Paramotor Crash during Takeoff
Launching a trike with crosswind can result in disaster. Learned the hard way on my second trike flying attempt. Broken propeller, netting and front wheel assembly. Grounded until a replacement propeller is purchased.

Informative video, we have all made the mistake of the urgency to fly. Once you decide to fly you are on your own. On the take off run dont be in a hurry to get off, always allow 10 seconds settle time to make sure all is ok. I noticed that as soon as your wing has launched you are on the gas, let it do what it wants, its amazing what you can recover from and still get off safely.

Thanks for the good tip. I Carried on a habit paragliding/ridge soaring. You’re on the edge of a cliff, as soon as your canopy inflates you’ve got to be in a torpedo position and off the cliff.

You mentioned switching wind directions and having to reset your wing multiple times....me having been flying for 14 years...this would have been my first warning....unstable air. mabe if you sat it out for a bit..the wind would have settled into a constant direction. glad your ok....Fly safe!

Thanks for the advise. Yeah, learned the hard way. I also should’ve aborted before wheels up. I since went back to foot launch and will try the trike again after repair. I just realized that you have more control on the takeoff run on foot as opposed to trike.

@@RobNavPPG yes you do........you can side step easily as needed to get the wing established if it should come up off center. I tried the trike once...didnt care for it..didnt feel like I was part of the package.. just sitting there with a lap belt..no harness..felt weird...then sold it.

The one thing I would mention as a trike pilot of 200 hours was if you listen to your throttle on take off you accelerated when you started lifting off. You then when you had a little oscillation backed off on the throttle however your trike had already started to get airborne. With a trike I have found that when you have take off speed the worst thing you can do is back off once you start leaving the ground. You will always have a little oscillation caused by torque or wind and you want to get clear of the ground as quickly as you can. You did however seem to have a too much break on for take off which greatly curtails your ability to correct any problems including engine outs close to ground. Remember you never pass the point of no return on the ground during take off. The point of no return is the second your trike leaves the ground. For me if I cannot control the oscillation of the glider on the ground abort and set up again or go home.One last thing to remember is if you have any wind like you obviously did make sure you are not in rotor as that will cause the wind to swirl and change direction. Not being able to see the area you attempted to take off from it appears there is a wind block (trees or building) off to the left that could be causing your shifting wind direction. I can see this due to the fact your glider did not overshute you when you abruptly landed, but fell behind which would not happen in low or nil wind. Sorry to see you have an accident and very brave of you to publish your accident.

Very good accident analysis. In retrospect, I 100% agree with what you’ve observed. I was headed toward a school building whcih was approx 100 yards or less which could’ve created the rotors. I did remember abruptly throttling down up to killing the motors when I felt that I was totally sideways. Never experienced being almost 90* sideways foot launching. It scared me. First major accident in my logbook. Really appreciate your feedback. This community is awesome. Will sub to your channel. Another youtuber to get tios from.

Get a convex mirror and mount it on the front on the goose neck of the front forks then you can concentrate on looking forward and keeping the wing steady above you and also judging your speed better! I had the same problem when I started flying but with the mirror it will make a world of difference!

Personally, I didn't see any indication of " wind", however, no movement of air is likely very rare. Calm does not mean " no movement of air"
@RobNavPPG
@RobNavPPG 3 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell on video. Wind that late afternoon was variable 3-6mph. You are absolutely correct. Calm does not mean no surface air current from gound up. Plus, our accelleration forward against say 2mph headwind or crosswind equates to a higher flow. I forgot the equation. Accelleration =15mph, 2mph headwind =X

Crosswind was NOT the problem. When the wing inflated, you should have taxied whilst backing off of the throttle, and sorted the oscillation BEFORE rolling onto full power. Anytime you lift off with an oscillation, then you are in a serious situation close to the ground, that can end up in a crash landing. Always sort out oscillations before taking off. Also, if you know the direction of the "prevailing wind" , for example, if the forecast is a SE wind over the area, and it is light enough to switch around, it can often switch 360 degrees, between cycles(I see this happen on light days). So rather than setting up 4 times, chasing the wind direction, just set up with the prevailing wind, and wait for the wind to line up with your layout, and then take off. www.glideamerica.com

Thanks for the input. N-NW is our prevailing wind and took off headed West that day facing a school building. Yeah, my 2nd wheeled takeoff attempt was a total failure. Now, I am grounded since. Sucks!

@@RobNavPPG Just remember that when you are launching, you are flying the wing, and NOT the trike, or motor. The motor only pushes you forward. You must be in full control of the wing before you power up to launch. Oscillations are the enemy here.

You can takeoff crosswind but you have to wait until you have the wing stabilized before getting into the throttle. Practice taxi in those conditions before you try to commit. Also practice it on landing, as it will help translate to takeoff skills. When it first started going right, follow along with heading change on the trike.

get a windsock or better a nylon streamer to time the wind cycles and launch when the cycle is right. I dont fly trikes but would like to in the near future as I hate those no wind foot launch mornings.

You are absolutely correct CraigSon. My laziness and complacency packing up a streamer bites me in the okole. Over confident is also a factor thinking 99% of my past launches were flawless. Thanks for the tip. Keeps me grounded/humbled.

Bad wing layout, not enuff A,s, bad wing control, bad throttle control, when u fix damage get a old wing and kite it up and down feild without launching til u can do figures of 8.... Any fool can fly, wing control is a skill
