My best friend has an IUD since she is often sexually active and she said it’s helped her so much even though she’s had cramping and heavier periods. The IUD is one of the only birth controls I could ever get because they’re non hormonal. Hormonal birth control (which I learned from taking the pill) triggers my epilepsy:/ thank you for making this!!

Just so you know, IUD (Paragard is the only one non hormonal), but IUD (Mirena is not non hormonal).

@Allen Sentamu the copper iud is one of the only birth controls i could ever use since it’s non hormonal. Hormonal birth control makes my AEDs ineffective and lowers the medication levels in my blood, and also my AEDs are an enzyme medication, which means estrogen and progesterone break down faster when absorbed by the liver and therefore making hormonal birth control (including plan b) ineffective too. I’m glad the iud has been working for you!

I went with the Paragard (copper) IUD. I still had regular periods. It was in for 7 years (can be left in up to 10) and I never had a pregnancy scare in those 7 years. Just got it removed today - now that my husband and I are ready to move forward with having children! And to anyone that is curious; it was not nearly as uncomfortable nor painful to have it taken out as it was to get it inserted.

IUD are really good contraceptive. It should be more known, talked about & offer. In my country is very known & used. The Cooper IUD has metal, so is not recommended for people with heavy periods because the metal will make you bleed more. The hormonal IUD is used to treat Endometriosis, which is endometrial tissue that grows outside the endometrio(the very inside of the uterus). You have Endometriosis if you have HUGE PAIN,HEAVY BLEEDING & INFLAMMATION. Doctors don't ask, & even if you tell them they tell you is normal & so they don't treat you. Mirena is used for treating Endometriosis. Your period will disappear completely or partially

I have a Mirena IUD and absolutely love it. It helped to treat my endometriosis. It took about 8 months to get used to with constant bleeding for those months straight due to my condition. Finally happy to say that I no longer have horrible, painful periods where I couldn’t move, I was puking, etc. I only have break through bleed every once an awhile. Got I placed November 2021 and it’s worked wonders on pain management.

For anyone wondering, the IUD procedure is excruciatingly painful. Many women have shared their horror stories about how they FAINTED from the pain being so severe. It's STRONGLY advised that you only go to a doctor/hospital that will provide anesthesia and pharmaceutical grade pain medication such as an opioid when you get the IUD procedure! And be sure to research all of the risks and side effects prior to getting it as well! Reddit is a good place for anecdotal research.

I got my IUD 3 months ago and love it. Some tricks that I hope will help and maybe express what it felt like getting it done. So to start, I never had a baby let alone intercourse at the time. Now, I took half a dose of ibuprofen (400ml out of 800) and ate some bread, its important to eat even though you don't feel like eating (I sure as hell didnt) I'm glad I did as it gave me some strength and endurance to get through it. As soon as I got in the car, (I do recommend having someone drive you there and back) I added a heat pad over my ovaries, not neccesarily to suppress pain or relax any muscles, it was there for more of a distraction when they do it, focuse on this feeling instead of that feeling type of thing. I brought a little neck pillow to make sure I was comfortable and I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend bringing a neck pillow with you. I made sure to stay as still as possible to have the highest success of insertion without complications. So they added the instrument that opens you up (didnt hurt) they did an antiseptic on the entrance of the cervix (didnt hurt, felt like a q-tip, as it is, up there) and informed me that there was going to be a "pinch", meaning they were going to use theses tongs like things to open my cervix up and yea that was one hell of a pinch BUT as soon as she said "there's gonna be a pinch" I breathed in nice and heavy and I soon as I felt it I breathed out super fast and kept taking deep breaths in and out. The best way I can describe the pain was it felt metal-y blunt jab, like someone took a decent amount of your arm skin and twisted it really hard, doesn't really feel like a cramp per say. Its a very sudden pain but eventually goes away after a second or two. I was so focused on breathing and making sure to stay still that the actual IUD insertion didnt feel like anything and was done. From the moment I laid down on my neck pillow and opened them legs wide to them saying "its in, all I need to do is trim the strings" took about less then 3 minutes. They were honestly surprised on how good I did seeing how I never had a child/intercourse because they usually do IUDs for those people. My doctor tried to get me on the pills or the shots but I said "Nu". I'm a set it and forget it type girl and I couldn't be happier. The first 24 hours was a living hell. When I got home from the docters I took the other half dose of ibuprofen and laid in bed thinking I made a mistake getting this, this hurts so bad but heat pads, tea, and lots of sleep does wonders. I hope this helped and if you have questions let me know! EDIT: I forgot to mention I got the Kyleena one. Skyla and Kyleena were the ones recommend to me by my doctor. Skyla was 3 years and Kyleena was 5 years.

Wow you are brave!! Had mine today. It felt like I was having a contraction! (I have 2 kids) the doctor said my cervix was tight so it wasn’t so easy trying to insert. Definitely the hot pack helps! And so does staying calm and trying to think of something else. I was good right after the insertion. Mild cramping in the evening. I hope this regulates my periods . Fingers crossed 🤞

Im getting my iud replaced tomorrow for the smaller, 5 year one. My experience with the skyla (smaller, 3 yr IUD): insertion was extremely painful. Some light spotting after. My periods lightened. Extremely painful cramps before and during my periods throughout the full 3 years of having it. I’ve had it’s positioning checked multiple times and it has been in the correct position. Although it’s made my period pain sometimes unbearable, I don’t regret it. My case seems to be extremely rare, and I’ve never met another woman who experiences that level of pain with it. As a young woman, I would much rather be in pain during a week out of a month than get pregnant.

