Great video. I really appreciate the comparison of these two comparable bags. I loved the fact that you actually packed items into them to do a volume comparison. I spent some time checking out both in a store and just didn't really feel like the Patagonia bag had more space. It was good to see that to show true here too.

Thanks! I was curious because the Osprey bag looked bigger, even though it was listed as smaller. I think I'll start doing a volume comparison test on all my reviews now 👍

@@OneBagTravels Have you had the chance to look at the Marmot Long Hauler Duffel series? The small lists as 35 liters and the medium at 50 liters. The thing that really interests me is the fact that they have two end pockets that both seem plenty large. The one downside I feel both of the bags in this comparison is lack of good separate pockets for keeping things organized.
@OneBagTravels

@@spydre8 I have not looked at the Long Hauler yet. It looks really similar to the Osprey Transporter. I was considering looking at this one, as well as the North Face Base Camp. I might have to go buy some more bags! =) I think the good and bad thing about duffels is they don't have internal organization. Some people like them because they are simple, but on the downside they lack organization.

It's obvious that Patgonia was, shall we say, describing their duffel volumes in a genourous fashion. The new line from Patagonia reduced the capacity but increased the dimensions. That's right - the new Patgonia 55L Black Hold Duffel bag is BIGGER than the old 60L.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 4 жыл бұрын
Generous is right! 🤣 The same is true for the 40L duffel. The previous version was 45L duffel, they removed it from the website then it reappeared a few weeks later as the "Patagonia Black Hole 40L", but with exactly the same dimensions as the 45L! I haven't had a chance to buy the new version yet, but I suspect it's the exact same bag with a different name. But, I gott say, kudos to Patagonia, at least they acknowledged their mistake and took steps to fix it 👍

The real value in the pantagonia bag is it’s ability to fold into itself so you could essentially pack it as an extra bag when travelling to take back extra items from your trip It’s not meant to be comfy. It’s meant to be portable
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels Жыл бұрын
True, but you still have to carry it when it's full 🤷‍♂️

Sorry but have you actually tried to fold that Patagonia bag into itself? I have been shopping for these bags and that's one of the things I tried to do at the REI store. None of these are particularly easy to fold, but the Black Hole was near-impossible. I fought extensively with it but could not get it back into it's self-pack zipper compartment. So I asked the REI staffer to show me and then watched as he struggled for 5 minutes, really working up a sweat trying to force it back together, and eventually barely forcing it under the zipper in a stiff, awkward, messy lump. He said they really aren't meant to be packed up like that once they've been opened -- not a very satisfying explanation.

@@OneBagTravels yes 😭 I finally decided on this bag, till I found out the shoulder strap is gone. Now I need to reevaluate everything again 😭 would be amazing if you could do a travel/duffle bag 2024 update on your site. I read the 2020 one yesterday, which was awesome, but all the bags have been changed (and downgraded) now four years later.

The Patagonia looks nicer and more of a duffle. The Osprey looks more like a hybrid backpack. Whenever I see hybrids I think, just use a backpack. A duffle should be a simple duffle bag. I just wish the interior compressions straps on the patagonia were designed better.
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
The Osprey is definitely more like a backpack. But the new version of the Patagonia doesn't have a shoulder strap, which makes it harder to carry like a duffel. But you're right, when you put better backpack straps on a duffel, at some point the style kind of blends into a hybrid backpack.

Looking at this again it seems major problem with Osprey is you can't comfortably do top carry like a normal duffel, major problem with Patagonia is your can't carry comfortably as a backpack... I suspect you're done with Duffels but if one were to come your way I would be curious to see how a Marmot stacks up. They seem to have some sort of hand hold that gather the backpack straps together to make top carry an option.

Osprey works better as a duffel carry than Patagonia works as a backpack carry. Short trips are fine, but not for long trips

So if the interior pocket can be accessed from both inside and outside, is that not a security vulnerability when travelling? You can obviously lock the main zip, but are you not leaving an entrance on the side? Thanks.

Great video. I loved it, very descriptive and useful. I'm traveling to Europe for 1 month and I'm looking for a backpack like the ones you showed, but none of them have “padding on the back”. Do you know of a bag that has a lot of space to store clothes, that I can take on the plane as a carry on and also that is comfortable to carry as a backpack?

@@OneBagTravels The Mystery Ranch 40l looks really good as well.. this will be a carry on ...and I will have a checked wheeled bag. Durability Versatility and Abrasion Resistance are the main issue . So what do you think of the 2 bags?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisputnam4616 Durability and abrasion resistance wise, the Mystery Ranch Mission Duffel shadow color with 1000D Cordura is probably the best. That fabric will stand up to almost anything, but it's not water proof. The black color is the 840 nylon with TPU, so it's going to be almost identical to the Osprey. The Patonia and Osprey use very similar fabrics. Black hole is 900D ripstop, and Osprey is 840D nylon (not ripstop). Both have a TPU coating, a waterproof laminate which is very durable but will eventually scratch or peel if you are too rough with it. I'd say the Patagonia is slightly more durable than the Osprey, because the TPU looks a little thicker, but it's not significant.

Great review. Thank you!!! What are your thoughts then on using the 60L Patagonia BH instead, as a carry-on for US airline travel?
@OneBagTravels
@OneBagTravels 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The 60 liter black hole duffel might be a little big for a carry on, it's 25" x 13" x 10", while the max carry on size for many US airlines is 22" x 14" x 9". It's also going to be pretty heavy to carry around 60 liters on your back with those straps, so I wouldn't do it if you're going to be carrying the bag for long periods of time.

I've used the Osprey Transporter 65 as a carry on even on smaller planes for domestic travel and not really had issues getting it to fit in any overhead bin. The real trick is to not pack it right full. If you leave just a little "squishing" room then you can make it squish into the right shape to fit.
