See for yourself by watching the full clip and hear his thoughts ;-) What he says indeed demonstrates to me that brother Paul is an open-minded man who doesn't just automatically follow tradition. He truly desires to be biblical and to stay true to his own conscience. And I would likely have a similar view to the one he articulated in the video. We are to live a miraculous life, empowered by the Holy Spirit daily. And there are so many mysteries in the world today therefore be careful not to limit God. Can there be exceptions regarding miracles and wonders? Perhaps.
The Cessationism/Continuationism debate is a tough one. Great arguments on both sides. Let us pray for wisdom and discernment and diligently search the Scriptures while bringing everything back to the glory and gospel of Christ.

This is actually a video, not merely a picture. Paul Washer has trained himself to give a sermon while stonefaced staring daggers into one particular audience member's soul. Incredible.

I don't think you understand the triune Godhead. When Jesus left the disciples he said he will send the Holy Spirit and he will show them all things. With the Holy Spirit, they could never share the gospel with people who spoke a different language in other countries or do miracles. In fact, the bible says we can never understand the gospel without him first revealing you of your sin. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God 1 Cor 1:18, “And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.” Acts 5:32. “In Him, you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13-14. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.” Romans 8:14-17. “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.” John 15:26. .....and on and on the scripture talks about us needing the Holy Spirit.

I am so glad that I grew up in a home and church where all the gifts of the Holy Spirit operated. Since my early childhood I heard and saw it manifested, and I saw the positive results. I read in Paul's letters to the Corinthian church, and I see that there are times when somebody speaks in a tongue, and someone else gives the interpretation. In my Dad's church in Windhoek in my teens (late 1950's to 1961) , there was a humble, simple lady who was a very dedicated prayer warrior. The gift of tongues frequently operated through her. One Sunday morning there was an Italian gentleman visiting us, but few people knew that his mother tongue was Italian. After the sermon the lady referred to above spoke in tongues, and when she finished one of the gentlemen stood up and gave the interpretation. After church the visitor said to the person whose guest he was: "That lady spoke Italian fluently, and the gentlemen gave a perfect translation". Bur neither of them could understand or speak Italian. There is an excellent book called "They speak with Other Tongues" (by John Sherrill, a sceptical journalist who was contracted by a consortium of news media to investigate and proof to be false, the speaking in tongues by the Charismatic people). In the book he describes his investigations and how he ultimately accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour, was baptized in the Holy Spirit and experienced the speaking in/with other tongues himself which enabled him to conclude the book from an "inside" perspective. The book was first published in 1964 and updated a number of times. The latest E-copy is available at Amazon Books. One of the testimonies in Sherrill's book that I remember was that of a Jewish rabbi who was visiting the US, where he attended a church service of a charismatic group. At the conclusion of the sermon an invitation was given for people who needed prayer to come forward. This was totally strange to this rabbi but he felt a very strong desire to go forward, and as he stood there in front of the pulpit, a stranger came and stood behind him, laying his hands on the rabbi's shoulders and started talking to him in fluent Hebrew. Not only that, but he addressed him with "You, Rabbi so&so (using his full name and surname), son of Rabbi that&that (quoting his father's names) ... and went on to give him a very detailed message that he needed to hear then. After the message was delivered, he turned around and thanked the man in Hebrew, wanting to know how he knew his and his father's names, only to find out that the man did not know his and his father's names, and could not speak one word in Hebrew, he said he was just "praying in tongues". During 1974, long before cellphones were known in our country(South Africa) I was suddenly, late one afternoon, compelled by the Holy Spirit, to pray urgently; I immediately went down on my knees but found that I could not pray in my mother tongue, since a strong anointing of the Holy Spirit came over me, and for about 15 minutes I was glued to my knees while the unknown language just rolled over my lips. I was sufficiently educated in these matters (having been baptised in the Holy Spirit 15 years prior to this experience) to know that the Bible teaches that sometimes the Holy Spirit intercedes for us (through our prayers) and that He prays according to the perfect will of the Father, so I did not hold back, I just let it flow. About 15 minutes later it stopped abruptly and I could rise and joined my wife at the supper table. The next day we visited a very dear spiritual brother of mine, and we barely sat down, when he related to me the near-death experience he had the previous afternoon, a struggle for life when a small piece of bone he swallowed inadvertently during his meal, got stuck in his throat, causing his air pipe to choke. His wife could not get it out, and as it was after hours, she rushed him to the medical doctor's residence in the small mining town where they lived. There was no one home so she rushed him to the hospital about 3 km (about 1.85 miles) away. He said at that time he had to steady himself against the walls of the hospital passage, in order to stay on his feet, since he was beginning to lose consciousness. His wife shouted down the passage: "The doctor!!! Please, we need the doctor urgently!!!" and a nurse replied: "Madame, doctor is off duty, he's not here". Realising that God is now their only hope, she put her one hand on his shoulder (NB, she did not slap him behind his back) and called with a mixture of desperation and authority: "In Jesus' Name!!!" and the needle-sharp points of the piece of bone lost their grip, and the bone popped out of his throat like a marble that was spat out. When we compared "notes" we found that the time when his ordeal started and ended, checked 100% with the times that I was instructed to pray, and when I suddenly felt relief and stopped praying. Often I spend long periods of time praying in tongues, feeling spiritually uplifted and I am convinced that is what Paul referred to in his letter to the Corinthians: after teaching them how they should apply the gifts of tongues and interpretation in an orderly manner during their services, he said "I thank God that I pray more in tongues than any of you". I am confident that he did no boast about being used by the Spirit in the services more than anyone else, he was referring to long periods of praying in tongues during his private prayer time. I am not the only one in modern times who experience spiritual upliftment when praying in tongues, I've heard many testimonies in that regard. It is a powerful "tool" (with all due respect) available to us, and we will be depriving ourselves from many blessings if we say to God "No thank you Sir, I don't understand it and I don't think it is necessary for today" (as if we know better than the Holy Spirit Who wants to help us overcome).