Thats what happened to me, The same day i had it put in, i was on the floor in a sidestreet in town with two babies in the pushchair needing nappies changing, had no phone an noone to call anyway,, was on the floor in the most pain i had ever been in for probably 5 or 6 hours no one came babies were crying, I got up eventually docs had closed by then i walked up the hill to my extremely mouldy rented house. Had to get it removed the next day as had trouble walking, then spent two years where i could barley walk i was in extreme pain every day for two years and gradually the pain got less and less the doctors wouldnt listen to me, then a few years later my bowel had a huge hole in it and had to have surgery i don't know if it was related, but yea basically struggled with pain since i got that horrible iud in.. I would never recommend it to anyone even though i always hear people in forums saying their great. Ruined my life and my doctor talked me into it oh man there are so many things doctors have done to me and my kids that have been detrimental to us.. When i think about my life if i didn't get coerced into horrific treatments by sold out doctors my whole life would have been better.. I suppose if i had been able to go out mabie i would have hurt myself there but id rather take my chances coz i never really hurt myself anyways..

Got my IUD about 3 days ago and wanted to share my experience so far! :) The insertion wasn't as bad as I had imagined. But I was also prepared for the absolute worst, having read the experiences of others. I had my IUD inserted at the start of my period (which was a requirement), and the docter perscribed painkillers to take the day before and an hour before the procedure. I believe not all doctors do this, and that might add to why my pain was very managable. I won't lie, you will feel it, but it only sucks for a minute and then you're done for 5 years. The afternoon after insertion I had cramps, which weren't worse than heavy period cramps. After that I hardly had any pain at all. You can't forget it, like the pill, since it's always there, and you don't feel it being in your body after placing it at all. So far, would def recommend it

Also, how about an update! Apparently it's already four months later. Still quite happy with it. At the start, I had a lot of spotting, e.g small bits of bleeding. This lasted quite long, I think 2/3 months. It was never a drastic amount, but it was a bit annoying. I dó think it made me put on a bit of weight, maybe 2 kilograms. But It's hard to say as it could also be because of my lifestyle. My period seems to be dissapearing. It was significantly lesser for 2 months. Then last month it was a 'normal' one. Hope this helps for anyone thinking about getting an IUD

I had the third one inserted today. Each iud is inserted for a period of 10-12 years. Mine is copper t. The first iud insertion is also your worst. The cramps are very intense with the first one but as you grow older, they become less intense and by the time you have your third one inserted all will be good. During the insertion, the procedure causes cramps. After the inserion, medium size cramps may occur, resembling either your second day of period or the way you feel when you have extreme indigestion and must go do No. 2. Your uterus is a muscle so it will contract to try to expel the iud if it can and hence this is why you feel the cramps. You wll also experience very light spotting, similar to the ones you feel when your perjod ends. Iuds are excellent, safe and a good method of contraception.

Week later got my period and the cramps have definitely been harder to deal with but nothing too bad, Midol helps. Definitely more bleeding as well. But no hormones! 😁 Insertion wasn’t too bad, just felt like heavy pressure and when it was inserted just a big cramp for less than 30 seconds. Then it was good after. They even offered snacks and water after. Let me give anyone a tip! They say to take 800mg of Ibuprofen 30-40mins before because it helps with swelling ! Definitely take it as it helps, take it up to 48 hrs after too !

Even if you are young an iud is a option! I got mine at 15 and love it. The pain is different for everyone but I went in a got it put in and it was only 3 painful points that went away right after 2secs. For 5 years of being protected trust me it is worth it.

My sister had one of these. she had to be rushed to the emergency room and missed my brothers wedding because of it. It wasn't to product it was because the hospital didn't disinfect it before they put it in so she had a really bad infection. to think of it if she didn't go to the hospital she would probably be dead right now.

@@uaa2800 definitely take the strongest pain reliever you have at least an hour BEFORE!!! I’ve found a list of things that help cramps online and I made a smoothie out of it and it’s been a lifesaver. Ginger, spinach, dark chocolate, pineapple juice, ginger kombucha (and to make it taste better I’ve added blueberries, strawberries, honey, avocado chunks). And make sure you have at least a few days off or can get them and make sure you have someone to drive you home, I couldn’t move for 3 days. I’m not trying to scare you because everyone reacts differently to it, but these are things that helped my experience

I got a Merina because of my heavy periods and endo, but it caused more than half my hair to fall out (i am NOT even kidding) and i gained a huge amount of weight even thou i was eating the same and still exercising the same as i am a fit person. My sex drive also practically disappeared. It also caused constant cramping even years after it was placed. My doc keep insisted it would get better , but it never did 4 years after. So i got that sucker taken out and all of weight fell off and my hair finally started to grow back again. I will never use a hormonal BC again.

I had the non hormonal in for a total of three months. Hormonal birth control gives me depression. Anyways, I thought it was going to kill me. Pain like I've never had in my life. Extended periods over a week to 9 days most times and spotting in between periods. Too much bleeding, almost three to four times more blood during periods then prior to insertion. Had to get it removed. 3 years later after removal, I still get really bad cramps even when I'm not on my period. Instead of monthly or twice a month cramping. Its down to once every 3-4 months. My doctor says he doesn't see anything . Because the pain is not constant it's hard to really explain and get treatment for. But it is getting better thankfully.
