49:00 is a set of home studio recordings in ilk of his Stereo/Mono and Come Feel Me Tremble albums. And as such it's rough around the edges. Which with Paul Westerberg is a very very good thing. He really is in his element and therefore, at his very very best

The summer this was released I had just returned home after living for five years in Papua, Indonesia and was about to move to Phoenix, a city I knew nothing about. I was anxious and out of place existentially, and nowhere felt like home. Then "48:00 of Your Life" was released (when I was in Minnesota, coincidentally), I immediately purchased it and burned it to CD, and I felt closer to home than in many years. Thanks for posting this. And thank you, Paul.

I’ve cancelled out a lot music the last few years until January 2020. Great to catch up with what Pauli’s been doing. Read that Spin interview. Let’s Not Belong Together is a great song from grandpa boy. I’m glad he acknowledged that. The I Don’t Cares record is great too as is this. Weekend listening will be all Paul.

The album comes as one long 49 minute MP3, and the songs tend to bleed into one another, even at times playing on top of each other. In the virtual "liner notes", Westerberg states for his fans that "This product is not faulty- All sounds are intentional and valid as a work of art". However, most of the songs are remarkable

It’s weird that Kurt talked about every punk, hardcore, indie pop, post-punk, etc. band he loved (exhaustedly), but I never saw him mention the Mats or Paul in any video interviews at the time. I have a theory that songwriters and bands like to keep their biggest influences secret to make them look like their “genius” is unique. They’ll also name adjacent bands like Husker Du or something close but not the big thing. I don’t know how much Mats or Paul I hear in Nirvana. That production makes it such a different thing than the Replacements

Sidenote: It breaks my heart that Paul's dad never went to see him play. I know that feeling, and it hurts. The song "My Dad" (from Folker) sounded utterly genuine to me, not unlike John Lennon's "God is a concept by which we measure our pain..." etc. I would've tried to work with him to polish the lyrics just a tiny bit, just to make the pieces fit together a little better (without losing the overall integrity of the piece) and then add some tasteful backing layers (color). Creativity becomes art when it takes shape and is fully actualized. Westerberg is a wonderfully creative person who bumps up against something artistic and then recoils before the thing ever comes together completely, as if he's terrified of creating a finished work. On the other hand, he might just be one of those kinetic types that can't be bothered with the drudgery of putting the finishing touches on anything (too boring perhaps?). I'll bet that he has notebooks full of half-finished songs still to come...

That's pretty insightful. It's hard to know if it's true but it's very insightful. I've certainly experienced that dynamic myself. But whatever his shortcomings he is, certainly, a great artist and maybe that is his mark...the unfinishedness of some of it. That's part of the tension we all feel as listeners I guess. Peace

Westerberg has a grand tradition of shooting himself in the foot so that he doesn't have to prove to anyone how fast he can run. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Chart Topper. However, w/ the scattershot 49:00, he is aware that his best efforts win the race everytime. An online poll taken concludes that people hit the mute at 31:25 to prevent ear infection due to off-key warbling from unknown female. Westerberg's self-hatred is still unmatched. In my understanding, this was released on iTunes as a single 48 minute, 5 second track at the price of a single track. There it was for all to have until the folks at Apple took a shit and removed it. It was another fine Westerberg moment ; being a punk and trying to piss someone off. Now if you want to listen to it, it's gonna be here. Perhaps one day he will re-release it, but I certainly won't be holding my breathe for that day to come.
