2020 has been a hell of a year. I've started and finished many DIY projects, but none that felt good enough to show off. I finally decided to come up with something challenging and interesting, something that would test my skills and add some new ones.
These chairs were, at first, an exercise in understanding grain direction: Respect the grain! I also wanted to try my hand at various joinery. Now, I know, not everyone is lucky enough to have a slot mortiser (it's just something I happened upon when searching my local craigslist). I won't say "you could easily do X, Y, and Z", but you definitely could come up with some other alternative methods to achieve the same thing. In fact, I think sandwiching some plywood and using a jigsaw to cut out the outline of this would be even more effective and beautiful. However, I wanted to keep it a classical exercise in woodworking.
An eBay purchase of a sewing machine and I was ready to try something I've never done before to finish off the seats. My stitching sucks, but when they fail here, it will just be another reason to try again. Any advice would be much appreciated!
In all honesty, I hate the arms. I wish I had just done a wooden solution. But for now, they work as they are. Something else you all to come up with for version 2.0.
And from the bottom of my heart, thanks for sticking with me. I know the content is slow lately, but I promise I'm CONSTANTLY working on stuff, I just choose to only upload things that are up to the standards you've all come to expect.

Man these videos are so relaxing. I appreciate that you keep them without voiceover for the people just wanting to see you work, yet put all the info into the subtitles for those interested. It's a really good system and i wanted to compliment you on it.

I truly appreciate that! I try my best to not make filler projects and to show them off in a way that’s interesting and informative. Check the description in a few days and I’ll have a link to plans if you want the exact details to make this (or a simpler version) yourself!

@Measured Workshop oh you provide plans as well! I myself don't have half the tools you used for this, but that is awfully nice to hear still! Maybe i will try building some (much simpler) variation of what you made here, the way you fastened the fabric to the frame does look killer!

I know you said you hate the arm rests but in my opinion it’s the best feature. I’ve always wanted a patio chair where the arm rests come off easily so I can sit back and play guitar while around a fire. Every chair is uncomfortable for this but the reclined Adirondack style chair is the worst, which sucks because it’s the most comfortable chair for when I’m not playing guitar. You solved it! The perfect chair for playing guitar comfortably around a fire. One mans trash is another mans treasure.

Gorgeous! These remind me of campaign style furniture. Love the use of classic joinery but interesting angles. Also, it's clear you're a designer as well as a woodworker and this project really shows that off. Nice work!

That's nice and all but I give it about 6 months to a year in the sun here in AZ. All that fabric will deteriorate, but I do love the design. Fantastic build!

That’s my concern here in TX as well! I’ll try to find a spot under shade for them to live. Definitely consider it as a proof of concept, I think the design is pretty neat, but the choice of materials could use some consideration.

Love the chairs, but the area between the backrest and the legs looks pretty weak to me, also the wood grains is crossing the cut out section. Maybe without the cut "curve" will be stronger. Still, nice work!
