Let's take a quick look at the new Pathfinder Survival Bivvy. This is a great piece of kit to add to your shelter set to help retain body heat and keep the elements out. This bivvy is lightweight and compact enough to add to your regular kit, your emergency gear or even a bug out bag. Check out the linbk below for more information.

This fulfills a big gap in my daily carry back pack for an emergency sleep system. For winter environments I could probably add a compact sleeping bag liner and been in good shape! I can’t wait to get one!

I STATED IN THE VIDEO: this is like a Tyvek material, but it is indeed Tyvek 60GSM. Thank you for you time and interest!

you MUST put either a foot thick layer of debris under you, or have a sleeping pad, or you'll lose all of your body heat thru conduction to the ground. Another feasible answer is to pull a net hammock thru the bivy. Set the hammock about 6" off of the ground (with you in it) and kick debris under it, so as to stop air from flowing under you. You can also stuff debris between the hammock and the bivy, increasing the insulative effect.. I greatly prefer the 2Go Systems Trifecta XL size bivy, cause it can be worn as a poncho or used as a tarp/groundsheet. It's much bigger, and has full double zippers and lots of tie out loops. It's 1.5 lbs and $95. Dont get the regular size unless you're a small Asian guy, Cut off the rainflaps from the zipper, or they WILL jam with you inside of the bivy. Tape together a couple of the 2.3 oz each, heavy duty 55 gallon drum liners and use them to "envelope' the bivy. This will make it much more capable of stopping wind and rain. When used with a net hammock pulled thru the bivy, with ridgelines, , you can sleep ok in this setup at 40F in just cammies, gloves, unlaced shoes, balaclava, 3 sock liners and shemagh. If you use a set of longjohns, or a pair of 1/4 lb each Amazon bugnet suits and a pair of Amazon 1/2 lb each 'cut leaf" type of camo nets as longjohns, you can sleep ok at 30F, or if you have both, at 20F. I use a set of Wiggy's net longjohns all of the time when it's below room temps.

I've been using the 2Go Systems Trifecta Bivy for several years. This is very similar to it.

I went with the 2go system rain poncho zipper. I like to wear it into the woods when it raining, set up a secondary tarp for above cover, then take off the poncho and place it on the ground as a sheet. Of course I could wrap myself as a thermal bivy but I haven’t got myself into that situation.

Length is great, but please add some width to the line up. I have two SOL bivvys for my wife and son, which fit them fine, but use a 2 Go Trifecta for myself. The extra 6 inches in width makes a big difference in comfort for us big guys, as well as the longevity of the bag.

Looks like a cool product. No pun intended. Something that could be coupled with it is these zip up poncho liners or woobies that are being offered by some of these woobie hoodie/jacket makers. Or the Swagman Roll. But with the quarter zip it would be somewhat cumbersome. But it does look like a nice product.

Matt, you said in the vid that it " BREATH' S, has anyone tested this out in a cooler temp area or overnight to see if it do's what there saying it do's ?. Condensation is the achilles heel of all these survival bags, but if it truly works, an can be proven as you say, I'm all in on this. What is the weight, you didn't say ?. Thx for the vid

Would a wool sleeping bag liner help mitigate condensation?

Hey there, I have used something similar to this new product from Self Reliance Outfitters,The bivy that I used was from SOL(survive, outdoors, longer) it did what it advertised but maybe some sort of a liner would have been useful.the temperature of the weather was anywhere from five to eleven degrees Celsius and I will admit that I shivered a little at about five am when the rain started coming down but it kept my fee dry.

I have the SOL version also and used it on a camping trip that went down to the low 50s at night. Unless the Pathfinder version is significantly better, DO NOT rely on this to save your life in cold weather! It wasn't until I put a $6 mylar reflective bag over this SOL that I was finally warm enough to get some sleep.

Was really interested for light kit paired with poncho liner but short zipper makes it difficult to get in and out several times for an old man to pee. Still might get it.

Well, it only took me 3 months on this one Matt. Sorry I'm so late to the party. I like it. Shelter is the tightest part of the 5Cs so I really like this. Based on your experience, how cold would you go in this?

Of course the big question is, will it collect condensation on the inside and make you wet.
@brentsaylor1725

Of course it will. If it's completely waterproof there's no way around it. The idea is to save your life.

He did say it breath's, so that would tell me it would let condensation out, but real world testing is needed to see if it do's what they say it do's.

There is definitely more to it than that but I would also recommend sticking with what works for you. I like wool blankets also. The bivvy bag however is super lightweight and holds heat in exceptionally well while keeping wind and moisture out. At just over 8 ounces, it is definitely a worthwhile piece of kit in my opinion.

TOO SMALL!!! Reflective material need an air gap to work, make it wider so a person wearing a jacket and an inflatable pad will fit inside, should be looose, that air pad would become the air gap to absorb reflected radiant heat from a person's body and then you have an actual survival product, as is ain't no good.
