I wanted to share a great Pat Metheny story. I took my wife and two young kids to see Pat perform at the Blue Note in NYC years ago. It was first come, first serve seating and we waited at the front of the line and got to sit right in front of him. At the end of the concert, Pat looked at my two kids and said over the mic, "You two have great parents," and then he gave each of my kids a guitar pick from the concert. On the way out, all of the other adults were patting us on the back in good fun saying, "Wow, to have your parenting skills vindicated by Pat Metheny!" I draw the, "Well, Pat Metheny says I'm a good parent" card every time somebody says something even remotely negative about my parenting skills. In all seriousness, my wife and I have seen Pat many times over the years and have brought our kids a few times. We sat behind his wife and kids at one concert. I love how the greats really want young kids exposed to their music. Just another reason why he is hands down my favorite musician. Pat, if you are listening, thanks for that evening. My family will never forget it.

But, I can explain it : these are tears of joy because I realize I'm not the only one, we are many, to cry without being able to explain why listening to that wonderful piece. This is the ultimate proof we are human beings, with a heart, a soul, and feeling the same emotion, regardless of anywhere we are on the planet. When it comes to writing haunting ballads, nobody does it better than Pat Metheny. This sounds absolutely beautiful and I am really loving the cinematic feel to this piece, it sounds new and fresh but still has every bit of the iconic signature sound that we have all come to know. All I can say is the legend has returned and he's better than ever.

I used to listen to Pat Metheny in my truck while plowing snow in a very large parking lot up here in Michigan...and always when no one was around usually just before dawn. A fantastic soundtrack for my life from 1978 till now...started with As Falls Wichita So Falls Wichita Falls to Offramp and on down the line. 6 beers, a couple of doobies and a great sound system...all the ingredients, in my book, for a nice evening and a nice sunrise in the snow. Fantastic Mr. Metheny and company, fantastic.

Just listened to this the other day for the first time. Always loved Metheny. What makes this unusual is that everything revolves around 3's. The meter is 6 (2 sets of 3 beats). And the phrasing is 9 bars, which is highly unconventional, but is in fact 3 sets of 3 bars of 6 beats. I believe (although I'm just fleshing this out now, and this could be inaccurate) the chords which are basically one change per bar (3 beats) are as follows: C / / DbMaj7 / / EbMaj7 / / Bb7#11 / / Bbm9 / / Eb13 / / GbMaj7 / / Fm9 / / Ab13 / / - And this repeats as far as I can tell through the whole song

Gary Burton in the liner notes said of Pat: "I had to admit he played pretty well: an incredible blend of Missouri, hip, chops and all those teeth." I saw and heard Pat play this Saturday night in Sydney. Not much and at the same time everything has changed...thanks for the journey Pat!

Now this is incredible music. Just pure and raw and between metheny and sanchez its unparalleled. There is patience and care built into this song, its not some overeager technician trying to show off his chops, its two seasoned legends making something beautiful, i mean this is some of the most original music ever. This chord progression is making some daring changes, while always keeing that repeating note throughout the entire aong without it becoming annoying. This is rocket science disguised as beauty

