Paul Westerberg and band recorded live at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. on Sept. 12, 1996 in front of a small studio audience which reportedly included one Billie Joe Armstrong. This succinct 51 minute show is filled with lots of energy and great songs (including a cover of David Bowie's "John, I'm Only Dancing"). And, belying his reputation for sloppy performances, this is anything but! It's also a major improvement, soundwise, over other versions floating around the "internets"! So, grab a 6-pack, open a pack of smokes and enjoy Paul Westerberg as he rocks the house.

Damn my memory...I do remember it sounded great live on the radio that day...pretty sure it was a guy that worked at the record plant in Sausalito which is next to San Francisco who did the live KFOG performances fantasy Studio was in Berkeley and during this time they commonly did live broadcast...his name may have been Kent... unfortunately both the record plant and KFOG and Fantasy are now-defunct don't know anybody who could answer that question but yeah he was real good and a mentor to somebody I knew who worked at the plant as an intern during that time... and I actually remember the Green Day guys talking about this when I lived down the street from them and hung out at this place called Coffeehead on lower College ave in the Berkeley/Oakland/Rock ridge area

I was there in the audience! Billie Joe from Green Day and his wife were there as well…about 20 of us in total for a live KFOG show at Fantasy in Berkeley…amazing night!

Tommy Keene was the perfect foil for Westerberg. Two Alex Chilton devotees - no surprise the affinity was palpable. Keene was one of the great guitarists and songwriters. Miss you badly. After the show in Atlanta I thanked Westerberg for bringing Keene along. He grinned.

Apparently at 7:23, when Westerberg shouts out "you're late!", he was referring to Billie Joe Armstrong who watched the broadcast. Great band, but it was after the tour that Paul was tired of doing perfect renditions of Replacement songs.

Whoever's drumming is amazing. Heavy propulsion to keep the band going but staying in the groove so they don't start speeding up. Perfect balance.

That was a kille rshow. Was there as well. He did an appearance, similar to this, on WDRE 103.9. I was there for that too. He covered "Daydream Believer" and also "John"

Great upgrade on this old show I've owned for years. The energy is tops here. The Troubadour tape is also exceptional with more songs, but this has a different energy. Wonderful.

Only saw him once in Leeds in the UK early 90's absolutely fakkin ACE !!! Me mate took me along tbh I had not heard of him. He came on was a bit arsey but he soon warmred up and it was just outta this world. Bought every thing he has done since !!

I saw him on this tour and I was very glad to hear a geat performance and a great band with everybody playing on point and the p.a. sound was clear and not an overloaded mush like so many of the old mats shows. The drunk cover shows were fun but... I always liked the nights when they were cooking.

I have been a fan for decades now and he has influenced my guitar playing greatly and truly enjoying these live versions for the first time.........man, I'm even missing the nineties... Does Paul play those sweet guitar licks throughout all his songs or does he have his second guitarist play those parts? I know Paul is a badass guitar player, just haven't ever scene much live footy or blessed to have been to a show of his yet.

What ive seen when Westerberg has played live , he has a second guitairst (often it was Tommy Keene ) playing most of the leads ..... i think Westerberg is an exceptional rhythm guitairst more than a lead guitarist

He gets less respect because he is like the Ronnie Wood of Paul's career rather than the Brian or Taylor. But he has the right sound, right attitude, and chops. Paul was lucky to get him.
