Mahipal ji, each dynasty or empire centered in Delhi built their own capital city in Delhi. You should also mention their power center in modern-day Delhi for better appreciation of the vast expanse of Delhi's heritage. In chronological order: * The Tomara and Chauhan Rajput Dynasties had their capital as Lal Kot or Rai Pithora in Mehrauli in modern-day South Delhi. * The Mamluk Capital was Mehrauli in modern-day South Delhi, which is home to the famous Qutub Minar. Modern-day Mehrauli was the capital of Prithviraj Chauhan and so the Mamluks destroyed the existing capital and rebuilt their capital in the same location. * The Khilji Capital was Siri (or Siri Fort) in modern-day South Delhi. The famous lake in Hauz Khas nearby was dug up by Khiljis to supply water to their capital Siri. * The Tughlaqs had three different capital cities: ** Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq had his capital in Tughlaqabad, a big fort in modern-day South-East Delhi. ** Muhammad bin-Tughlaq had his capital in Jahaanpanah-Adilabad, a massive fort running for some 10kms and connecting the older capitals of Mehrauli and Siri in modern-day South Delhi. ** Firozshah Tughlaq had his capital in Firozabad or Firoz Shah Kotla (where the cricket stadium is also located) in modern-day Center-East Delhi. * The Lodhis had shifted their capital to Agra to evade foreign attacks on Delhi. * The Sur Dynasty under Hemchandra Vikramaditya had its capital in Shergarh, which was later renamed as Deenpanah by the Mughal emperor Humayun, and is today famous as Purana Qila (Old Fort) in modern-day Center-East Delhi. The famous Humayun's Tomb is located nearby. * Then Akbar and Jahangir had shifted their capitals to Agra and Lahore, before Shahjahan brought the Mughal Capital back to Delhi. * The Mughal Capital all the way till 1858 was Shahjahanabad, which is today famously called Puraani Dilli (Old Delhi) and houses the famous Red Fort and Jama Masjid, in modern-day Center-East Delhi. * The British Capital was New Delhi, which is located in modern-day Central Delhi and which continues to serve as India's capital till date.

Actually, Illtutmish loved his son Nasiruddin (Oldest) and trained him to become the next heir, he was actually his favorite son and quite capable. It's wrong to say that he did not consider any of his sons worthy. But Nasiruddin died in a war untimely (1229) which actually caused depression to Illtutmish as he went into grieving. Only after that he decided upon Raziya to take over.

The Mongols did not just invade and conquer; they exterminated civilisations. To give just an idea, during Genghis’s invasion of the Persian Empire, these were the number of people put to death in some of the cities overcome by the Mongols in 1222 CE: Urgench, 1 million; Merv, 700,000; Nishapur, 1.7 million; Rey, 500,000 (an estimate based on the order that every male should be killed in a city of approximately a million people); and Herat, 1.6 million. That’s nearly 6 million people just from these cities, at a time when the world population is estimated at 400 million. In other words, the Mongols are said to have killed 1.5% of the world population in a single campaign... Allauddin Khalji .... The Battle of Kili was fought between the Mongols of the Chagatai Khanate under Qutlugh Khwaja and the Delhi Sultanate led Alauddin Khilji in 1299. It resulted in the expulsion of the Mongol forces from the Indian Subcontinent.. What is not well-known, however, is that Khilji, for all his faults, saved India from a fate much worse than even his own oppressive rule - that of the murderous Mongols, who tried to invade the Indian subcontinent six times during his reign as the sultan of Delhi, and failed miserably, thanks to his brilliance as a general, the quality, discipline, and bravery of his army and its commanders, and their superior military tactics.