I met an old Christian lady during a mission trip, who was raised and lived in a farm in Mexico all her life. Her and her family had very little education and only knew how to speak Spanish. She also didn't know how to read in English or Spanish. I heard her one night praying in her room in perfect English with no accent. He prayer moved me because it was all directed to God in praises and thanksgiving. I asked her later how she learned to speak English so well. She said she never learned..her prayer in English was her prayer language to God.

BeginningAndLast 7 I knew a man who was a church leader in Pakistan and at one time strongly argued for the cessationist view. He spoke several languages fluently, and was surprised one day at a church meeting to hear two uneducated women praising God in fluent Arabic. He understood them perfectly, but when he asked them how they knew Arabic, they replied that they were speaking in tongues. This changed his view on tongues and he became an advocate for the gifts of the Holy Spirit. He was a godly man and a humble servant of the Lord.

YuGiOhDuelChannel it is in the bible my friend that those who speak in tongues or pray tongues don't really understand what they are saying because if they do then they are not speaking in tongues at all but just praying in the language they have known no supernatural happening at all. And by faith also that's why we don't doubt because doubt is not from God and so is fear. God said in His word if we ask for a fish will He give us a serpent? If we ask something from God He can be trusted to give us Good because He is faithful for who He is. Godbless you in Jesus name amen.

Jesus saved me outside of church and I knew not what had happened to me. It was a mystery. I found it in the Bible that I'd been born again. Then He baptized me in the Holy Spirit and gave me the gift of tongues and others. Again I had to find it in the Bible not understanding what it was. That was 40 years ago. One of the words I often said was"yeshua". I would pronounce it emphasized like "YESH-ua" with the yesh being emphasized. We'd been married 14 years and doctors said we could not have children. Jesus promised us a son however and I was praying in tongues one day and He gave the interpretation saying my wife was pregnant. She was. She put our sons name in a baby book and he was born eight and a half months later. He's 36 now, a man of God. Jesus Christ the same yesterday today and forever. Never never let religion tell you what God doesn't do anymore. He's unchangeable.

You have created a logical fallacy. Scripture says "Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday - today - and forever". Jesus is always the same. You have changed the meaning into, "Jesus will always do the same things in the same way forever". Even a brief look at the Bible shows this to be false. For example, Hebrews 9-28 says, "so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him." The first time Jesus died for sin. When he comes again it will be to judge. Using your theology, we would conclude, "since Jesus never changes - when he comes he has to die again". This is obviously false. God is unchanging - but what he does often changes. Once God ruled his kingdom through the headship of one man, Adam - then he ruled through judges - then later he ruled through kings - then later through the Gentile powers of Babylon. Who God IS never changes. What God DOES often changes.

It happens when I praise and pray and God wants to. Not to be yelling at churches and showing off but between you and God. Peace !!! One more thing very important : Your salvation doesnt depend on speaking tongues. It depends on your repentance and accept Lord Jesus as your saviour and Lord and forsake sins ( praying and fighting ) to be close to God.

That is not the gospel my friend. The Bible says to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved ! No where does it say that daily repentance saves. That is discipleship, not salvation. Daily repentance & confession comes after being saved (born again). Salvation doesn’t depend upon your performance/works but the finished work of Christ. There’s 2 types of repentance: the one when a sinner repents (turn away from) unbelief and then the daily repentance (turning away from sin)that comes after being saved . Once you’re saved it’s a done deal(literally). You were bought ! You’re a slave to Christ whether you like it or not. If you were to walk away He’ll pursue you . There’s no running away from the Lord lol.

