I remember being a teenager back in 1993 or so, sitting in my dad’s Toyota Corolla and hearing this song for the first time. I asked him who it was because it completely captured me and I had never heard anything like it. I was knee deep into Metallica, Tool, and the early grunge movement at the time, but this song really spoke to me. I asked my dad to make a copy of the Secret Story album for me, and I used to listen to it all the time. Later I would purchase a copy of my own and get into Pat Metheny and his various projects. My dad didn’t always keep up with new releases, so it got to a point where I was sharing new Metheny material to him. It was just one of several bonding moments we had over the years. I lost my dad to a long and brave battle with cancer a few days ago. I almost immediately thought of this song, and I was afraid it would be painful to listen to. It isn’t. It’s a wonderful reminder of the relationship I had with my dad. I am left with no regrets, just blessed with beautiful memories.

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful story. My dad and I didn’t share much but we both shared the love of good music. The day of his Funeral the first song I heard coming out of the service and getting in the car was a Pat Metheny song (Last Train Home).

One of the most monumental and accomplished piece of music ever composed by Pat Metheny. A true masterpiece. I have been a fan since the mid 80s and can't get tired of his amazing music, not to mention Lyle Mays.

When I first heard this song I cried for no reason. It was touching a point in my soul where no one had ever dared to do. I think Pat Metheny has a divine splinter in his heart. Only those who own it can speak to music in this way. I can only be infinitely grateful to this song, the only one that can express what my soul feels. For many years I have decided that this song will become the theme song of my departure. On the day of my funeral, I want it to be played throughout the church. I think it's the best way to make all my friends and acquaintances understand what was the meaning of my true essence. Every time I listen to it I relive my life completely: my wife, my loves, my father's death, my truest friends, pain, suffering and music. This song is absolute for me and for my soul. Thanks Pat.

I herd this song on SiriusXM Real Jazz station yesterday...I was blown away...thought Pat had released a new album...I'm an avid Pat Metheny appreciator...so I immediately looked this up and found out this is a release from 1992..I was dumbfounded but then I remembered 29 years ago I was n the process of returning to normalcy from what I call my lost decade...the 80s... The beauty of Pat and so many others music is that it remains fresh..like it's n a time capsule and each time it's released it is new and exciting...I once attended a Pat performance @ the Beacon n NY and his music is so full of energy I couldn't sit still and had to get up and stand off to the side as to not disturb the other patrons... Luv Pat Metheny's works of art...

I had moved to New York City as an aspiring musician (and a huge Pat Metheny fan) in the early 90's, just a few months before this record came out. Over the next 3 years, my band would experience some great highs and ultimately ended up falling apart. In that time, I met two great loves, neither of which would commit to a longer relationship. When I moved out of my apartment for the final time, and took a taxi to LaGuardia for my flight out, this CD (and specifically this song) was playing as I crossed under the moving shadows of beams on the Manhattan bridge. I will never forget that moment.

Well, coincidentally, I just celebrated my 12th anniversary to a wonderful (and different) woman yesterday. BUT - in another cool Metheny story - about 10 years ago, I took my wife to New York City, and we ended up walking around the upper west side, and had lunch at a place across the street from the Beacon Theater. As you may know, Metheny finished a lot of his tours with a multi-day engagement at the Beacon. So I said to my wife, "Hey let's just cross the street and look at the Beacon schedule, maybe we can see Metheny." Nope. Nothing on the event schedule. So we turn around and start walking South. Not 15 seconds later, Pat Metheny comes around the corner and walks past us, holding the hand of a small boy (his son?) Too surprised to say anything, I stop, look at my wife, and say "THAT. Was Pat Metheny."

This symphony pulls such deep emotions from me. I don't believe it's possible to listen to this and not be deeply moved. I saw Pat for the first time in the very early 90s. He came to Seattle and a friend invited me to Pat's concert. PMG was very new to me and I'd only heard a few of their tunes. The theater was large, historic, and perfect for musical performances. When Pat came on stage, there were no introductions, just music right away. Oh! how it gently and mercilessly touched my soul. I cried and cried. It was so moving and emotional. I've been a fan of Pat's ever since.

Was lucky to see Pat Metheny perform this live in Baltimore, MD. Was a warm summer evening along the water at an outdoor amphitheater. This song was the highlight of the night. At approximately the 4:30 mark when the snare drum kicks in. The stage is almost entirely dark with a white spotlight in time with his playing. When Pat launches into to his solo, the euphoric energy felt is something that will never leave me.

For me his ability to allow the various instruments to have a conversation with each other allows ones mind to wonder and to create our own interpretations of his music and the story it depicts in our minds. Pat is a musical ambassador of the Universe! God gave him such an incredible gift of Virtuoso, Composer, Creator, Preacher and Communicator of how our world has been, what its going through and where we will probably go. Just like David Thorpe said in his comments and I repeat: I cannot explain how my heart feels every time I hear a Pat Metheny masterpiece (which is basically all of his songs). But I do know this, it is divine, inspired, it cleans my spirit and I know that it is unfortunate that not everyone appreciates his music, but to the ones who do and understand Pat's message, be privileged to hear what our lives are all about through his music. Dig deep and understand his message, it is bigger than big! It is beyond all of us. Since no one wants to read the Bible anymore, at least you can start somewhere with Pat's music. Remember, God created Pat and gave him this ability that no one else has. I tip my hat off to one of the most incredible musicians that has ever lived!

A very dear friend of mine, who is no longer with us, introduced me to Pat Metheny back in my 20's, and I scoffed at his music for being too mellow. Today, in my 50's, I find it is all I listen to anymore, and think of my old friend each time I hear Pat's music.

I have been a fan of Pat Metheny's music for years. This is music that is truly written from the heart, and has a soul that is all it own, that transports the listener to a place of peace and tranquility. I had just come across this particular piece a few days ago, and like everything else from Pat Metheny that I have heard, this song delivers as only Pat Metheny and his band can! :) Well done!

I'm so glad and was blessed to be a fan of the Pat Metheny Group. I discovered the group in the 80s. I saw them several times and enjoyed every show immensely. Lyle and Pat were a dynamic musical writing team. RIP Lyle. The bandmates were all master musicians. So I keep Mark Ledford's name alive. In the band, he played trumpet, sang, and guitar. RIP Mark. RIP Mark Ledford

You know that is tough, but perhaps: "Every Summer Night," To the End of the World," "Letter from Home," "So It May Secretly Begin," and "End of the Game." And that whole "Falcon and the Snowman" project, as a bonus, as I somehow didn't discover that until 5 years ago. How about from your perspective?

Eric, thank you for your response, because I know how hard it is to name Top 5 of almost anything, especially when it comes to arts. I've loved Pat's work for a long time, but I'd call myself just an ordinary listener with a very limited knowledge of his discography. I mention all that to say that I don't have my Pat's Top 5. By asking about yours, I was hoping to use it as a springboard to discover more of his music. And that's exactly what I'm going to do. So, thanks again.

When I listen to this song, I think of its title. The sad keyboard, the restless strings, all create a feeling of longing. Then, with the assurance of a single drumbeat, the Truth steps in. The Truth Will Always Be. Absolute perfection.
