Eighty-four million Americans had a mental disorder in 2022, while 34 million people had a substance use disorder. About 11 million people dealt with both, but many did not receive professional treatment, partially because of a persistent stigma leading to silence and shame around mental health problems. Michelle Miller reports on how former congressman Patrick J. Kennedy and author Stephen Fried are hoping to make change with their new book.
"CBS Saturday Morning" co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts. Watch "CBS Saturday Morning" at 7 a.m. ET on CBS and 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

No one listens to me when I try to tell people when I am struggling. I feel like I am different from other people. I have isolated myself and I would rather do that than be hurt or misunderstood.

So very sorry and am sending you caring thoughts with compassion from afar. ❤️‍🩹🙏🏾🌺 You’re absolutely correct, “people sadly don’t care” it’s also so very much more than just simply; “Praying About It” 😑😐😑

It's not stigma. If you are rich and don't have to work, you can spend all the time you want in therapy and get the right treatment. If you have to work all day every day to pay your bills, it's hard to find the time and money to treat the illness. If you fall behind at work, you will likely get fired. If you do lose your job, saying you were let go due to all the therapy for mental illness will not impress employers.

The fact that you bring up how employers view people with mental health challenges points to stigma.

Employers only care about their bottom line, they have no tolerance for anything that could pull you away from full-time work. Mental illness is not unique in that aspect

lack of compassion and communication with those suffering with mental illness is definitely lacking in my community. It can make those suffering with mental illness WISH they had cancer because there IS more support for them. My opinion from my own experience. Thanks for the video

It’s generally agreed upon by historians that JFK did not write “Profiles in Courage” but rather the book was authored by Kennedy friend and speechwriter Ted Sorensen.

Fully 1/4 of Americans suffer from a mental illness and yet people like to ignore the need for helping our fellow citizens. On the extreme end are the many who live on the streets because they are unable to hold a job or to obtain medications. // I believe it is WRONG to stigmatize anyone who deals with the daily challenges of a mental illness. When we know that we have problems like this we need to fix them. No one should suffer when we have the means to act with compassion and wisdom. Anything less than that is unacceptable.

Illnesses shouldn't have stigmas. We should demand more from our governments to put money 💰 towards research. I applaud those who come forward.

The Kennedy genes are super strong, its like I was looking at his Uncle JFK's forehead and eyes most of the time. I can understand the darkness he's going through, that family has suffered some real tragedies in this country. Two brothers being assassinated, one of their sons dying in a plane crash with his wife. Didn't a family member also die in a skiing accident? Also, forgot about the brother that died in World War II. And the most recent one the worm that died tragically from eating RFK Jrs brain. That entire family should find the nearest salt water and wash off all those curses.

He is not obligated to go against his Political Beliefs (nor his Conscience) just because RFK is Family. RFK’S first wife suffered from mental illness. Didn’t stop him from having their marriage annulled (after several years, and Children) so he could wed another. (1st wife eventually hanged herself). So. All of our “heroes” have feet of clay. js

@@joiisler3012 He doesn't have to go against his beliefs but they don't need to disparage him either. As you know, RFK has not responded in kind. Instead he has said how much he loves his family. He's taken the high road. If I had disparaged one of my siblings that way, my mother would be very disappointed.

@@enigma4649 RFK has made some pretty “far out” claims. The family (and Every Voter) is allowed to voice their opinions on same. If he wins, he will be Their President, too. By then it will be too late to speak out. (For example, no one Forced Him to tell us about the Worms calcifying in his brain; as Medical Records are Private.) His candidacy makes him Fair Game to All. Al is fair in Love, War, and Politics. (And None of his family has said that they do not Love Him.)

@@enigma4649 Wtf is your problem? First, you disparage his family for not supporting him unconditionally.