In pentecostal churches where the tongues are every believer's tea cup, they divide believers in 2 categories: those fulfilled by the spirit of which the tongues is the only sign of and then the rest. So there are 2 classes of believers there. As no one wants to be a be a b-class believer unbaptized by the spirit, they start to mimick speaking tongues. Then any kind of mumbling gibberish goes for a tongue for you are speaking mysteries in the spirit.

Timo Saksala I agree I think there are 2 extremes on this subject. They should both read 1 Corinthians 14 and pray for understanding. What Paul Washer taught here is false Paul the apostle teaches so. He also teaches how true tongues are. He gives an order to it talks about translation and who is being edified by it. Also tongues are a specific gift not a requirement. Everyone has their own gift. All we Need to know about tongues is in chapter 14 and it’s not confusing people should stop adding and subtracting from Gods word!

Twice he burst out laughing as the Holy Spirit must have said something very funny to him. Twice he looked away from me, shocked, as he sank down in his chair, looking as if l had addressed the deepest secrets of his heart. At the end of an hour he stood up, shook my hand, said to me in ENGLISH!!!, ''Best sermon l ever heard.'' Witnessed by half a dozen other believers. Yes, Mr Washer. Tongues for prayer and tongues for preaching are still here today. lt was after praying IN tongues that l entered into the flow of SPEAKING to someone in HIS TONGUE. The Holy Spirit is wonderful. When I went forward to receive the gift of tongues, I felt because of my own church's teaching that tongues ceased, or worse, were "the devil's babbling that will have you unknowingly curse God", I was very apprehensive. As I went forward, I specifically prayed "God, if this isn't of You, I don't wish to receive it. If it's your will, I gladly will." The lady who prayed for me first prayed against any interference by the devil. Then told me as she prayed for me, to just thank & praise God aloud for all He's done for me. It was a calm, quiet time of prayer...I thought how embarrassed the lady and my son who accompanied me would be when nothing happened: but all of a sudden a torrent of words came from my mouth, and no one more surprised than me. From that time I wanted more of the Word, to praise God more...it certainly wasn't of the devil. And as I said, I asked God to protect me from false teaching.

Sometimes tongues can be faked, but no one can convince me that this gift is not very real today! I don't believe God would give a gift without a reason...The best reason I can give, is that given the opportunity God may use this gift to share the Gospel with a person, or people who speak another language. Also, privately praying in tongues spiritually edifies a person while drawing them closer to God.

You’ve come too late to tell me speaking in tongues is not around today. I grew up around it from six years old, always went to church but never did it myself. After I was married, at 38 years old, I was praying alone in my house while my wife was out with family. I wasn’t seeking the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Rather, I was praising God after hearing the denial of the existence of God on Public Radio. I felt such remorse for hearing people trying to explain away his creation of all things with the lie of evolution. As I worshipped him with everything I had I began speaking in a language I didn’t know. It went on for some time and even as I was speaking, my mind was amazed as I could think detached from the words I was saying. I thought, “How amazing. Is this really happening? This is the infilling of the Holy Spirit!” After that night, I have done it many times. It makes me feel so clean and relieves my worries and fears. Please don’t discount it or fear it. Speaking in tongues is one of God’s greatest gifts and should be sought and experienced by every Christian.

As a young girl seeking God earnestly with tears and hunger I began to speak in tongues. To say that it is not for today is not true. There was a distinct time in my life of profound stress. I had prayed for weeks and the weight was still there. Then one night I started praying in tongues, I don't know what I said but immediately the weight lifted. How tragic that this gift from God is not encouraged in all Christian churches.

There are ancient civilizations that are gone with out a trace. Who is to say that what they spoke did not sound like jiberish? Paul said in 1 Cor 13:1 though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels.... It is not always an earthly language and once you have it God would not deliver you from it. Satan comes to steal kill and destroy. Just do this. Ask God to forgive you if you have been wrong. Then ask God this. I have always liked Paul Washer, this is one of those instances. I agree with him. However, a missionary friend of mine was given tongues as a missionary in a mountaintop unreached people group. He was conversing with the tribal leader and they were both speaking , but hearing each other in their own language. The community accepted Christ that day. Tongues/Languages do occur among those God is using for the spreading of the Gospel. Beyond that, I have serious doubt.

