Great interview Jason!! I saw Paul perform with Traci back in 2007 at the House of Blues in LA. A lot of my questions were answered regarding the history of LA Guns.

First time commenter, lonnnggg time watcher/ listener. This interview is far and away one of your best. Proof positive that not being a household name means nothing when it comes to an engaging story. So many intriguing twists and turns... Wonder what happened to the other members of Blackcherry & if any of their withheld material will be released? Paul never reaped what he sowed & people need to be held accountable, even today. I can't help but feel glad that Mars Black seemingly has it all together & life is pretty damn good out in the sticks!! Money isn't everything & doesn't define everything!

Great interview Jason, saw Paul in LA Guns and the Joneses(Stardust Ballroom/Street scene 85!!!) in another life, still have that flyer from 38.20 to this day and the LA Guns demo with Everything I Do, LAPD and Roll the DIce probably their best stuff, it was played on the KNAC local music show, took photos of them when they played the Roxy with GnR (who did two shows that night), he did some whip cracking thing from memory, Plain Jane with pre Warrant Jani were also playing, the dickhead roadie from Poison (one with the broken tooth) took the film out of my camera at the Country Club the next week 36 exposures n ruined it, but still have a full roll of photos of a pre famous Poison at a lunch gig at USC from 86 that they will probably never get to see.

Really good interview! Paul's story was illuminating to say the least. I saw him with Tracii years ago when they relinked and it just didn't work for me completely. I tried to give it a shot but the Phil vocal was all the LAG I knew to that point and it just didn't quite grab me by the... ears. 😁... As a guy who loves to write songs I feel particularly bad for Paul in that his craft and livelihood were stolen from him back then. In any case, I really dig Paul's down to earth personality and that he's telling his story in an objectively classy way given what happened. Because of the interview I went and checked out the new tracks on Amazon Prime Music and LOVE them. I'll be watching for the opportunity to pick up the album as soon as it drops. I'm also going to find my copy of Paul's LAG and give it another shot. Cheers, and thank you for doing what you do. 🤟

Another great interview, Jason. I remember the Hot Club in Philly that Paul mentions well. They didn’t card but every once in while it would get raided and half the place would get carded and hauled away. The drinking age was 18 then too!I was there for a one of those sweeps. Played there too but saw Richard Hell, The Contortions, The Bloodless Pharaohs( featuring pre Stray Cats Brian and Gary Setzer), Richard Lloyd,Pere Ubu among many others great shows. Good times. It was definitely a Philly version of CBGB’s.

Basically Traci Guns was determined to erase all of LA Guns’ punk/rock’n’roll DNA in his grasp for the brass ring. Morphing them into a crotch-metal band was short-sighted, and did for their career in 1991. The original LA Guns would have likely weathered the grunge storm better.

Wow, always heard they did Paul wrong, but didn't know it was this bad; it's even worse than what Gin Blossoms did to Doug Hopkins cause at least he got credit. When Paul talked about" one more reason to die" and suicide .. glad his story didn't turn out like Hopkins and he's doing good. I've meet people at LA Guns concerts that said the best ever LA Guns concert they attended was during that 2006-2008 time frame when Paul joined them. I really love the LAPD song, felt that should have been a big hit around the time of the riots. I really love hearing the history of LA Guns cause of all the different members being intertwined with all the big acts of that era.

Paul "Mars" Black was / is a member of... 1. The Mau-Maus (ex-Berlin Brats w / Rick Wilder, 1978-1983) 2. The Joneses (w / Jeff Drake, 1981-1994) 3. L.A. Guns (Version II Lineup 1985-1987, Formed 1983) 4. Black Cherry (Formed 1987-1993?) 5. Jo Dog & Paul Black's Sonic Boom (Formed in late 1990's) Robert Stoddard was a member of 1. The Robert Stoddard Band (1980-1982) 2. Dogs D'Amour (original lead vocalist & named the band circa, 1983) 3. On The Wire (w / Maurice Ross aka "Bam", original drummer in Dogs D'Amour, 1983-1984) 4. L.A. Guns (second guitarist w /Tracii Guns in L.A. Guns Version II, 1985-1987) 5. Robert Stoddard & The Last Band (1987) Robert Stoddard released a couple singles w / The Robert Stoddard Band in early 1980's & recorded a KILLER unreleased album entitled "Grapevine" circa 1987 with Robert Stoddard & The Last Band...

Fantastic stuff, Jason! Wow, Paul Mars Black's interview is one of the best yet in my opinion. I feel so bad for Paul. He got really got a raw deal by the guys in L.A. Guns. I am looking forward to hearing his new music and would have loved to hear Paul on those original L.A. Guns releases. The music industry is a lot like the Silicon Valley start up scene; lots of money men, lots of idea guys, lots of friends and associates who would turn on you in a New York Minute if opportunity rose. It's a shame as I can't think of anything more pure and meaningful to the human experience and spirit than music. Jason, great stuff as usual. I'd love to hear more from Paul someday.

PAUL Wrote SO many of the first album songs, and is why the LATER LA GUNS songs are not nearly as good. Paul IS THE REAL DEAL. I was living in Sacramento in 1987 and his band BLACK CHERRY played at a halloween party in Sacramento, opening for a band called 58 FURY (friends and ex band members of Tesla (CITY KID). They kicked ass and the songs were very well written. Too bad that Tracii missed the band's potential opportunities twice. He was in NY when LA GUNS should have become as BIG as GUNS N ROSES. Instead, GNR got the fame. Then Tracii fires Paul, who was not only a good singer, frontman, but a REALLY GOOD Songwriter. What a shame.

I also have to say LA Guns was one of the worst live bands I ever suffered through. GNR were supposed to open for Maiden at the Forum in 88, GNR didn’t show up, big surprise, LA Guns filled the hole, and they were just dreadful

Keeping up with the Joneses is the most irritating name in the world. And it's probably why the band failed because it reminds me of an old episode of George Jefferson

What’s funny is, while Jason is picking on lyrics from a gold album, I’d never heard of him. But I have heard of L.A. Guns and loved that album and saw the tour. Yet here we sit listening to him not only pick on, but piggyback on others success. You can tell Paul Rothenstien here is an absolute nightmare to work with. He sounds completely cocky and arrogant. Anyone with that much drama surrounding them has to be the common denominator.
