The thing is, we do not know Morphy's ceiling. He was so often so dominant that he generally didn't put a lot of effort in games and usually played non optimum moves which were more likely to give him a quicker win. But on the very few occasions he was somewhat tested we saw a different Morphy, a positional behemoth who waited and went on creating marginal advantages until the opponent just didn't have a move. So Morphy could play in that style if he needed to and it's highly probable that a very strong opponent like Steinitz or Lasker would have motivated, almost forced him to adapt his style to a more solid and accurate one. We'll never know sadly.

In my opinion Morphy won't face much problems against Steinitz because his biggest rival around his time was Adolf Anderssen whom he destroyed 7-2. The head to head record of Steinitz and Anderssen is 12-11 in favour of Steinitz. You aren't posing any problems to Morphy if you can't even have a decent record against his biggest rival who got destroyed by him. Lasker vs Morphy is a more interesting matchup.

He could have been magnus, we are talking about true, pure, unfiltered genius to differentiate yourself by hundreds of elo points to anyone in the world. Without the luxury of all the training books, theory, computers, nothing, he learned something off pure genius, hundreds of elo points into the realm of the unknown beyond what anyone else could do. Had he had the formalities of today, to add to his pure genius, he would easily stomp on most of today's GMs. We are talking 2400 before anyone else even hit 2100. Hikaru is underestimating Morphy, putting him on a modern IM (Levy?) lvl. Morphy played 20 guys blindfolded simultaneously and didn't lose a game. You think Levy can do that? I don't think Hikaru can do it. Morphy liked open lines and tactics and attacking chess which is not how it is played today because most players are scared of the open board (greater chance of making a mistake). @georgebrantley776

Hikaru can undoubtedly do it. Levy, if he prepped hard for it, probably could if the time control is generous. At around IM level blindfold or not simply makes no major difference. @@georgebrantley776 Dude try memorizing 20 positions at the same time. Playing blindfolded decreases your average rating and playing strength because you have to concentrate on recreating the board. Playing simultaneously vs 20 opponents also decreases your playing strength because you have to juggle between 20 games. Unless Levy was cheating he would lose track and lose most of his games if he played blindfolded vs 20 opponents. Kasparov lost a game to a 2000 player in a simultaneous exhibition. But if you transported Morphy to today he’d quickly soak in enough opening theory to skyrocket up, but his very first game in the present day if you give him no studying beforehand, I think Hikaru is right that a lower level GM would beat him. @Maia Geia Magnus is nowhere close to as dominant as Morphy was. Magnus still loses tournaments, he has often struggled in WC matches (2016, 2018). Morphy had a career record of 164 wins 25 losses and 17 draws overall and 42 wins 8 losses and 9 draws in serious games. This sort of dominance is almost unrivalled in chess, maybe Philidor was close but his chess wasn't as accurate as Morphy's. Because naturally the skill gap increases immensely by the time the game is around for a long period of time. Like someone brought up basketball and wilt for example. Yes he was dominant and put up ridiculous numbers but his completion was very lackluster so of course he would dominate them. He was ahead of the game as was the person Hikaru is talking about but the game now and the players has evolved into something that it wasn’t at their respective times. Magnus wipes the floor with him if we had a time machine. But again, that ain’t his fault. He was ahead of the competition and was the best of his era by a very large margin. Nothing we can do about the eras we’re born in.