Paul Washer's interpretation really seems to provide clarity for me. Now, I'm willing to be proven wrong. But I have a Pentecostal a background and yet, lately, I'm trying to think as Biblically about this issue as possible. Recently, I've been listening to the Strange Fire conference on the GTY KZfaq channel. It's been quite a paradigm shift, because it's compelled me to reassess many things that I've just accepted. For example, I'm at somewhat of a loss as to how I should approach people whom I know are truly God-fearing Christians, but purport to speak in tongues in a way that no longer seems Biblical. What response do you typically get from people who dearly treasure the modern Charismatic version of tongues?
@realityhits3022
@realityhits3022 4 жыл бұрын
@@ethanhocking8229 i will reason with you. 1. Paul Washer believes tongues are a language that already existed and spoken by humans. He implies that tongues are a means to reach out to a people speaking a strange language. But no where in the bible was tongue ever used to preach the gospel. People like Paul Washer and Macarthur use Acts chapter 2 incident of the filling of the Holy Spirit to prove that tongues are a human language. They are clearly misinterpreting the scripture. But let us reason about this. The scripture in acts 2:6 says "Everyone heard them speak in his own language" and later in the following verses, the language they heard them speak were given. First mistake is to assume tongues is a “gift of languages” or “foreign languages” since in Acts 2 those who heard “them (plural)” speaking in their language heard all of those speaking in tongues in their own language. Acts does not say the believers from the upper room came out speaking a variety of human languages that they did not know. It says they spoke in “other” (heteros - another not of the same nature or class) languages as the Spirit enabled them. The miracle was in the fact that each member of the crowd heard it in their own personal dialect. They did not hear one or two speaking their homeland dialect, they heard “them all” speaking their own dialect. The result was the crowd said, “What does this mean?” (2:12) *2:6 “each one heard them speaking in his own language”* *2:8, “Then how is it that each of us hears them (“ekastos”) in his own native language”* *2:11**, “we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues.”* There were around 120 people gathered in the place( Acts 1:15). Imagine if all of them spoke in different human language, it would be very confusing to follow them to understand what each one is saying. There is no way for anyone around them to understand what they were saying. 2. There are two types of tongues: one that serves as a sign and benifits the unbelievers and one that unbelievers think is stupid. Is this scripture based? We will find out. 1 Cor 14:22 says tongues are a *sign* for the unbelievers. But in verse, 23 it says, if unbelievers hear us speak in tongues, they will think we are out of our mind. How is this being a sign for the unblievers. If the unbelievers think we are some crazy people, how will that make them believe in God? Then, is Paul contradicting himself? No. If someone speaks in public tongues( it comes either with interpretation or a foreign language ), it serves the purpose of being a sign for the unbelievers. In the case of unbelievers, it would be a foreign language or their local dialect. But if a person speaks in private tongues, the one mentioned in 1 Cor 14:2, then no one is going to understand him. The unbelievers will think he is out of his mind. I can keep on going. But i am late. I have to go to church. I hope you read my comment and respond me in kind. We can reason our differences. God bless

Kal El Okay. I appreciate your respectful tone, since I don’t always get that from people. So thank you. I don’t think you’re being altogether clear in what you’re saying about Acts 2. Were they speaking real languages, or not? Could the people understand them, or not? Are you trying suggest that all the foreigners there were given the gift of interpretation of tongues? If so, such a thing is not made clear in the text. The natural reading makes it clear that the foreign Jews there could each identify their own language being spoken. In fact, the text records them saying “we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God.” (Acts 2:11 NASB) Also, the text says that the disciples were speaking other tongues (plural): “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.” Acts 2:4 NASB) The Greek word for ‘tongues’ in this passage is ‘glossa’ which literally means ‘languages’. What could possibly be clearer than that? So to me, that’s very clear. I mean no offence in saying this, but spinning a text differently does not change what it means. It’s not the natural reading that follows. Just because you can reexplain something, doesn’t mean you are correct. As for 1 Corinthians 14, Pentecostals have misread it. I know this because I used to read it that way myself. The passage actually affirms the traditional understanding of Acts 2. “In the Law it is written, “BY MEN OF STRANGE TONGUES AND BY THE LIPS OF STRANGERS I WILL SPEAK TO THIS PEOPLE, AND EVEN SO THEY WILL NOT LISTEN TO ME,” says the Lord. So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe.” (1 Corinthians 14:21 - 14:22 NASB) So we see that the message was to the Jews to say that the Gospel was being made available to Gentiles who spoke foreign languages and therefore they, as the Jews, were going be missing out on what was originally intended for them. When they saw this sign taking place in Jerusalem, they should have gone to the Scriptures to find the meaning of the event. Finally, it would make no sense if the disciples were merely speaking gibberish and the Holy Spirit was somehow making it understandable to those outside. Why not just have them speaking ordinary Aramaic and then make it understandable to foreigners, if that’s what you’re trying to say?

