I think the answer is “Clive Woodward”, coupled with a very good NZ side that was reinvigorated by Graham Henry after John Mitchell’s toxic coaching style.

Good point ... I think players go off form or fall away from their best faster in rugby union than almost any other sport . The Ireland team in this years world cup were a good example A year before the WC Ireland looked like they had a chance yet by the time it came around too many players were past it and the team looked a pale shadow of the team just a year before

@@rducko89 True, but both of those Lions teams performed better than the 2005 crop; both managed at least 1 test win, and both gelled better on the pitch, making for some genuinely competitive matches. The 2005 team were wiped off in every test, struggled to draw against a scratch Argentine team and lost to the Maori in the warm ups. This series was really where the Woodward mystique of 2002-3 was dispelled; he was shown up as a distinctly average, managerial, corporate-minded coach and has never guided another rugby side since, whatever post-hence justifications he's offered over the years. Graham Henry, in contrast, has subsequently admitted that he was in way over his head with the Lions in 2001, yet his team still won the first test against the reigning world champions, and contested the remaining matches credibly. No such humility from Woodward or his sycophants in the UK press, clearly.

The New Zealand side of 2005 were just exquisite to say the least. A young Dan Carter, Richie McCaw, Tana Umaga etc were running circles around the British & Irish Lions. It wasn’t that the Lions were a bad side. They were very strong but the All Blacks were just unplayable that series.

You've got to acknowledge that the big difference between the Lions and any National squad, is the difficulty in getting some genuine team comradery in a few short games. The 2005 NZ team were truly superb. They had moved the game forward significantly in the two years post World Cup. I respect what Clive Woodward wanted to do- he was there to take the Lions forward and make them better- it’s just it didn’t work out and the learn was for there to be an acceptance of the limitations of time on an 8 week tour or (whatever it is). 2009 was far better in that respect and the Lions performed with great credit. Can’t believe how well Jonny Wilkinson functioned in 2005 when you consider the hell he went though from 2003 with injury and knowing his mental state (from his autobiography)- he tried so hard. Would have been special to see him and Carter playing 10 in two really closely matched teams!

Personally, I don’t think it’s as simple as saying that the Lions lost simply because of how good NZ, and notably Dan Carter, were. Yes they were on fire, with a great coaching set up too, but the Lions got so much wrong on that Test series, that they were not only beaten, but absolutely smashed. And quite easily too. I remember watching it and I never once felt that they could be competitive with NZ. Even for a team as good as NZ were back then, with those star names like Carter, Rockocoko, Sivivatu, Umaga, McCaw etc etc, the Lions still had some world class talent to compete. Hearing stories about things like taking virtually two separate squads - midweek and test - pretty much isolated half the group already. Ian McGeechan was pretty much head coach of the midweek side, and they did everything separately - even made them travel to the mid week game venues with the Test squad staying behind. That’s not a united party at all. Also, the whole thing about players not even doing things as simple as room sharing. You’d be locked away on your own - no one to chat to or get to know - in what they described as ‘professionalism’. I think POC nails it here when he describes the more ‘old school’ approach of bonding over something as simple as a few beers does the world of good. Ultimately, it would’ve been a huge task to have beaten that NZ side, and I doubt they’d have won the series at all. Even if the Lions were at their best they may not have. But I think the biggest disappointment was that they weren’t even competitive across all three Tests. That and the fact that I think Woodward was guilty of taking some 2003 RWC winners based on reputation rather than form. Some of those players in 2005 weren’t the players they were in 2003. Those 2005 Lions, and the talent they could have utilised, were definitely good enough to at least be competitive and make NZ at least work harder for it.

One of the things that went wrong was the insane pen POC gave away at a rick when the Lions were 10-0 up in the second test right under the NZ posts with a three man overlap beckoning, the ball coming out and another seven points guaranteed. Probably still wouldn't have won game but coming back from 17-0 might have made the kiwis edgy. people always tend to forget!

Clive worked wonders with the 03 England team but he wasn't the right kind of coach to take on the task of coaching the lions-his expertise was building a team up over a sustained period, experimenting throughout and generally messing around to find that perfect combination...which it took him seven years to do. I think that's partly why England struggled so much after the world cup-he lost Wilkinson, Back and Johnson which seriously disrupted his gameplay and nearly half the squad were over 30; they were injury prone and much less reliable.
@jlm4455

Wonders? He nearly wasted the greatest crop of talent English rugby had ever seen. That team was loaded. Woodward saw that team collapse in 6N GS deciders again, again and again. They squeaked by an ok Australia team, barely. 4 years later with much the same team, older nowhere near as talented, England made the WC final. A pack full of leaders and world class talent. A superb defensive & kicking 10. Maybe the best we'll ever see. A superb center combo. A fullback/wing in Jason Robinson that could turn a game in an instant. That England team should've won 4-5 GS and 2 WCs. They underachieved because the man at the helm? Was grossly overrated.

Compare that against the 2013 tour against a comparatively weak Australia when many combinations of players would have got the job done and you have your answer. 2017 tour drawn in NZ was a far greater a achievement than the 2-1 victory in 2013. But that 2017 NZ outfit wasn't a patch on the 2005 team and results bear me out.

