It's also important to point out that oftentimes merchants will take both the North and South tack, since they can move pesh from Katapesh to just about all of the other cities on the South tack.

This was really cool in that we got to see how various nations interact with each other. You said this was unlike anything else you’ve done previously, but I personally would love to see this become the first in a new category: exploring the technologies of Pathfinder or exploring other transnational ideas (like say the magical academies of the various nations). Just a thought.

It'd be really interested in kind doing an across the board look at tech. Where it's at what level and where. This was kind of preview of that in some sense because weirdly while many DMs get hung up on whether to have guns or not, and go right past the idea of long ships next to clippers next to ironclads.

@@TheInsatiableDrBoom - Any kind of follow-up to what Arazni went through in Trant's Grasp would be a fun campaign. Honestly, if you're Arazni-curious, you could just run that 1E AP. You could probably streamline it and run it in fewer sessions as a kind of prequel to a follow-up game set in the Impossible Lands.

@TheMythKeeper 1E AP? My players just like the idea of playing a more grand political kind of thing and I thought the lore you showcased does a great job of being neutral until the players pick a side. Made me think of Fallout New Vegas, Latveria-Wakanda style deal.

@@TheInsatiableDrBoom - Yeah, a Geb/Nex/Alkenstar story in the vein of Fallout New Vegas where the players get to pick their faction would be awesome. Also, a lot of work for a GM though! I always propose starting with an Adventure Path because those games are 90% more likely to keep going. If you have the time to build your own, so much the better. It all depends on what else you have going on in your life and how much time you can dedicate to telling your own story.

Excellent video! There's just one nautical definition you missed. Before the invention of the rudder ships were steered by a long board on the right hand side of a ship with a handle at the top. If this hit a solid object it might break, which is why you drew up in a port with the other side against the quay. Thus, the left side of the ship is, as you mentioned, the port side and the right is the steerboard side... or starboard as we now say.

Im sure this typology is right for Pathfinder, but it’s worth remembering that in the real Age of Sail, a “man o’ war” was really any armed ship, especially one that sailed for a navy and “battleship” refers to a 20th century steam driven ship, not anything made of wood and sail driven. The English term for the classes of ship these apparently represent was “ship of the line” further distinguished by number of guns.
@TheMythKeeper
@TheMythKeeper 7 ай бұрын
Yeah that's all correct. I think Man O'War being the biggest class of ship is more of a general game thing (probably originates here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_O%27_War_(game) as its not a distinction unique to Pathfinder.

36:15 It’s times like this that I wish Paizo would just give us a full world map. So many references to peoples and places off the edge of the Inner Sea map that the characters would know but that the players don’t have a clue. When my catfolk speaks of his home nation of Murraseth with pride, is he inflating the importance of three whole cities? Is it actually a respectably sized region on par with Osirion or Cheliax? Is it the entire southern half of Garund and he’s really being humble? No clue!
@TheMythKeeper
@TheMythKeeper 7 ай бұрын
If it helps, that is the canonical world-map, it just doesn't have the detailed nation borders on it. And Murraseth isn't arbitrarily placed by me, I did as much research as I could to try and place it in roughly the right spot. I do believe its meant to be located around that big inland sea that you can see there. Assuming the scale is even close to accurate, that means Murraseth is about the size of the Mwangi Expanse. Its absolutely huge. Just my 2 cents... But yes, it would be lovely to just get a full world map.

Viking long ships did not have a Rudder. They had what is call a steerboard off to the right side, Thus Steerboard becomes Starboard. This is also the reason why ships dock on the Port side of the vessle as the Steerboard would run a ground in shallow water if they docked on the same side. Remember most viking ships did not "Dock" they would run aground along the banks. Dock didn't exist. Thus we get the name of Starboard and Port
@alganhar1
@alganhar1 7 ай бұрын
No, actually not quite. Originally Port was larboard. This idea that most ships docked to larboard in the age of sail is a ridiculous myth also, at least early age of sail, they docked whichever side the wind and tides allowed them to dock most easily. It literally depended on the harbour, if the wind and tide were against a larboard docking then they would dock starboard.... Larboard was eventually dropped because in the English Language larboard and starboard simply sound too similar in conditions with a lot of noise, like say a battle or a storm. People also worked out ways to use anchors to say kedge a ship into dock on the port side exclusively IF the harbour was of a size to allow you to do that. It was only a fair distance into the age of sail, when ships started to carry multiple types of anchor and as the full sailing rigs were refined that 'port' side became truly port side.... But thats about the time Port started taking over the use of larboard....
@TheMythKeeper
@TheMythKeeper 7 ай бұрын
You're both right of course, I just didn't want to get into this level of detail.
@ohthreefiftyone
@ohthreefiftyone 7 ай бұрын
@@alganhar1I’ve assumed that “Port” replaced “larboard” in English in the 19th century because as steam engines became more common parts of the ship just got louder and it was harder to hear the crucial difference between “starboard” and “larboard.” But I’ve never looked to confirm that.

Why are the sails of the Linnorm Kings x + Red? Shouldn't they have x + Gold(as in: Gold Linnorm)? Kinda like the united Linnorm Kings has Red + Gold.