@@ethanhocking8229 i am sorry for not articulating out my earlier arguments for speaking in tongues in such a way you could understand. I was in a hurry to type before leaving for church. Besides that i am not a native english speaker. Well, i will take my time to write them again in a better way and i will also respond to your argumemts. I will make it short as much as possible so that both of our time will be consumed less. 1. On the day of pentecost, after the disciples of Jesus were filled with the Holy Spirit, they spoke in tongues(or "glossa" in greek word). People around them coming from different nations heard them speak in their own dialects. The interesting part is, these people from different nations heard all of them and not two or three of them speaking in their own languages. That was the miracle. If each of the disciples were speaking different foreign languages, no one there would have been able to understand them. Because there were around 120 of them gathered( Acts 1:15). If all the 120 spoke different foreign language like you are assuming, it would be an indecipherable noise. In a simple way, the disciples filled with the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues at one time. And all people around them from different nations heard them speak in their own languages at the same time. This means the Holy Spirit was actually involved in making the listeners receive the tongues in their own languages. Also, the greek word for tongues ia glossa. But glossa is not just confined to human languages. In 1 Cor 13:1 apostle Paul wrote " Though i speak with tongues of men and of angel". The word "tongues" in the scripture is the same greek word glossa. Paul used the word glossa to kind of define angelic language in this verse. This proves that glossa applies both to earthly langauge as well as heavenly language. So arguments like glossa is human language that already existed is wrong. Next, you said "it would make no sense if the disciples were merely speaking gibberish and the Holy Spirit was somehow making it understandable to those outside". Of course, its a miracle and it will never make sense. I mean every miracles done by Jesus in the gospel didnt make sense. They are extraordinary and supernatural. 2. (Well, need to leave for dinner. I will be back to explain it. Btw pray for me to be able to articulate my ideas efficiently. God bless you.)

Kal El Let me just pose a few questions: Why doesn’t the Bible say that they were speaking Greek? Why does it say that they spoke with other tongues? Did you know that virtually everyone at that time spoke Greek anyway? Greek was the common language of the Roman Empire and a large part of Asia at that time. So it would not have been a miracle if they had only been speaking Greek. Are you assuming that it is impossible to hear someone shouting something out in a crowd if you are standing close enough? Do you realise that Paul was probably using a hyperbole in 1 Corinthians 13:1? Who says miracles don’t make sense? Do you think they are arbitrary and have no specific purpose? I really advise listening to the Strange Fire conference on KZfaq if you have not already done so. It cleared a lot of things up for me.

As a matter of full disclosure, I speak in tongues. First, let me say that I appreciated the non-hostile tone of the presentation. Too many Christians lack the decorum to allow for a loving dialogue. Second, let me point out one issue I had with the comment regarding tongues being a human language. 1Corinthians 14:2 refutes that often used argument against present-day tongues. It is clearly not a "missionary language tool." The Apostle Paul is quite clear "For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit." Another verse within the same chapter, verse 14 tells us that tongues is not just for use in the congregation, but is also useful in a believer's prayer life. Going back to verse 4, Paul reminds us that speaking in tongues can build up the beiever.

It was true for those it was given to ,and for the reason given . Most Pentecostals copy others and do not know what it is or what it was for. The reason was given by Paul when he quoted Isaiah 28 . Have you studied 1 Cor .14 v.20 -22 .v21 .' In the law it is written .with men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people .'This is a quote from Isaiah 21 .which says the sign is for the unbelieving leaders in Jerusalem . i.e. JEWS. That is why they started at Pentecost and was seen as a sign where Jews were found .This was translated in the churches so others would understand. The sign was God is now speaking in gentile languages not Hebrew as the gospel was going to the other nations ,that is why true tongues ceased as the church became gentile. The Bible says all believers are baptised into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit. This is the only Baptism mentioned. Anything else is fiction.

@Proverb 23v5 Sorry you lost your mother, it is a hard time to go through. There are 3 kinds of tongues ,first as I explained the miraculous ability to speak in languages other than Hebrew which was first heard at Pentecost .It was a sign gift and about what it was languages ,it marked the start of the world wide church age . It cannot be understood without reading Isaiah's prophecy .which Paul is quoting. It was translated for the Jews who were listening in the early church . The second kind is what it has always has been ,and still is practised by pagans. That is an emotional lack of self- control leading to speaking gibberish .This cannot be translated as it is not language . Any expert on forms of language can explain this.,as language has a pattern. If anyone claims to translate gibberish they are making up the message this is false prophecy ,as it is claiming to be a message from God when it is not . The third kind is a Satanic counterfeit which is also real languages unknown to the speaker, and still can be found among pagans today. This could be translated on your phone , (not gibberish ) A doctor I knew came across Pagan tongues in real languages while working in Africa ,in a trance an uneducated Pagan woman spoke in French and Latin ,which he could understand. When the church prayed for her she stopped .Never go by feelings ,I remember an unconverted Pentecostal telling me, when he left the church and admitted he was not a Christian he continued to speak gibberish 'tongues' when alone .I said if you know it is not real WHY? He said because it felt good he got a' high' from it.

It is rare to find any clarity on the topic of Biblical "tongues" found in the N.T. There seems to be huge resistance for most leadership to read the Bible and just teach what is found there. Let's start with a quote from Paul the Apostle; " I speak in tongues more than you all." evidently the implication is 1)Paul spoke in "tongues", 2) he could have spoken in"tongues" in public and private, 3) Paul gave specific teaching on how to handle each instance. For more detail just read the Bible.

