Gilbert plows through two strings all the time both directions. The left hand cleans it up and that is the real “secret”. Troy Grady called this “swiping”. I noticed with distortion bridge pick up it adds a percussive sound common to Gilbert’s aggressive sound. The neck pick up masks it a lot and makes the single note sound even cleaner… but he is usually hitting two strings when crossing

I agree, this video is misinformed. Anton Oparin also explained “swiping” too in his “revelation Paul Gilbert string changing explained” video at 10 mins 11 seconds. The index mutes the lower string whenever he up strokes, so he still gets a single note, allowing him to be more aggressive.

Paul Gilbert’s technique was not like this. Yes you are correct in tabbing his runs out, but his right hand cycle was a more contained motion without jumping very far outside for each rotation. The secret to keeping it this way was his left hand muting the lower string on his up strokes. He always plucked 2 but got 1 note with more emphasis.

awesome breakdown! after years of practice I can finally play a half-decent version of this riff hahaha but I ended up exactly at the stuff you're pointing out. Linear picking, double escape motion. There's no other way. You should do a breakdown of Sea of Lies by Symphony X. That riff is every guitarist's nightmare :) Great content!

I thought you were going to talk about how there are different versions of the arpeggio parts tabbed out and people are unsure which version to play.

Отличный урок! Спасибо Вам огромное! Все понятно даже без знания английского языка! Хочется больше таких уроков! Если можно показывать еще и левую руку, может в маленьком окне или последовательно!

3 notes per string ascending, you're going to have to change your escape orientation on every string - (Malmsteen would just economy pick that all) Although what you're demoing here matches the right technique for the job - playing around with this, it certainly a hell of a lot more accurate. Thank you.

Endless 3 notes per string? They most definitely are not endless. I thought this video would be about the arpeggio part not all this easy stuff. I’m sure if someone can’t play Scarified it’s not because of the intro part.

@@satchrules101look up the Anton Oparin video where he actually explains how Paul’s Hand rests consistently while the left hand does the muting. I know, it sounds crazy but trust me, it makes sense when you see it in use.

he assumes we dont know this shit already? the problem with this intro is not string hopping, angle and all that nonsense that many of us already have down, is the rhythm changes from the low E string that quickly changes to the faster lick, that's difficult for the LEFT HAND, the very beginning of the intro, that's the hardest of it all. I can play the other runs with ease. Not once in this damn video, he explained how to play that change from the low E-second fret to the 4 quick notes so it transitions nicely, the left hand is the problem, not the picking. I cannot play it at the original speed, the left-hand hold me back and that's the problem for 99% of people, this is why this video is garbage because it doesn't tell you how to improve the left hand, it doesn't matter if you have the picking down, if you left hand can't keep up with the changes and speed needed, what you can do is make an exercise out of the first run 4-5-7-4 and loop it, this is a very common exercise by paul gilbert, is just harder to play faster and cleaner on the low E string, the string is thicker the problem here for 99% is the left hand, not the picking. Both picking and fretting are harder on the low E.

Only thing garbage here is your entitled and insulting comment. The video doesn’t adress YOUR specific problem, so what? Go look for another instructional then. And by the way: if you would have spent any significant amount of time with guitar students, you would know that for stuff like this the picking is by far the number one thing holding back most of them. The only thing the video lacks in my opinion is giving Troy Grady proper credit for the fundamentals and the terminology used.
