Excellent reaction, Ms. Britt! The original composer of this song, meant for it to be a romantic. Debby Boone, who was (and probably still is), a faithful Christian. sang this song, as a worship to God. I think your comparison of ONJ, to Debby Boone was a good one. They both were excellent singers, with great control of their voices. RIP ONJ.

Debby Boone's mother-in-law was the very popular songstress for decades, Rosemary Clooney. (She married George's 1st cousin.) She inherited Rosie's songbook and carries on her tradition. Debby's father, Pat Boone, was a great singer for decades, as well.

As it was written by the writer it was a love song as it was sung by Debbie Boone it was a spiritual song. We can argue all day whether it is or isn’t, but I think that causes us to miss the beauty of both aspects. Boone’s recording of “You Light Up My Life” was a platinum-selling smash success. Even though the song was intended as a love song, Boone interpreted “You Light Up My Life” as an inspirational song about God. Boone went on to release four top-10 Contemporary Christian albums while winning two more Grammys in the Christian music category in the early 1980s.

Back when this was new, this song had two ways you could look at it, in a romantic way or a religious one. To understand this you would have to know who she is, and who her dad is. Her dad, Pat Boone, was a straight-laced guy and very religious. Debbie was the same way,

Originally, it was not a gospel song. It was later adopted by the church community but had been out for quite some time on the charts by that time. I remember when people in local churches started singing it. Back then people weren't as thrilled with the idea of singing a "worldly songs" in Church.

This song was originally written as a songtrack for the movie of the same name. Debby Boone didn't sing it the movie. Kasey Cisyk did, and the actress lip synced just it. I didn't know who Kasey Cisyk was, but she had a great voice!

The song “You Light Up My Life” was originally written by Joseph Brooks and recorded by Kasey Cisyk for the soundtrack album of the 1977 film with the same title1. In the movie, the lead actress, Didi Conn, lip-synced to Kasey Cisyk’s version. Interestingly, the singing voice of Didi Conn was actually provided by Kvitka Cisyk, who also appears in the film as a bridesmaid

The writer of the song did it as as a regular love song. Debbie said in an interview after she performed it on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, that she was told by someone that no woman sounded like that unless she was singing to her Lord. Debbie stated thats exactly who she was singing to. I saw her performance that night. She was absolutely incandescent. It remains my favorite performance by her.

Hi Britt, well, I guess now I know why you haven't done any reactions to the biggest selling female recording artist of the 1970's and the the second biggest selling female recording artist of the 1980's. You just referred to her as "the lady from Grease". Wow, if that is the extent of your familiarity with her then you are missing out on a recording artist that was the biggest female pop star in the world between 1978 and 1984. She was also the first female recording artist to re-invent herself. She is such a versatile singer, from early country music, ballads, adult contemporary, soft country-pop, pop to go to more traditional pop, soft rock, rock music. In later decades she has done so many other types of genres. So versatile. Such an amazing human being that fought cancer for 3 decades and so beloved by so many of my generation. I hope you listen to some Olivia Newton-John. Anything from her live concert in 1982 would be amazing. You should start with "Sam" live from 1982. Or try any of her hits like "Magic", "A Little More Love", "Twist of Fate", "Let Me Be There", "Have You Never Been Mellow"...so many.

@@ednafenton7558 I understand that, you said it’s a love song TO Jesus, it’s not. The songwriter wrote it FOR a romantic movie. Listeners can interpret songs how they make us feel, but we can’t change what the writer intended. I know that Debby Boone said she was singing it to Jesus. You specifically said it’s a live song to Jesus and that if Britt listened close she would get that, so you were misleading her.

From an EW article in 2017: "10 weeks at the top of the charts and going on to win a Grammy, a Golden Globe, and, finally, an Oscar for Best Original Song. "I can't say how many weddings I've sung that song at," Boone says now, laughing. "I've had a lot of DJs over the years saying, 'I got so sick of playing that record.'"

It's Great But You REALLY Need To See "I, Who Have Nothing" Sung By Tom Jones On The Tom Jones Show 1970. I Was 12 Years Old And Watched His Show Every Week With My Family And This Is A Performance I Still Watch To This Day! PERFECTION !

This was a Huuuge song for a long time. Feels like a very gentle song. Debby Boone didn't have a string of hit mainstream records, I feel like her more wholesome style got swept away by edgier stuff. But she moved over to Christian Contemporary, and had success there as well.

Little known fact? That isn’t a fact at all It was not originally meant for the Carpenters. It wasn’t for Debby Boone either, it was for a movie. The movie was written, directed and produced by the same person that wrote this song for the soundtrack Joseph Brooks

Debbie and her family (Pat Boone is also a well known singer of his own right) are very religious and have a strong faith, so this song was meant as a religious hymn, however, it was the number one song for WEDDINGS a the time and it was our first dance at our wedding in 1979. Here are two of many songs from Pat Boone that I think you'll like. First one was a number one hit too ... called Love Letters in the Sand kzfaq.info/get/bejne/brNziLua2d7GhHU.html and the second one was also number one hit called Speedy Gonzalez (funny one) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ncWfaNOSud6tn6M.html