When I have got saved in 1982 , I was 18. I attended a local church. One day I noticed some worshippers raising their hands and praying in another language. As someone who had no knowledge of the Christian life I found this quite perplexing. I remember walking to the front row of the church to Mavis who had led to me Christ, asking her to please explain this phenomenon. She and another minister led me to a side room and began to explain this from the Bible. I saw what they showed me and I said that if this is real then I want it. They said they can’t give it to me themselves but it is the work of the Holy Spirit. I said I absolutely believe the Word, so right there we just prayed a simple prayer and immediately I felt this moving within me moving up from what seems my middle and bubbling up and I just opened my mouth and this language just poured out - not some babbling - but clearly a concise language. I could not stop speaking it all day. I had this joy rushing through me that I had never experienced before. I was afraid to stop in case it went away. The next morning I woke up fearing it had gone - but again I opened my mouth and I simply continued speaking in tongues and today in 2018, I can still speak in tongues. Some people only look for experiences but I discovered a love for the gospel, I realised how contaminated my sinfulness is, how wonderful His grace is, I love doctrine -I don’t like modern happy clappy lightweight church. I speak in tongues for my edification in my prayer life. I am thankful to God for His great mercy towards me and I believe that He determined that I be baptised in His Spirit , speaking in tongues because of the huge battles I was going to face and I needed a clear and tangible comfort of His presence to carry me through. The question is: Is tongues for today? It is for me.

I was raised southern Baptist for 40+ years where tongues were in no way taught. Repented/trusted Jesus(saved) for 20 years now. Was baptized in the Spirit only 1 year ago. I’m 52 now. I respect/honor this passionate man of God, but I know 100% for sure that he is mistaken if he is preaching cessationism. I too believed like him for all those years until I asked God what is real. He showed me in a mighty way one night and forever changed my life. The prayer language (1Cor 14) is only a small part of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It includes operating in the gifts as well (1Cor 12). Plus much more, I am a witness to all of it. See Luke 3:16, Acts 11:16, etc. Can you receive this baptism? See Luke 11:13 , Acts 10:47, Acts 10:44 etc. Just remember no one person has it all correct, be humble, seek Him first. (Mat 6:33). The final authority is always Gods Word, never a mans. Humbly ask Him for wisdom and you will receive it. (James 1:5) I would love to share my testimony with anyone. Just let me know.

I agree with Paul Washer. I believe that tongues exist, even though they are often used wrongly today. My mother, a really biblical woman of the Lord, speaks out of her heart in tongues to the Lord when she is joyful at times. She also has beliefs aligning with true biblical theology (even reformed theology, in regard to repenting and believing and the fruits of our lives being evidence we have been saved). Scripture says that it's only good to speak in tongues in church with an interpreter for people to understand it, so I think that's where we fail sometimes in the Christian churches today. However, I cannot deny that this gift still exists. Many people seem to use it wrongly, but that does not mean that it doesn't still exist today. I hope you are blessed!

my story in short. Raised Pentecostal, parents wanted us kids to speak in tongues. We did but we wondered if it was real. We didn't want to fake it and it was a concern. Later in life I attended a evangelical church at night, where no one knew me, if felt freer there to raise my hands and do what ever I felt in worship. It was not my regular church. One night I was there and the worship was strong and I had my hands up and was very open. The minister said the Holy Spirit was there. I really wasn't listening too much. Then I felt a warm wind that almost pushed me back into my seat (I was standing) and speaking in tongues just came out of me, I had control but I didn't want to stop it. From then on I knew it was real I can't deny it. I don't know if it is a phonetic language as I don't understand it, or if it is just a way to get our mind out of the way so the Holy Spirit can pray for us, thru us spiritually, instead of mentally.

If you read all of chapter 14, you will see that tongues are for the edification of the church, the body, not a language that others must understand, verse 4,5,14,15 and 22. Verse 2 is an excellent one to meditate on. In verse 18, Paul thanks God that he prays in tongues more than any of them. I received the gift of tongues 47 years ago. Sharania sharania No they don't. They believe it was only so members of the early church could go to a strange country and lead them to Christ in their native tongue as the Spirit gives the utterance. Even though there is no Bible basis for this. They rejected the Pentacostal movement when started. Im sure the main reason is because they like to stand on this verse... John 10:28 “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” When they are faced with scrutiny about their unholy life, they will always say "but no man can take me out of God's hand" despite many verses that say man can choose to walk away from God through the continued sin he chooses to partake of. Just try to tell them getting drunk every Saturday night is wrong. They will say it imediatly through slurred words. When the Holy Ghost shows up sin must flee!

