patientMpower expands respiratory care research programme after securing NHS SBRI Healthcare funding. The award will fund a Randomised Control Trial (RCT) comparing usual, hospital-based care of patients after lung transplantation with an alternative, hybrid approach to care. In this technology-enabled pathway, every alternate out-patient appointment will be replaced by clinical review of health data collected using the patientMpower platform. The goal is to reduce patient burden whilst increasing clinician capacity.
The study will not only collect health outcome data, but will also report on the health economic impact of care transformation. This is vital in the wider adoption of technology to support new patient-centric models of respiratory care, and will have implications not just in lung transplant but also for other chronic lung conditions like Interstitial Lung Disease, cystic fibrosis, severe asthma and severe COPD.
Thanks to NHS England, SBRI Healthcare, The AHSN Network and The Accelerated Access Collaborative for awarding patientMpower. Also thanks to our partners: John Blaikley at Manchester University Hospital and the PI for the study, Elena Pizzo of University College London, and the patients and caregivers represented by New Start charity.