Obviously, its all water under the bridge now. But I think that NZ side was always going to beat The Lions. They (NZ) had several players who were at the peak of their game. Unfortunately for them, they couldn't maintain that brilliance against France in 2007 who had pretty much worked them out.
@EvKrusty
@EvKrusty 4 жыл бұрын
i encourage you to watch that 2007 QF again. The All Blacks completely dominated the second half of that game. Whilst the French defence was indeed magnificent, its clear Wayne Barnes enabled France to win that game with his steadfast refusal to penalise the French for any number of infringements from high shots, to hands in the ruck, to offside , to leaving feet at ruck to kill the ball. People question why NZ never went for a drop goal, my guess would be that the French were cheating so blatantly they expected a penalty to come sooner or later if they kept doing what they were doing...alas it never arrived. By the time they realised the penalty wasn't coming the pressure/panic overwhelmed them and they blew it. 40 mins of rugby under immense pressure and not pne penalty conceded? gimme a break. And thats not too mention the horrific forward pass that proved the difference on the scoreboard
@JSL2000
@JSL2000 4 жыл бұрын
@@EvKrusty That's quite a defence of the 2007 defeat! All very true. France got the breaks that night. But fast forward to 2011. Remember France's missed penalty? That came from a scrum infringement.The All Blacks pack knew that they had to foul then. If they didn't, the French were within definite kicking range and it was all over. Even another metre and would have been a definite french score. Very cynical play which France can rightfully feel very aggrieved over. France were also blatantly robbed in 1995 semi final against South Africa. How exactly that referee (Derek Bevan) felt that the French didn't ground the ball when the player had the ball and his entire pack drove him over the line. I suppose the point I am making it that rugby is littered with "But what about when..." moments when analysing past defeats.

O’Mahoney is someone I hadn’t considered - I’ve always seen him as a good, solid grafter - maybe inspires by his actions... my issue is he always looks pissed off and I don’t think that helps with referees. If you watch Reid or Warburton, they charm the ref, smile, give ground and accept penalties out of the danger zone and then make their cases more forcefully when points or yellow cards are at stake. AWJ has that same demeanour.

Difficult to ignore the fact that England had just won the RWC, so an English-heavy squad would have made sense

@@ianstewart9487 2 years before the lions tour. Because as I keep hearing the players who are performing now should be getting picked not the past.. something thankfully gatland tends to ignore all the opions all the arm chair rugby managers give him and he sticks to methods.which is usually a good mix of players who have the temperament for big games and usually the big game players

@@ianstewart9487 just because the whole team were in the final doesnt mean they were all able to deal and perform on the day and having watched it recently on some replay on tv not every player performed,consistency comes into it to.. for me the players that stood up on that day were players like Greenwood,dawson and Robinson for example some of the other players were ok but nothing great.thats were you pick other players to improve and you always look to improve that's were that team failed.i mean honestly that time when Shane William's was dropped for ugo monje!? Honestly, Shane William's always stood up in the big games and scored there were not many big games shane Williams didnt score in.. .. that's why In a lions team I don't think you could ever not have a Jonathan davies at centre in the team he always has stood up when its mattered playing for the lions..you know what I'm getting at? Even though people will be pushing for Hogg at fullback me included,quality player you can never disregard leigh halfpenny he to has performed in the big matches for the lions..these are just examples of the top of my head and what I'm trying to explain what I mean

Clive Woodward believing he is the be all and end all of coaching.Why would you take Alistair Campbell on a lions tour! Woodward is the same now.He believes everyone should listen to him now as a pundit.Large lack of personality and humility.

This is true, however, you missed a key point: team. Woodward wanted to construct a team using data & PR (that anthem what a joke). Geech & Gatland constructed teams using good coaching & man management. In 97 Geech got a ton of criticism for playing Townsend at 10. Yet within the squad, his coaching & management left players like JGus no doubt who the 10 should be. In 05 Woodward selected an out of form and recovering from injury JW.

@@jlm4455 I just think the England players were at the end of the road by 2003 and the Celts weren't really up to much at that time. Esp after O'Driscoll went off injured. That NZ side had some all time greats of the game just coming into their prime. I know its British culture to find a scapegoat and that's usually the coach. Look at the football team. But in this case, you cant question Clive's pedigree. Did he get 1 or 2 judgement calls wrong? Sure. But the cattle wasnt great either.

I think it's a bit more complicated than that, in that it wasn't just a loss for the Lions - it was a disaster

@@Biglight127 I just think the English players were pretty much over the hill by 2003, and that ABs team had Carter and McCaw coming into their peak. Going down 3-0 against that AB side really wasn't a surprise.

Greenwood looks 70, despite his dyed hair. They lost because none of these should've been anywhere near the Lions jersey: Graham Rowntree, Matt Stevens, Julian White, John Hayes, Gordon Bulloch, Shane Byrne, Andy Titterrell, Danny Grewcock, Martin Corry, Michael Owen, Simon Easterby, Jason White, Malcolm O'Kelly, Simon Taylor, Denis Hickey, Shane Horgan, Ollie Smith, Charlie Hodgson, Gareth Cooper, Chris Cusiter, Brent Cockbain. And overrated Clive Woodward fluked the 03 World Cup by happening to be coach during a time when England's generation of players peaked for all time, and they were off the boil by 05.

At that time it was almost impossible for any side to beat the All Blacks they were the best side in the world , they always got the benefit of the doubt with the referees, they got away with murder on the pitch because the touch judges TMO and referees were worried they 'd make the wrong call against them . Anyone thinking im talking crap watch the 2005 second test again , the All Blacks were taking men out off the ball twice the kicker chaser was shouldered out chasing the ball , they were always on the wrong side at the ruck you can see it was deliberate sealing off the ball and not rolling away. Not once was any cards given out , IMO they also played in a South African style and tried to put as many of the opposition in hospital as they could Brian O driscoll comes to mind again No touch judges or TMO , that tour IMO stunk like a fish market , New Zealand were going to win at all costs.