WONDERFUL! I could jump and down over this short clip. EXCELLENT and I see the same things in the local churches. Tongues have not ceased Biblically but what I see most of the time in churches and from leaders, they are not speaking a language. "Baa baa baa baa baa baa" is not a language but even some pastors walk around 'praying' like this. We don't have the gift to preach to sheep even though we are called sheep. Myself, I know its a language/ different languages. It's not repetitive. One pastor in Florida at my church was intently watching me in a prayer service. I opened my eyes and caught him staring at me and listening intently. He said, "That's Cheyenne" He had the lineage and knew the language himself. I can tell of other times, personal accounts I can testify about that 'tongues' is real and for today. We have fakers in the Body of Christ that babble to cover for their positions of power in the local church who are expected to speak in tongues but if they aren't filled with His Spirit, then something else is filling them. In that environment I see other blasphemy going on they explain away by twisting scripture to their benefit, that is, to perform to an audience, many of whom are laying on the carpet in the front of the church. When confronted, you become an enemy to the spirit leading them and they begin false accusations and false prophecies toward you. They have no victory when they get up off the floor. No chains broken. No healing testimony, and you'll never find anyone who had hands laid on them in prayer fainting and falling forward or backward or any other way. In Scripture, there are two cases of falling as dead men or fainting or unable to stand. Enemies of Christ and those who experienced a miraculous encounter with the King in His actual presence with a lifechanging cannon worthy testimony. The only thing that has ceased in much of the Body of Christ is following Him and obedience and you will suffer persecution from the world and religious types for doing it.

Paul was very clear on this when he walked into the Corinth church, all the women were lalalalalalalalala and he was like what are you people doin!!! He explained that if you are speaking with 'other' tongues.. you are speaking in another language, and there should be an interpreter ALWAYS present. Despite this, I remained skeptic so at one time, i prayed to the Holy Spirit to allow me to speak in French, Italian, Chinese and Japanese. He enabled me to speak and that made me realize that the gift is real. All you need to do is ask and pray from the Lord. I still have this gift (expressed in humility and I sometimes speak in tongues when I pray to God). I believe that the Lord gave me this gift for a reason, not just to prove His power, but to serve as a witness that God's same power demonstrated in the early believers is still at work in our generation and even much greater than what their generation had seen.

The test on whether the tongues you think is real or Spirit-led, as with anything we do, is Scripture. How would we know what the fruit is if we the Bible didn’t tell us (we would have impressions but wouldn’t know for sure); or if a gift is genuine if Scripture didn’t describe it or give guidelines. As we grow in the knowledge of the Word, we grow in our knowledge of God, His Spirit and His workings. I used to speak in unintelligible tongues confidently. After moving to a Pentecostal church in my late teens, I disdained the Baptist church I grew up in because of its stand on charismatic-type tongues and did so for decades, until I had to take a Sunday School class on the subject in the Charismatic church I worship in and the scriptures supporting the outline contradicted every thing that was said. I decided to spend time studying tongues in Scripture - not experiences or any teachings for and against it (I wanted to come to an objective scriptural conclusion) - and at the end of it, I found the Pentecostal church’s argument for tongues could not hold water. I stopped not because I lost my faith in the Holy Spirit’s gifts and manifestations - I very much believe He still gives the gift of human tongues which are unknown to the speaker the way he did in Acts 2 (note vv 6-11) but not unintelligible because the crowd in Acts 2 did understand them, and I am blessed and encouraged by all the testimonies in the comments section of people who have displayed the gift of tongues as the 120 did in Acts 2. By the way, I noted your username - you do realize that A.W. Tozer lived in a time when the Charismatic Movement and their teaching on tongues after the Azusa St. Revival had gained traction and acceptance in many circles, yet did not speak in tongues nor did he believe in the charismatic teaching on, or their practice of the gift (even though he believed in the baptism of the Holy Spirit). Speaking in tounges in I Corinthians = edification of the church (if there's no interpreter, better to it privately for self edification. . If there is an interpreter, the whole Church is edified.) I received the gift of tounges before I understood what the gift was all about. First time I experienced it, I felt that my tongue was moving on its own, I tried to cover my mounth because sounds started to come out. Then it become louder, so many words (non repetitive), but the only word I could understand was every time I was mentioning the name Jesus. I was aware of what was happening, but certainly it was not by my own volition. It was coming from within. Then my hand and arms felt like there were a cloud of static electricity surrounding them. And its the real speaking in toungues that Paul was talking about "enlighten the mind (He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself 1 Corinthians 14:4 AMPC But I do it according to the leading of the Holy Spirit, not when I want. Every time I follow Him like that my inner being will be edified. Especially when I'm in a severe battle I don't know what to do and don't see things clearly.. after praying like that the Holy Spirit will show me clearly what the devil is trying to do, what I can do and have pefect peace. There are countless times that praying in toungues led by the Spirit has taken me out of troubles when I don't know how to pray anymore. Other times He will give words and things to pray or explanation of Scriptures or answwr to what Im asking about, very clearly.. some other times He told me to quit pray in toungues and if I continue it will be just me .. not toungues anymore and its no use. There are false toungues too.. I think many people just babble to prove that they speak in toungues, when some of them even don't have the Holy Spirit.. but it doen't mean true toungues dont exist. For a long time I was troubled by those babbling people and doubt toungues.. but now no more. I experienced true toungues and also know that false toungues come from the devil. Paul said "Forbid not to speak in tongues". Tongues are a language straight to Almighty GOD and the devil can't hinder our prayers, because he doesn't know the language. You are filled with the Holy Ghost, separate from being babtized by the Holy Ghost. Babtized means you're a born again child of Almighty GOD through Jesus Christ our LORD. Filled means you desire and want more of God, to be used by Him, bringing in souls, blessings, healing and deliverance. The evidence of being filled is speaking in unknown tongues, but we saints must pray for the infilling every single day. We never lose God's language, but we must learn to stir the gift inside us to enact God's mighty power in Jesus name only.