Pat shines in any setting including solo and small ensembles. But, somehow, I feel many of his compositions shine brightest with large groups of musicians. This is one of his compositions that requires Cecil B. DeMille - like production. Fresh and familiar all at once. Oh, and it's great to hear Luis Conte add his touch along with Antonio. Thank you, Pat, for helping me come to know my better self through your example and your music! You may not realize this, but when I heard this song, I could only think of one thing. For whatever reason, (and I don't understand it either), because when Moses asked God what His name was, He said "I am." It's hard to explain, but the closest example I can give to this is that the Holy Spirit inspired this. When the iconographers of the Orthodox Christian Church create these amazing "windows into Heaven", they have to follow very specific rules in order to ensure that they don't put their own perspectives into them. All they know is that they're blessed to be able to create these Holy icons. If you gaze into anyone of them, you'll see that there's no personal interpretation involved in their development. This is important, because the Church has always used them to teach and inspire everyone who gazes into them. We worship God, and we venerate the Saints and events depicted in them, because they were and are given to us through the inspiration and teaching of the Holy Spirit. We know this, because the "icon not made by hands", as it is called, appeared on a cloth that St. Veronica used to wipe our Lord's face and head after He passed out for the second time on His way to Golgotha. This icon is still at St. Katherine's Monastery on Mt. Sinai, and it is still preserved in its original condition to this day. St. Veronica only discovered this when she took the cloth out of her dress pocket and discovered His Holy Image on it. The Church realized this, and St. Luke became the first iconographer. He depicted our Lord's resurrection and the icon of Holy Pentecost. He was also inspired to create the icon of Mary, the Mother of God or Directress, because she is the direct link to Christ who became as a result of the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit as we read in Luke, chapter 2. It's what we call a Holy Mystery, and we honor her as the greatest Saint of all. She is our Mother, too. It may be a mystery as to how you don't come up with anything such as some sort of setting or how you find it hard to come up with some sort of image or experience that inspires you to create your music. Perhaps it's because God is using your ability to improvise your music the way you do. Perhaps He wants to allow you to make such amazing music in such a way that if you tried to create any music with any preconceived notions or ideas, they might get in the way of what you're trying to accomplish. It's taken me a wile to write all this down, because I had to pray for the words to come to me, and it's a strong conviction; I realize that. I hope that it helps you make sense of the why you do what you do, because I've been learning so much about improvisation. I have to set aside anything and everything in order for the music to flow through me, and since I got this conviction, I find it much easier to let the music develop. After I clear my head and stop "trying" to create it, I realize that the creator of music, "The Chief Musician", (God), allows His grace to fall upon us and inspire us. Do you have to put away all thoughts, and set aside all your cares in order to let the music happen? I have so much I want to tell you in person, and I've been trying to meet you since 1982. Perhaps I needed to experience what I have to learn how to appreciate just how powerful and amazing music is. At a time when so many people aren't willing to experience it for what it is, because what's coming out of the so-called entertainment industry is hardly music in my humble opinion, I'm hoping we're going to hear a shift back in the right direction, because God knows we need more uplifting and positive music these days. It's so amazing that I've been so blessed to hear your music over the years, and it just keeps getting better. I'm so glad I got to attend your second concert at the Variety Play House on Saturday, Feb. 12. I've tried for so long to get a front row seat, and I thought I had until I got there and noticed it wasn't one. You made that evening so memorable, especially when you played that solo collection of songs at the end, and I got to get closer to you thanks to Larry, the head of security. I've wanted to sing "First Circle" with you for so many years, especially after that evening in 1983 when you played at Cafe 290. I was the one who guessed that it was in 18-8. I can't help but wonder if anyone ever got it correct? You really gave me a huge boost of confidence, even though I was being threatened by my father's mother and him with being disowned if I decided to become a professional singer. Now, I'm pursuing that dream, and it's all because of your inspiration. I know I need to do what I've loved doing all my entire life, and my family finally realizes this. My mother always wanted me to pursue this dream, but she was too afraid to openly show my dad and others just how much it means to me. Now, they all know, and I'm glad they're alive to finally see what it means to me. I had to find the courage to face them and tell and show them despite going through years of illness and extreme pain, not to mention two brain surgeries. That's just the tip of the iceberg of my experience, but I'm glad to say that I've forgiven them completely. That's why I said your music has helped me find my better self. For years, I was lead to believe that we human beings were the worst of creation. I couldn't trust anyone, and I believed that we were nothing more than a pile of crap. I wanted to believe otherwise, but my childhood experiences were so totally mixed up that I nearly became convinced even after I heard your interview with Russ Davis in 1982. I was attacked in midtown Atlanta in the spring of 1983. It's even more amazing that the song "The End of the Game" could be the accompaniment of what took place that morning while on a dropoff lesson during my mobility training. Then, I heard it that day, and it quickly set the tone of that whole experience from beginning to end when my mobility instructor, Dave Mueller, caught up with me and my attacker and put him in a Half Nelson until the police arrived. Thank God he had a mobile phone! So how does one come up with music that just seems to be the soundtrack of so many peoples' lives? What I said above is the only answer I could find, or it became clear to me. Please forgive me for such a long comment, but I simply had to put it somewhere, and it only seems fitting that I should put it here! I just hope that if you read this that it's an acceptable answer to the question of how. I've been listening to so many of your interviews, and I can't keep this to myself any longer. We're all just so blessed to be able to listen to your music. I wish I could afford to come to Red Bank, N. J. to see you in September, because I don't know if I can wait for you to come back to Atlanta. Oh, and thank you for your mask! Mine kept collapsing, and I found myself feeling really woozy at one point. I had to leave the show for a few minutes, and when I opened it and put it on, I finally realized why I felt the way I did. Even Larry noticed I wasn't doing that well, so he took me aside after I got out of the "necessary room" to let me know there were some masks at the merch counter. It not only smelled so clean and new, I could breathe so much better! I'd buy two more of them if I could in case we have to use them later, but I had to watch my money. Instead, I bought a copy of "From This Place". Again, thank you so much for all you do, because you love what you do, and you've taught so many people about the importance of doing what we love to do, because it matters. I owe you a huge debt of gratitude. With kindest regards, Anna PS: That's my Artist and Baptismal name, and I'm on CdBaby with an ep I made in 2007 called "Christos Anesti" which is Greek for Christ is Risen. Thanks to Monica Matthews for her help making it. I couldn't have done it without her and, indeed, the Great "I Am".

many of his music could be described like that IMO. "letter from home" is more of a "remembering and old love, and/or deceased family members while watching their photos on a sunday sunset, alone in a house that used to be full of life" or something

While in an OCEAN of excellent Metheny releases, this is but another drop of water, I really look forward to it's release. Pat's records are a soul-balm, and so far this record promises to be killer.

Pat, God has blessed you, and you bless us. Thank you so much for this amazing music... you have been a mentor I've never met, a bright and joyful spot in my life for over 40 years. I could not have done justice to music without the inspiration and power you have given me by standing on your shoulders in my own clumsy way. Thank you again & again, Maestro. You will live forever! - Keith

Pat Metheny to me is the gift that keeps on giving. This is one of the most beautiful pieces he has ever created. I am having trouble finding words to describe it except it is a natural high that i have had yet to experience. I am so thankful to you Pat.

As I sat front row at a recent Pat Metheny concert, he played for 3 hours. He truly loves what he does. His music is timeless. A boy from Missouri, Same River, is beautiful. Wonder if he's single?
