Scott Brady interviews Paul Marsh, legendary vehicle consultant and expedition leader. Paul prepares vehicles for continent-crossing expeditions, and has worked in mechanical support roles for major vintage car rallies, and overland trips like Driven to Extremes. Paul helped us with Expeditions 7 by preparing the VDJ78 for Antarctica. Paul's travels equally impressive, including multiple continental crossings. Our conversation includes Paul's overlanding principles, and the fundamentals of working as a team with your travel companions.

Success, like survival, is opportunity ( or situations arising) meeting preparedness. You guys have raised a critical point in overland travel. Be prepared, and be knowledgable. This allows for adaptability, further innovation, and enjoyment as well as survival. Being able to survive and thrive is the secret to accomplishment and happiness. This comes from someone who has travelled and worked in remote African locations having to think through situations and make a plan to survive and profit in the process. It never gets old... I can't wait for the next adventure being it an IoT installation in the deep Bush or a pleasure trip. They're all immensely enjoyable out in the remote African bush Compliments fom KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.

Your comment about changing a tire is so basic AND so important. I travel in a now 6+ year old, 65,000 mile Earthcruiser and do a 5 tire rotation every 5000 miles in my driveway at home. Why, I get to practice my skills and test my equipment. To that point my 42mm impact socket cracked when torquing my FUSO lugs (350 ft.lbs.), no problem, a quick trip to replace, if that happened on the trail I would be screwed. I now carry a spare. I am amused by other EC owners who ask me "Why do you do that yourself?" Thank you for the great work Scott, Paul is a treasure!

Paul helped equip our vehicle in 2001 and we credit him for our success in traveling from England to Cape Town.

Thanks for yet another great interview! I really like the idea of focusing not only on the preparation vehicle but also on the preparation and well-being of the humans in and around it. Regarding the benefits of slowing down, based on my background in physics, I think they're even greater than you're stating. The kinetic energy of your vehicle is proportional to the *square* of your speed, so if you're going 40% faster, the consequences in case of a crash might be approximately 100% more severe.
