Pat's vs. Geno's! Which Tourist Trap Philly Cheesesteak is Better?

Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks are the two most famous restaurants in Philadelphia bar none. Pat's vs. Geno's is a debate that has raged for decades now and everyone has an opinion on which they prefer. There's one thing to keep in mind though: By everyone I don't mean most Philly locals. Pat's and Geno's are mostly tourist attractions and local Philadelphians don't really eat there, unless they are entertaining out-of-towners. They are far from the best cheesesteak in Philly even if they both have the claim to being the first cheesesteak in Philly.
Still, Pat's and Geno's are such an iconic Philly rivalry, and such a well-known rivalry from foodies in general, I do think it is worth checking them out at least once in your life. Tourist destinations are tourist attractions for a reason: Because they're fun! I think it's still fun to check these two spots out, even if you know they won't be the best Philly cheesesteaks you'll ever have. Besides the historical significance of the two restaurants, Sometimes, what's most important is that you have a good time!
Is Pat's King of Steaks a tourist trap? Is Geno's Steaks a tourist trap? The answer to both questions are indubitably yes. But still, let's see if Pat's is better than Geno's or if Geno's is better than Pat's just for the fun of it!

They dont suck at all... They are good cheesesteaks... They use good meat, good Amoroso rolls. They are just quality and a bit above average. They are overpriced tho. BUT, the one thing I like about Pats and Geno's is their consistency, and their rolls are always fresh, no matter what time you go. I get it though, they have become a tourist trap, and they are ovepriced, so if you want to factor that in to donwgrade them, fine, but to say they "suck" is a bit absurd. And I have lived in South Philly for 38 years.

The best Philly Cheesesteak in Philadelphia is a toss up between John of Roast Pork, Tony Luke's and D'Alessandros. D'Alesssandros finely dices the steak. The best bread on a Philly Cheesesteak is Tony Luke's. John of Roast Pork uses provolone instead of cheese wiz and surprisingly it tastes better. It's your personal choice but these are the 3 places with the highest ratings for Philly cheesesteak

I wonder if social media is the only thing keeping places like this alive. Back in the day, historic restaurants that were once good but eventually the food started sucking and/or getting too expensive would just go out of business and would only live on as memories. Every time someone I know takes their first trip to Philly, they visit these places and post pictures on social media. It's almost "proof" they did indeed go to Philly.

This is a fair review. People act like these places are trash. They are the foundation everything else was built on. They are the standards. You can get higher quality meat, artisan bread, unique toppings and cheese but these two are the Adam and Eve of cheese steaks. Things evolve over time but I'm glad these two have stayed around. It's culinary time travel

I’ll get a chance to go and try it again and see if it’s still good because what you just shown neither one of them look too good back in the day look way better than that and pats didn’t used to chop theirs. They used to make it like Gino’s got it and it was delicious and tender, and that was the first time I had cheese whiz, but I wouldn’t eat cheese whiz now we’ll see. Thanks again. It's crazy to see them charging $14-15 for a subpar cheesesteak. I was at Dalessandros last year and paid $13 for a cheesesteak that was 5x better than the cheese steaks I had at Pats and Genos. Pats' cheese whiz was so watery it was disgusting. Woodrow's is good, especially with the cherry pepper mayo but quite small compared to other cheesesteaks.

The way Geno's uses full slices of steak looks like it traps the cheese at the bottom of the roll. So if you bite the top, you get a dry bite with just steak. Sort of like a Chipotle burrito when one half is all rice and the other half is good stuff.

Both are honestly terrible, but Pat's is less terrible. disclaimer: I'm not a PA resident and I strongly believe cheesesteaks should be American cheese. (all other alterations are fine, just no wiz or overpowering provolone!) Pat's - 4/10 Geno's - 2/10 Need to make another trip to Philly as I feel like I barely scratched the surface of the Cheesesteak game.

Mild prov isn't overpowering, that's what everybody uses. Sharp prov only goes on a roast pork.

Whiz is great, but the places I hit in Baltimogadishu use shredded mozzarella provolone blend.

Woodrows is legit--one of my favorite in the city (it is a slightly jazzed-up version of the classic)
