The noseride is one of surfing’s peak moments: part fluid dynamics, part magic. But how does noseriding actually work? What makes this suspension between sea and sky even possible? The Physics of Noseriding explores the question through the eyes of Namaala, a young surfer whose people were flying on the water before the world even knew what surfing was. Her curiosity invites us to examine the sensation of levitation that unfolds as wave, surfboard and surfer come together for surfing’s fluid dance.
Written and directed by Lauren L. Hill. Director of Photography: Jai Anderson. Starring: Namaala Slabb. Supporting surfers: Belinda Baggs, Ari Browne, Leah Dawson, Lauren L. Hill, Rosie Jaffurs, Lola Mignot, Josie Prendergast, Matt Cuddihy, Elise Trigger, Crystal Thornburg-Homcy, Dave Rastovich, Crystal Dzigas and Kelis Kaleopaʻa.

the point is putting the board on the inside rail as if you wanted to get out of the wave and your weight on the nose will keep it falling into the face of the wave, creating a metastable system

Lovely video, addresses a poorly understood experience. Of course nothing like the fluid dynamics around a longboard is remotely simple. The Coanda effect may be operational on the deck of the board but that would generate lift on the tail which is not quite what is wanted, and there is not a lot of ‘jet’ of water (relative to the surrounding water) under the board. I wonder if the flow around the tail rocker is more important in generating a downward pressure on the tail. Think of an inverted aeroplane wing (not quite a perfect analogy but close enough). Look at the shape of Ben Skinner’s Cherrypicker. The price of more curved flow around the tail is a slower board but for nose riding that’s usually ok

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:15 🏄‍♂️ *Noseriding in surfing is a unique skill that requires balance and technique.* 01:47 🌊 *Wave riding begins with the sun's uneven heating of the planet, creating wind and waves.* 02:22 🏄‍♀️ *Surfers have always used balance and forward trim for nose riding.* 03:08 🏄‍♂️ *Longboards are designed for subtlety and minimizing effort in the water.* 03:52 🌊 *The physics of surfing involves forces like buoyancy, gravity, drag, and momentum.* 04:55 🌊 *Nose riding balances forces like drag and momentum for speed and stability.* 05:44 🌊 *The Koanda effect plays a crucial role in keeping the board stuck to the wave face.* 06:54 🏄‍♂️ *Shifting weight and subtle adjustments are key to nose riding on a longboard.* 07:53 🏄‍♀️ *The "Hang Hip" technique involves committing weight to the nose and dancing on the board.* 08:51 🌊 *The real function of nose riding in surfing is a balance of physics and indescribable magic.* Made with HARPA AI

Veeeery few females can actually nose ride. It is extremely rare to see a female, cross stepping, noseriding or especially nose riding "correctly". You have more chance of seeing a flamingo pumping gas at the gas station. THAT's how rare it is !
