Is this jacket really waterproof? Definitely watch this review before buying any waterproof breathable shell jacket, I really want to help manage your expectations.
I do love the Patagonia Men's Torrentshell, it's such a good quality rain jacket, the stitching is perfect, it's lightweight, packable, the left pocket doubles up as a stuff sack (which is great when you know how to fold it) it's strong, a good fit and it will definitely keep you dry for longer, but there are a few things you should know about overhyped waterproof hiking gear.
Check it out here: amzn.to/2UtXh1W
I took the Torrentshell with me to Indonesia and was wearing it while on my bike and it completely poured down with rain and the water cut straight through it. It's perfect for consistent drizzle or light showers, but definitely, understand that most rain gear is overhyped on its waterproofing capabilities.
So instead of relying on this solely, it's always a good idea to have a backup such as a poncho for those unexpected downpours.
For £110.00 it is still a good price, especially because of the design, features and build quality, this jacket will last you a very long time and worth buying over a cheaper alternative.
BTW, I MADE THIS INCREDIBLE BIT OF GEAR

Great review, I've had the half zip torrentshell about 5 years, got it for £65 and for that price I really rate it. Spot on about how waterproof it is, excellent for drizzle, after whole days walking in moderate rain I'll be slightly damp underneath, torrential rain soaks in pretty fast. Breathability can feel uncomfortably low if the weather is warm or I'm exerting myself, plus not being able to unzip all the way gives limited ventilation options and makes it a less versatile layer.

Thanks very much for watching! Yeah definitely with you. It’s not that it’s a bad jacket, just thought I’d manage everyone’s expectations. Rain gear is the most overhyped hiking gear out there. Hope that people find this video useful. Thanks again!

The new 3-layer one may as well be a different jacket entirely, wayyy more heavy duty now. But at a cost, about 40% heavier than the 2 layer Torrentshell. I prefer the Slate Sky, $20 more and a lot less baggy and heavy when hiking or camping.

For everyone watching this in 2021: the Torrentshell he‘s talking about is the old 2.5 layer model. Patagonia released the Torrentshell 3L (3 layers) in early 2020. This should definitely make a difference when compared to the 2.5 model. In some review someone said he had the 2.5L before he got the 3L. There was a noticeable difference in the stiffness of the jacket, because there simply was a thicker material/more layers. So probably also more water resistant/proof (whatever you call it).

As soon as you said water resistant, instead of water proof. That told me all I needed to know. Those terms are not interchangable and it infuriates me that companies like Patagonia think they are. There's a big difference.

I have the same jacket in a teal color. I was able to find it perfectly fine, brand new at REI on sale for less than $50. It was a no-brained buy. I also have found it bombproof and water RESISTANT for all but the most intense downpours. I love Patagonia clothing and their lifetime guarantee. I am always more than willing to pay a premium price for their gear because I know I can absolutely count on it to do it’s intended job. I would absolutely recommend buying this jacket. You will be more than pleased.

Thanks for the great review! I've had my eye on this rain jacket for quite some time and I finally bit the bullet and ordered one after having it in my cart on the Dick's Sporting Goods website for the past week as I kept debating on whether or not to pull the trigger and get it. With spring just around the corner, I need to replace my North Face rain jacket that I've had for a number of years and I really wanted to give Patagonia a try this time. I've been wearing North Face jackets exclusively for the past 15 years or so, but many of my friends wear Patagonia and they all seem to love the brand, so I'm going to give it a try. I ordered the black one. It was definitely a bit pricey at $150, but I know with Patagonia's extremely high quality, this will be a jacket that will last me for years, so I'm confident that I'll get my money's worth out of it.

Good honest feedback there. I bet a frogg toggs rainset could keep the water out just as good, and the lack of the tight fit makes it more practical in creating that inner microclimate for distributing moisture. Personally, I tried bringing a heavy Stormberg Stormflod for a 350 km hike in the Norwegian mountains this year. It was super efficient in heavy rain, but quite heavy and cumbersome in use for light downfall when you dont know if the switch is going to make you sweat or protect against rain. I would not recommend it for warmer climates, but if you wear this with a thick wool sweather underneath, it is the most efficient clothing in freezing rain.

Great review! I wonder if the 3L version is any better with water resistance. I have a Arc'teryx Beta AR that is my absolute I must stay dry/warm “life depends on it”jacket its a trade off tho. It is the most water proof jacket I own. It has never wet out, leaked or failed. After more than 10 years I've never had to reapply DWR to it. Ive used it on numerous ski trips and even a winter trip to Iceland. There are many trade offs tho with the Beta AR. It isn't the most comfortable jacket. It isn't very packable and the material is kinda stiff and loud. So my wife and I tried the Patagonia Torrent Jacket, but It wet out so fast on a trip to Costa Rica we returned them as soon as we got home. Currently we are using The North Face Dryzzel jacket as our light duty “waterproof” shells and it is performing much better than the old Torrent jacket did. I wore it the other day in a very heavy down pour, trying to repair a roof leak for over an hour and didn't get wet. I'm interested to see how this new Torrent jacket would do vs TNF Dryzzel.

