Commercial hunting of bison in the 1870s was big business. With a collection filled with authentic American 19th century arms, it's no surprise that these two Sharps "buffalo guns" were both shipped to Montana during that well-known era. These two Model 1874 rifles each have a fantastic history all their own.

The Sharps has to be one my all-time favorite guns of the Old West. I read a quote in a book at some point that the Sharps is the rifle that made the West safe for the Winchester to win it. It's such a simple, yet elegant and sophisticated gun it's beautiful. I especially love the thick bull barrels, thin front handguard, and double set triggers. I especially like the tang mounted Vernier style sights but the ladder rear sight these two sport must have been more than sufficient for their intended purpose. Awesome pieces of history and art, no doubt.

All beautiful guns and well cared for by the owners. I love the 45 Colt, 45-70 and the 45-120, I have them in my small humble collection. Caring for them... It erks me to no end to see someone with no experience mishandle and damage a rifle. Every time you drop the breach with out moving the hammer to 1/2 cock, you running the firing pin against the breach.

The 1874 was truly a buffalo gun only if it's weight was 14 to 16 lbs. Some hunters wanted even heavier one.

I don't think that's wear from even the most calloused fingers. Someone may have rested it on something while shooting or transporting it. For instance cavalry long guns will show wear in places where they were slung as they rode.

I would agree. Maybe shooting sticks and many years of buffalo hunting.

The one on the right is a "Hartford" model hence the Hartford collar on the breech end of the barrel. Wish he had elaborated on the bore condition of both guns.

I don’t even want to shoot all these guns. I just want to hold them and learn how they work.

Do you shoot one ,do you own one, do you shoot one every month ? ?? many of us do funny how that is trigger time, load development, and actual range familiarity , thanks for showing them.

I just sold two of my Sharps rifles that I had owned for 50 years. I decided to allow someone else to enjoy them, hopefully as much as I did. I sold a business rifle in 45/70 and a carbine in 50/70 both antique original guns. Great old guns, history on parade!

No way you can wear out a wood stock by holding it! This was more a mark left behind by a kind of rest . Maybe an accidential drop.Again no way your hand can wear out a stock that way.

Cross Sticks that were used extensibility while shooting Buffalo is what scarred that wood on the for-end of the first Sharps on the right hand side of the screen, notice the second sharps had no scars on the forearm wood. It might have shot a Buff or two but, it wasn't used by a buffalo hunter. Most buffalo were exterminated by the time this gun was ordered and shipped in 1879! That's why the 1886 Winchester, with its large calibers, never saw much action as a buffalo rifle.

Hhmmm.... I believe that forearm wear was from riding countless thousands miles over the pommel of a saddle, or bouncing around in the ole buckboard wagon!! Sad fact that after many of these old weapons were considered obsolete they were subjected to all kinds of unthinkable abuse by the younger generations....... who are now incidentally old and dead now🤔🤣🤣🤣
