Proof that historical detail can be cinematically compelling. You don't need a swordsman to wildly flail about to show anger, you don't need gigantic swords and acrobatics.

Lol why complain about gigantic swords longswords were never ultra popular but they definitely were used mostly after 1360 but 70 percent of guys would walk around with an arming sword or side sword after 1450 when rings started to get added on the top than in 1480 we start to see the knuckle bow become commonly added for guys who didn’t want to wear gauntletss

It wasnt a double hit that did the fatal damage. His opponent trapped his blade with his long knife at the same moment as he thrust with his rapier (that particular style has a different name but I forget what its called) after binding the sword and also trapping it, hitting him in the right chest region, around the pec with his rapier (?) only. It was actually a brilliant simultaneous combination. By the breathing sounds they tried to make, it sounded like a pneumothorax or hemothorax injury in both, not to mention a hard slash injury to grey-hairs left arm and neck. Fatal in short order without the proper medical help, which at the time they had no way of knowing. There were no winners indeed. Dark hair had to do his duty. And his best friend lost his temper at insult from the adjutant and sealed his fate, one way, or the other. And of all, the biggest losers were those left behind. The family.

@@Maxranviir Also the fact that most of the monsters they hunt have about the same intelligence as an animal so a fighting style designed to confuse and disorient a monster wouldn't be great against a person without a Witchers advantages. Which would explain why he uses a reverse-grip so often. This short film portrayed fencing as tragic and not glorious. The adrenaline rush pushed me into worry. However, the most heartbreaking moment was at the end of the duel. SPOILER: While grasping at each other, they embraced as friends again. IMHO, this level of objectivity toward our valued subject (swordfights!) is unequaled among HEMA/reenactment teams.

The times of kings and lords was truly a terrifying age where you were basically fucked in every situation. If you were a peasant you were fucked for you would most likely die from starvation or sickness, or a victim of war. if you were a noble, you had to deal with the endless political drama game of people constantly trying to one up each other. Even being neutral was dangerous for it could lead to people make false assumptions about you. The moment his best friend pissed off the lord he was fucked. There is some historical records of people in similar situations who went through torture that would make the devil look merciful. , Being given the option of how to kill his friend was a mercy in itself.

@@user-jn2dw8ru1u Judging by the costumes, my impression is this should be sometime between say 1500 and 1550. (To be fair, the word "adjutant" used at 1:52, not just in the subtitles but also in the original Czech voiceover, by the letter-writer to describe the position of the man who was stabbed by the grey-haired duelist, would almost certainly not yet at that time have made it into Czech, as it is derived from the Spanish "ayudante" and had not yet even made it into French by 1671 - but that one word is just a minor anachronism, whereas clothes and material culture all fit the timeframe I mentioned.).
@marcinkotlarz7512
@marcinkotlarz7512 Жыл бұрын
Excellent reconstruction of the duel. Around 6:45 the black hair guy got a serious thrust to the chest. He must have felt he was mortally wounded because his mouth was filled with blood. As an gallant duelist, he wanted to keep fighting to return the blow, despite the tragedy of the whole situation of the duel with the friend. In general, after being a pierced with a rapier in a duel, you tried to take your opponent with you, wanting at least to be considered a winner after the death (and you hoped that God would forgive you despite of all).

I'm a historical reenactor and in my first steps in this activity I had the luck (and may I say the honour) to be trained by a good fencing master. Then I realized swords are maybe the first weapon designed especially against humans. They're not for hunting. And this realization brought a change in my choice of reenacting role. Many of the great people in reenactment choose warrior reconstruction and do it well (the men from Adorea being an eminent case of incredibly well-done work). For me, things went to the reconstruction of a priest. My first attempt was a late 13th century Franciscan friar. I slowly shifted to Late Antiquity, now trying to make my research for a Late 4th century Arian presbyter, learning the liturgy and some Greek, building the inventory. Warriors in pre-Modern and Early Modern societies had a relationship with priests, often a turbulent one but a relationship nonetheless. I'm just a man in love with history, not a real priest but I think it's in honour of these difficult human relations that we reenactors do what we do. And here I am, admiring the splendid work of Adorea and thinking of past voices silenced by swords. Thanks for another great short film! For this is not just a video, it's a film in its own right.

This was fantastic! My only minor criticism is that the filming did not allow the audience to see some of the action. I had to watch the sequence around 7.18 about 3 times before I worked out what really happened (as an old sport fencer and historical european swordsmanship fan): the two rapiers go corp a corp, but one guy still has the parrying dagger. He can't reach his opponents body but can thrust the dagger into his opponents sword hand. A fight ender.... But then he has already suffered a fatal thrust. He still needs to win the duel though for his son, his family and the future generations. Great stuff!
