Who Do You Think You Are?

Күн бұрын

Patrick follows his Father's footsteps and heads to Northern France where he has arranged to meet historian Tim Lynch to find out more information about a period in Alfreds life that he didn't reveal in his war stories.
In 2007, Sir Patrick Stewart played Macbeth in the West End. Dressed in military fatigues and carrying an AK47, he stared in the mirror and came face to face with the past. "I realised that looking right back at me was my father and it was shocking." He realised he'd been channelling his father for years.
It was a profound revelation not just because the actor's father was a military man, but because Alfred Stewart was violent towards Patrick's mother, Gladys. "Sometimes we had to call an ambulance," says Patrick of his Yorkshire childhood. Yet Alfred was also a "good raconteur" who told spellbinding "adventure stories" of his Second World War service. Patrick wants to reconcile these sides of Alfred's character.

My uncle went MIA in France. He was captured by the Nazis and imprisoned. He was near death when liberated by the Allies. He spent six months at Walter Reed Hospital, but when he was released and made it home to his family, he was still emaciated. His family saw him approaching from a distance but no one recognized him except my mother-she recognized him by his gait. He never recounted his experiences with the exception of one, which he was never able to finish. He would tell of a barn with children hiding in the loft. The barn was set on fire by the Nazis. He would break down crying and could not complete the story.

I found my grandfather was the same. He talked "around" the war (mess hall stories, buddies) but never about the actual warfare. Too much terror I think. He saw action in Italy. He was invited to go back as a veteran but declined. Too many painful memories I think.

4 of my uncles fought in WWII. At family gatherings, they'd sit quietly in the front room/parlor with their cigars/pipes and coffee. They never talked about the hard stuff, except obliquely. I was the only one who listened, but most of the time, I don't think they remembered I was there.

It was considered critical by Churchill that the British be seen resisting the German military onslaught. This was Lance Corporal Stewart's fate sealed.

The irony being that the Anglo-French were trying stop a repeat of the Von Schlieffen plan moving as fast as possible to the Dyle line, betting on the Maginot and Ardennes to stop any German move in their flank. We can talk what we want, want the fight was over before it began, as the BEF decided to evacuate. Of course the Battle of France would continue.

The map shown @ 1:27 couldn't be more wrong. The Ardennes is the area between the south tip of The Netherlands and the northern part of Luxemburg.

@@haddockpaddock9462 I'm absolutely sure. Just look at a regular map. I live 150 km north of the Ardennes. It starts at Liege but doesn't stretch all the way to the french border.

"Stuka dive bombers" is redundant. "Stuka" is a contraction of the German word for dive bomber.

It's not polite for me to use the Language I want to use for the Belgians and the French. Self centered, children of dogs, is the polite way. For some odd reason, last year I got on a World War II "beginning part" jag, while exercising on the machines at my health club during the coldest part of the winter (otherwise running and biking for exercise). The machines all have KZfaq/Internet. If the Belgians had LET THE FRENCH IN about 3 months before the Germans were invaded, the result of the whole war would have been different. If the French, didn't have the EGOTISTICAL, "Mini-Emperor syndrome" leaders in the high command (Trust me, Patton and Montgomery were real COMMANDERS, and LEADERS...despite their own "egos", and not afraid to be out in the THICK with their men) they could have STOPPED the Germans. AND, with some cooperation with the BEF, things could have been quite different. As noted, instead the Belgians turned and RAN.

To be fair, there was nothing they could have done. No single European army could have stopped the Germans at the time. They could have, at best, slowed the onslaught. I believe the plan was for the Belgians to retreat and regroup, which they eventually did. France was hindered by generals stuck in a WW1 mindset, because that was the experience they understood. The were ill-prepared and outgunned. There is little point in calling a group of people names 80 years after the fact.

I heard the Belgium royal family sold out their country to the Germans. Surrendered without a fight. Thank you for your explanation
