gould missed a few this year due too an inexperienced long snapper and rookie holder

As an offensive lineman I can kinda relate to kickers. You are expected to do your job without failure, and as soon as you mess up, you’re the worst player in the history of the sport. Most positions are rated by how much they succeed, but kickers and o-lineman are rated on how little they mess up.

Last i checked points win games as does field position which kickers and punters both affect immensely. Nfl point leaders are kickers.

The field goal is essential to the sport. Without the field goal in play, football would be a lot less interesting because there would be less scoring every time. Not to mention it makes a touchdown that much more meaningful because not only is a touchdown worth two field goals, but you just get so much more strategic depth in the game all-around when you have two completely different ways to score.
