Last summer I found a little single-shot 20 gauge shotgun that I thought my grandson would enjoy. I knew it had a full choke with 3 inch chamber, so I thought it could make a decent turkey gun for him. In this video I will be pattern testing a few different loads to see how well it can perform. Lets try it out!

I love single barrel shotguns!! Simple cheap in price and so easy to carry. I know some guys who have good luck with a 410 using tungsten for turkey. It’s all about the experience and fellowship. The smell of coffee, country ham and biscuits, the rumble of an old truck, the smell and quiet of the morning, the kindness and teaching of a good loving papaw…. Not to mention a good fire to fix your supper on to end the day. That’s the part of huntin that to me should never get outdated.

I've been thinking about getting a single shot just for the nostalgia of when I stated hunting with dad 60 years ago. Never forget the dove shoots, I got pretty fast at reloading!

The same thoughts came over me when I ran across the one in the video. Practical, reliable, simple, durable, and affordable. What's not to like about these old guns? If you really want one, I would suggest getting it. Life's too short to put off the things we cherish.

Love the videos you put out. There is one thing you have to think about with old guns, new ammo have higher pressure regardles of load. Some old guns will not handle the new high pressure ammo.

I have owned one of these for many years. Love it. I have it set up with an ATI stock, ammo carrier, light and sling. It makes a great little packable gun for wandering in the mountains.

I remember back in the 70's my younger brother was given this same shotgun, but back then, it was made by H&R. I was a young man then, and after fall small game hunting season and during winter deer season, I decided to test a 3 inch magnum #3 buckshot copper plated load in his gun. I set on a small dirt pile and fired at a target, and the recoil from that light weight shotgun and heavy magnum buckshot through the full choke rolled me over the dirt pile. MAN did it kick!

Another well done and informative video. After turkey hunting for 35 years with a 12 gauge and your old standby, the Federal Premium #5 copper plated shot, I switched to a 20 gauge CZ semiautomatic and the TSS loads. Last year I made another change, I bought the Stevens 301 single barrel made for turkey hunting in both .410 and 20 gauge. Equipped with factory extra full screw in chokes and camo furniture, they are good to go right out of the box. I installed red dot reflex sights and Indian Creek turkey chokes on both. I ended up carrying the 20 gauge last season, but have a goal set to harvest a gobbler with the .410. These gun are affordable, I got the 20 gauge NIB on GunBroker for $145 and the .410 for $195. As I get older, the light weight is a welcomed benefit. I don’t consider the single shot feature to be a handicap since I have taken approximately 30 gobblers with none requiring more than one shot. Good luck to you and Alex this Spring, I’m looking forward to seeing Alex with one on the ground with that little NEF 20 gauge.

Hi Wayne. If I can get that boy up in time we should have a good opening day. (you know this younger generation). Just this morning I went back there, and I heard several gobblers sounding off, and saw a few as well. I am pretty sure he can make the shot if he gets the chance.

As of a couple years ago, those little guns weren't available from H&R 1871. I surely hope they have started producing them and the Handi-Rifles again. At $100, you got a great deal. The gun looks to be in really good condition.

I wish there were an American ammo maker that would produce a superbly accurate rimfire like SK- (Lapua), Eley, or RWS. I guess CCI, is as close as it gets for now.

I've been reloading 20ga TSS loads for years with the same 1 5/8 oz payload of 9's. Mine run 1100 fps and absolutely hammer turkeys and yes...they do pack a punch on the other end. All the reloading data for TSS shot recommends using a Mylar wrap of .003 thickness inside the wad for added protection against barrel damage. You may want to open one of those shells to check if that company uses a Mylar wrap. Mylar also tightens up the patterns as an added benefit . I wouldn't reload TSS shot without it.

Thanks, that's some great advice. I have a friend that loads his own TSS shells as well. Lately I have been very impressed with 20 gauge turkey loads.

Good info again. Wondered about trying a 20 gauge this year but sounds like just about as much of kick as 12 gauge. I would guess from weighing a little less. Unless hunting a open area like a field usually 30 yards in the woods would be plenty. Thanks for the video

Check out the Stevens 301. I have two of these little guns, one 20 gauge and the other is a .410. In camo trim and extra full screw in chokes, they are set up especially for turkey hunting and TSS ammo. I bought both on GunBroker, one for $145 and the other for $195.

I watched the video on converting steel magazines for the 541 and 582 and was wondering if you have ever made them for someone who provided the steel magazines. I would like to have a couple of these steel magazines but I don't have the tools or talent to tackle such a project. Have you ever converted said magazines for someone if they provide the magazine and offered to pay for the labor for doing this?
