Patrick Beverley Might Have A Point…

Patric Beverley called Chris Paul overrated, said he played defense with the intensity of an inanimate cone, and claimed to go out partying every night before CP3’s team came to town because he knew that Paul wasn’t a threat.
Beverley’s hatred of CP3 is well known.
It likely began when he was part of a trade that sent Paul to the powerhouse Rockets and Beverley to the rebuilding Clippers.
But is anything Beverley said actually true? Like stats-wise.
Does CP3 struggle against Patrick Beverly? Is he slowing down at this point in his career and we’re just afraid to say it?
Or is “Mr. 94 feet” just stirring the pot? Being a nuisance? And trying to reclaim the narrative of himself being the underrated, under appreciated, lockdown defender ?

Were the stats “vs CP3” when Pat Bev had Paul as his primary defender, or just against Paul’s team? I think that would be interesting to look into. And expand it to the stats all players on Beverly’s team had against Paul vs all other players on Paul’s team.

I wanted to do a deeper dive too but I need more time / help and this topic was fading. So It was player vs. team In my limited research Pat Bev didn't guard CP3 or Steph. It was Avery Bradley or a young guy. So not a super fair comparison but you can get an overall picture One thing I wanted to hash out is Pat Bev vs. CP3 in the last 3 season vs. the beginning of their career to see if CP3 is falling off or not. I think that stat would be the most telling.

@@HenryHoops I definitely understand that this is something that could be infinitely big. That’s really interesting that Pat Bev wasn’t guarding CP3 much. Sure, I guess it makes sense with Steph because he’s so quick and teams also have to switch so much against GSW. But I would’ve thought Beverly would be on Paul a bunch because of Paul’s smaller stature and Pat’s history of guarding PGs like Russ. I think an analysis Paul’s defense over his career would be a great way to really assess Paul’s current D. I was initially shocked with Pat Bev’s statements, but he didn’t say Paul was never a good defender, just now. But looking at DPM, oFG%, and other advanced defensive stats across Paul’s career (NO, LAC, and post-Clips) could really illustrate if/how much drop off there’s been.

If Patrick Beverley can't call him overrated, you can't call Patrick Beverley "journeyman" because you are not even an NBA player. If he thinks CP3 is overrated, it's his opinion. If you think PatBev is just a journeyman, it's your opinion. And I love CP3

oh no you're right! But...you don't even make NBA content so you can't share your opinion on it. I'm just playing you have a point. TBH i was a bit unfair to Pat Bev in this and should have dug deeper into CP3s last few years to see if he is really just a cone riding off his previous success.

@@HenryHoops I think is all fine when you talk about players because is just an opinion. The only thing I find unfair is when somebody talks about work ethics or mentality. You can be a bad player and that's OK. But if you call PatBev lazy or something like that, that would be unfair.

What's your definition of a journeyman? And on an NBA level how is that an insult? To me it says even though he hasn't found a home he's a solid role player and people want him. Where did you get he was belittling him from?

@@rebitedon you don't find home in the NBA. If you are good enough you go "This is my home". If you get traded or if you cant re-sign. You are journeyman, a guy who keeps going from team to team to see if he fits

@@Stemma3 i think ur definition is wrong and pretty illogical, but that's just my opinion. but look at NBA journeymen and u will find out there has been some solid journeymen out there. There has been a lot of journey men had pretty damn good careers. For instance, Jeff Green had a solid career and hes made an impact wherever he went. Just cuz u move from team to team doesn't mean ur a bad player. The NBA is a business and at the end of the day, sometimes teams just cant afford that player anymore.

It’s not about Beverley vs. CP3 individually. We all know CP3 and Steph are better than Bev. It’s about the public’s opinion of CP3 not being accurate and CP3 being overrated and a choker whose reputation is greater than his skill.

Once again, stats proven useless. Im not gonna dig deep into every game, but the suns-clippers series is wildly misinterpreted. Beverley was guarding either Booker or CP3 and the Suns were running 'whoever NOT on Bev' offense. The 2 scored on Bev a combined 5-6 points in that game 6. Seriously? You make arguments about bevs offense? Bringing up Luka again... Nobody is guarding Luka. Bev is too small for that. But in a same way, you dont see CP3, or Curry being his designated guard either. In fact you dont see them being the primary defender on ANY main scorers of their opponents. I just dont get it: how is a dude, who you say, cant defend, cant score and was almost always on a weaker team is having even a comparable record vs the Point God?

Yeah I agree with most of your criticism. I would honestly LOVE people like you to help destroy my opinions so that my arguments get exposed. Maybe I'll put together a discord. In the 2021 WCF Pat Bev almost never guarded CP3. His primary assignment was Dbook. Dbook averaged 25 5 and 4. Pat Bev has one of the worst Defensive Ratings on the team. and CP3 and Paul George had nearly identical Defensive and Usage ratings. Pat Bev did have comparable "Game Score" ratings as Jae Crowder which I would say puts him on par for the dude who is out there to play tough defense and knock down shots.
