this wasn't a joke, it was deadly serious, the laughter is because it was shown on another show, it's God damn awful even with plenty of background singers

In all fairness, he was on Pebble Mill promoting a play he was in at the time, where he played a washed-up club singer, and this was one of the songs from the play, so he's performing the song in character. So yes, it's cringeworthy, but it's intentionally so.
@dunebasher19714 ай бұрын
@@antster1983 No, he wasn't promoting a play. This is confirmed by the fact that the entire performance, plus his interview afterwards with Sarah Greene, can be seen on YT. He was promoting a rock'n'roll tour with Mike Holoway, it was all done in total earnest. We're intended to take his performance completely seriously.

+Clive Ellis Pebble Mill only had a small live audience. I would say that this was taken from a programme looking back at bad tv. with its own audience laughter.
@nightw4tchman6 жыл бұрын
Probably added from a show like Shooting Stars.
@reddevil95546 жыл бұрын
I think this was originally from a comedy musical called. Hold Tight, It's 60's Night. It was a mix of mostly serious and excellent song covers with some comedy versions. It was a good show and should have lasted longer and toured nationally for years. I saw it in the early 90s at Oldham Coliseum. Everyone who was in it sang at some point. Some are natural singers, some aren't. It had a basic plot and comedy structure, but was really just a way to sing all those old songs on stage again. Compared to the likes of Lloyd Webber musicals which always become more successful than they deserve, Hold Tight, It's 60's Night, was much better in full and was much more fun.

It's from one of those TV Hell retrospective type programmes, so the laughter is added later.

Paul Shane sang several numbers decently enough in the series "Hi de Hi,, in which he played the holiday camp comedian who finished his act with a song - in the manner of the day. If this performance wasn't intended to be funny, it certainly does look like an under-rehearsed job, perhaps a reflection of "Pebble Mill at One" having a low budget and hastily filling a vacant slot.