My Christian son grew up in a baptist church, got baptized in a diff denom, and now prays in tongues. He prays in his "closet". He had seen ungodly, non-Christians, worldly Christians pray in tongues without interpretation (baptist background). His take on this; ask God for Wisdom and understanding. My take on it: Why the gift of speaking in tongues and NOT the gift of Healing? It is a lot easier to "look holier than thou" than to HEAL people. Matt 13:24-30 let God do the sorting. God Bless

One day I believed Jesus as the scriptures said, and was humbled by realising I'm a sinner. I asked Jesus for a drink, just a drink of His Living Water. The next thing that happened was that Jesus baptized me in my room with the Holy Spirit and rivers of living waters flowed from my belly, just as it is written! I spoke in tongues fluently; the flow of the language matched the overflow of the rivers flowing out of me, in a sense. I was also delivered from something that caused me to sin at the time. That was the first time I experienced the Power of the Holy Spirit. I will never forget this. I am yet to experience the kind of tongues that supernaturally allow me to speak another's language, but don't write of this heavenly language; I sure cannot, now that I've drunk from that Well.

I grew up Reformed Baptist. When I was 9, God spoke to me audibly in a heavenly language that I simultaneously knew what was said (I had the supernatural gift of "interpretation" of an unknown language) - I was still anti Tongues until 10 years later when through re-reading the Scriptures I realized what had actually happened to me. This explanation of tongues - he defines his theology by EXPERIENCE (lack thereof) and NOT out of a heart to "earnestly desire" spiritual gifts... Our experience should be guided by the Word, not the other way around. I was so theologically brainwashed even experiencing the supernatural I couldn't realize what was happening was 100% in God's Word (blindness to God's Word can leave you powerfully blind to Spiritual experiences). Tongues is clearly - when reading Acts and Paul together, not exclusively a phonetic human language, and it is for today (unless you cross out large sections of Scripture as "not profitable..."). Therefore our response should be as commanded in Scripture... earnestly desire spiritual gifts (including tongues)... especially Prophecy (hearing God's voice, for yourself and others).

So is that what we’re supposed to be looking for like New Age ‘we’re looking for experiences? Does everyone have to speak in tongues to prove to everyone else that they even have the Holy Ghost in them ‘like the Pentecostal faith believes?like let’s forget about love, joy ,peace, meekness, kindness ,temperance ,self-control as evidence ‘let’s only say tongues is the evidence that you even have the Holy Spirit, really?????

@@jameswells9749 Your response (1) has nothing to do with what I said (2) your response is FALSELY fabricates and addressing things completely disconnected from what I said. Are you that deranged that you need to fabricate (LIE) in order to respond to someone you disagree with? That's not something someone connected to the Holy Spirit would do. You have serious issues.

@@jameswells9749that's not what he's trying to say. He never said that gifts are the evidence of salvation. All he said was that we should seek for them not for vain glory but to edify ourselves and the rest of the body. In scripture we see that whenever God wants to move He finds human vessels to work through. So many times healing comes from God but through men. Asking God for gifts is asking God to use you. God bless.

The gift from the Holy Spirit of speaking in tongues, is alive and well. I have heard a language coming forth out of some ones longing to give praise, now that person speaks for hours in that language, not just a repeating word, but totally intricate phonetically formed sentences, conversation and verbal speaking for hours sometimes.

@@georgeroberts9111 Sadly you are wrong, you cannot argue with some ones experience. Why are you here if you do not want to learn the truth? I came to the Lord 42 years ago with the miraculous experience of praying in tongues. I met many Christians at that time who had the same experience, there are times when we fall, but none has ever turned their backs on Christ, but I know many supposed Christians who haven't had that experience who are now fallen away. I pray that God may reveal himself to you in that way!

1st Corinthians teaches us if there is no one to deify your words, Then your message is unfruitful. " I had rather speak five words that by my understanding I may teach someone , than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue." Paul Washer is a true blessing from God.