Good video, well presented and to the point with real life experience. I wish I had read this earlier. I spent a lot of money on this coat - £180 - as I needed one that was waterproof in a heavy downpour while walking. All the reviews I read were positive. My cheap Peter Storm jacket was good for drizzle only. I wonder how the Torrentshell 3L compares to Goretex jackets? Perhaps I should have bought the Berghaus instead, not as nice looking, but well made and a similar price.

Thanks for the video. I strongly recommend Quechua MH500 WTP W Jacket. It actually is waterproof, has armpit zips, offers a nice colour range and is really cheap! Thanks for the excellent review! I just purchased this jacket for an upcoming trip to Patagonia in 4 months. I was looking for a lightweight, WATERPROOF, jacket as it rains often and heavy at times there. I wore it for the first time 2 days ago to test it’s waterproof claim and went out for about a 3 miles trek in a moderate rainfall and when I took it off, my mid layer was wet! Luckily, I had a base layer which kept me dry. I really love this jacket. So many positive features as you mentioned. And yes, I have the zipper problem also! Ha But I have to say, I am disappointed in the fact I got wet after an only 3 mile walk in moderate rainfall. UGH. Not sure if I should take it back and continue looking or if I should grab a disposable poncho as you recommended. I really do like it but i don’t like the fact I got wet. If I heard you correctly, with any waterproof garment, if you are out long enough, you will get wet. I heard you loud and clear about managing expectations. I will be doing multi day hikes and chances are very good it will rain on us. Would love to hear your opinion. Thanks.

Hydrostatic Head. All rain gear is tested to this including tents. Under normal conditions this isn’t a problem. Riding a scooter in torrential rain is way over the HH so water will get in. Many research papers on this . The University of Leeds has done some excellent work on this and DWR etc.

Main problem for breathable fabric is humidity. Monsoon in Indonesia will be very high humidity so sweat doesn't migrate out even if rain doesn't get in. Most cyclists prefer to get wet in rain unless in smart clothes while commuting to work. Nicer to get wet from rain than boil in the bag.

All depends on how long you’re planning on being out in the rain for and how intense the rain is. I’m investing in a Frogg Toggs rain suit for when the going gets tough. So I'll start off by saying I was born in the US. I know this video is two years old. I finally had the chance to go inside a Patagonia store in Prague recently. I tried this jacket on, hence why I'm watching a review after trying it on for the first time. I did not have an issue with the zipper. What I've noticed living in Europe is that men's jackets have the teeth and the grabber are connected from the opposite way compared to the US. For example, my Shoffel and Jack Wolfskin jackets "break away" from the left. All my American branded jackets "break away" from the right. Not a design flaw.

Great review. I can confirm this is not a breathable jacket, I wouldn't receomend this for any activity, it feels like in a plastic bag;/ so I'm again in the market for a jacket which is brathable and waterproof at the same time, don't know if that is possible though ....

To your experienced judgment, do you think the Torrenshell is worth it, or is better to save up for their Polyester or Gore-Tex jacket which is a lot more costly? If is not really waterproof, then it is probably not worth it.

Hiya, I’ve never used that jacket so couldn’t advise fully. But I’ve been using Frogg Toggs which are amazing for how cheap they are. But only for 3 season. And as Jack says. It’s not cut out for extended periods of heavy rain. You’ll want something with more coverage and that lets the rain run off. So the Frogg Toggs do just that in my experience however they’re not built to last. 👍

Why can't Patagonia make jackets with the same nylon or polyester that is used to make tents? They can withstand a tropical rainstorm for days without letting a drop of water through, although I believe there also some plastic in the material mix but who cares if it makes the fabric really 100% waterproof no matter the severity of any torrent or tempest.

They all suck. Ive had so many over the last 30 years and they all suck. In the last 10 years only a handful of OEMs make the fabric and sell it on exclusives to brands with whatever fraction of a difference between them. Basically its plastic weave with a rubber backing thats been aerated during manufacturing to make its have tiny "pores" or truthfully, popped bubbles. The only thing thats actually waterproof is plastic. You commoner garden plastic 'Mac' or low weight VCP (vinyl coated polyster). Im sure theres a market for a light weight cotton jacket that has been panelled with waterproof material.

Thanks Bazanji. My experience with the jacket was that in heavier downpours, the inside of the jacket was wet, especially on the arms and toward the bottom of the torso. I wasn’t hiking or working out so it wasn’t my sweat. My friend also took a look and noticed it was wet on the inside after we were out in the rain. I strive to give my honest opinion on every video I make without bias, showing my own experiences with gear on trail and in every day situations. I’m not saying this is a bad jacket, but try to help my viewers by managing their expectations as rain gear is certainly one of the most overhyped categories of outdoor clothing. Some of the new ones and breathable to end packable. So I wouldn't buy this coat thanks for letting us know you should just tell people do not buy this jacket. It'd be really dangerous to get wet and cold and some situations especially if you do somewhere remote so this is a dangerous coat to rely on to keep dry. Say it like it is.
