Paul McCartney is headed here later this year for his fifth tour of Australia. The Beatles came here for the first time in 1964, provoking wild scenes in cities around the country.
This time McCartney is introducing a piece of technological magic into his performance, singing on stage with John Lennon. He speaks to 7.30’s Sarah Ferguson.

Interviewers are journalists, often trying to get headlines for clout, or due to pressure from employers chasing ratings and clicks. Unless there's dirt they think they can dig for, most interviewers do tend to act with greater. Remember as with most professions, they mostly only act poorly in response to market forces, and apart from that generally they're doing what they grew up dreaming of doing right. Look at interviews with celebrities who don't have much controversy or gossip surrounding them, generally there's no agenda to be had, so most interviewers are respectful do their job well.

Listening to Paul is like knowing everything will be okay. He still has that child's gleam in his smile. Sarah; what an incredible interviewer you are. You never interrupted him once. Now, that is professional journalism. And did you notice that because of that, Paul would continue on and you could tell he was really enjoying the complete interview/conversation.

Thanks 7.30 for this interview with Sir Paul. I’ll be 70 this year. The first time I heard The Beatles something happened musically to me. Bought a Gibson acoustic and played it day and night. Finally after getting married I got a job at Ovation Guitars in 1977. In 79 or 80 I carved up 4-5 necks for Paul. Pro musicians have many guitars but I’m sure when Paul played Yesterday on an Ovation I had a small part in it. Retired after 35 years of guitar building.

That was a fantastic interview. A big part of that was she let him talk and didn't interrupt at all. So often Macca is in the middle of a story and he gets hurried up or interrupted or whatever. There was none of this and the interview was 100% better for it.

Instead of the usual stock questions answered with the usual stock answers, she pulls a little something extra out this time. It's on the very top of my bucket list. I'm 70 yrs old, and sadly have never been to a Beatles concert or a concert with any of the four, alone. So, I'm praying that Sir Paul will come to Tampa for one last concert. I'm so afraid he'll retire and won't make it. I adore the Beatles. I feel like so many others who have replied here. They were everything while growing up in the 60s. And, they still are. They are all I listen to. God bless The Beatles!

I was lucky enough to see all four of them as a teen in 1966...and seeing is about all you could do..as hearing them was very difficult with all the screaming. But a great memory, and also their last tour, so I was very fortunate!

71 year old who has followed and loved his music for 60 years plus now, but only had one chance to see him in concert, and that was the "My Brave Face" tour in the late 1980's in Cleveland Ohio, at the old Municipal Stadium which has now been torn down and rebuilt as a football only venue. Even if he ever got to my neck of the woods, I just wouldn't be able to afford to go. All the musical pop stars that I have followed over the years have all out priced themselves for what I can afford. One of my favorite pop song writers that is still affordable is watch live in a venue is Jimmy Webb. Who does small cabaret venues, and the prices are very reasonable. Even another favorite of mine Billy Joel is now out of reach price range for me now. In fact the last time I saw Billy was in a basketball arena and the sound was so loud and piercing to my ears it was just unenjoyable.

Paul has been with us for some time, and never really damaged our faith in him as a musician/singer, but more importantly never as a person. Get real, Paul's team decide what's asked in advance and this is minutely orchestrated. They still need to sell tickets you know. These concerts rake in nearly a Billion dollars, so get real its a business and Paul is the richest musician for a reason. He's very smart. Love is great but money makes the world go round.

@@yoya4766get real Paul is 81 and has got more money than he knows what to do with to the point it’s meaningless . Unless his team is running him he’s got to be doing it for the love of it! He was let of the leash to say what he wanted and you could see he was becoming genuinely emotional towards the end. Referencing his late mother whistling many years ago really got to him and he was struggling to keep his shit together from then on in. I might be naive but I don’t think so and that’s how I read it.

Every word out of Paul’s mouth is perfect. Extraordinary eloquence. I was 9 years old when I became a fan. Then, still 9 years old, I saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show. I appreciate your comment. There are so many Paul haters out there who can’t wait to spew their garbage, either about this guy being a fake who replaced the “real” Paul in 1966 or that he’s an egomaniac trying to rewrite Beatles history to portray himself as more important than he was - all of which is complete nonsense. This is the greatest songwriter the world has known and despite his incredible talent and accomplishments, he remains humble and down-to-earth. Over time, he’s come to accept that he and his fellow Beatles were exceptional. How could you be Paul McCartney and not have some realization that you’re pretty damn good? I think he has a healthy self-image and is quick to credit other people who contributed, some much more than others, obviously.

I adore Paul McCartney. He’s a very talented and fascinating man who’s lived a VERY scrutinized life for over 60 years. How he’s managed to remain relatively sane is beyond me. For so many years he was compared unfairly to John and had his massive talents openly diminished by people who don’t have a third as much talent. Paul was rarely allowed to be a feeling human, if he got annoyed or defensive about anything then he got attacked or dismissed or labeled as a jerk. If he’s not completely 100% full of humility at every waking moment if his life then he’s labeled “arrogant” by idiots who are far less humble. He’s expected to give himself to the world and he does so-graciously-but if he’s not perfect then he’s just a “greedy” had been. I can’t imagine putting up with the shit this man has put up with and coming out of it in tact. He’s not perfect, of course not, but he’s an amazing complex human and he’s still here. We should enjoy him while we can because someday he and Ringo will join their other two brothers.

He's also had his share of BIG losses and heartache--his mom passing at such a young age, John, George, Linda, & friends all passing, The Beatles career ending, all the Beatles painful legal stuff, divorce, having to rebuild his Wings career from scratch...ALL of those are such hard and painful life episodes let alone having to go through them in the public eye. I can't imagine that part and yet, his attitude and gratitude is amazing. He's a special human on top of his immense talent, that is for sure!

For my wife's birthday last year, I took her to see Sir Paul in Orlando, and I'm tell'in you, the 'ole fellow ROCKED the hell out of that stadium. Stadium was packed, and the price of tickets was affordable, even for and 'ole fellow like me ! Thank you Paul, for making it a great night, (it was MAGIC) and for hook'n up with those three other teenagers all those yrs. ago !

Right...just finished watching the whole interview....this will last forever! Paul is so humble and honest, the recollections he has are incredible. The music this band have created in their relatively short time together will be here for a very long time because it touches the soul! I am 65 years old and was exposed to the Beatles music along with very many other bands during the period, thanks to Parents, brothers and sisters who also loved music, but the music of the Beatles .......and others, will be with me forever. Paul is probably my favorite artist of all time because he was one of the most innovative bass players (got me into bass), one of the best songwriters EVER, and one of the best male vocalists EVER. Rather disappointing though to see how after all that in the book, he goes out of his way to keep lying here, saying "this is the same guy as the guy in 1964", without even being prompted. Then goes on how he knew George from the school bus...but the most shocking was how he said that he does not know how to write and read music. That just blew me away...after the memoirs, then such statements that were not even prompted. Very sad that he keeps lying so easily, like it means nothing, when he could so easily have not made such statements.

He’s right about the warmth being palpable. The O2 in London Dec 2011 - He walked onstage alone to total silence, just his footsteps on the floor, You could hear a pin drop and the AUDIENCE sucked their breath in - then a wave of pure love swept round the building. Paul said either “ Hello” or “ Good Evening” and then everyone stood up and gave him a standing ovation that went on and on - and all BEFORE the show began. It was incredibly moving.
