It was a short very short hit because MTV had to pull it because parents were complaining that the video on TV was too sexually explicit for young viewers under 16 coming home from school and catching this when parents may not have been home !

oh MTV and the radio DJs have moved away from dance pop, and favored R&B and alternative rock. Raunchy pop was not hip any more and even Madonna and Janet struggled at the time. It was only in the late 90s when it had a rebirth younger generations (Robyn, Britney) came out with their first singles.

Her music career was really short-lived. She had already made a name for herself as a choreographer, but her musical career was seen as showing little growth as an artist. I don't agree cause Head Over Heels had a more R&B vibe than her previous albums, and she contributed more as a songwriter to the project. Everyone had moved on by 1995 from her music. Shame as I think this should have cracked the top 40 (peaked at #58) and she could make more music.

I love this song and video unfortunately kids were over her by the 1992 VMAs incident and she was gone for almost 3 years after. It had bad promotion and was pushed more for VH1 than MTV

Actually there was a real drastic shift in what was seen as "cool" and "in" at the time. The 90s were some unpredictable years and Paula got kind of screwed because of that. Bad luck

Comes down to Historical lived context. If one is time traveling on yt through music vids one doesnt get the full scope of the top 40 lineup. As someone mentioned she came out with this sound too late. Sorry i just really found your question interesting lol.

I agree, I LOVE this song, but It was her 2nd single off her 3rd album ( 1st single was " My Love Is For Real "), her 2nd album didn't do as well as expected and neither did her very first tour...if this is possible, it was just too much Paula in a very short amount of time...but she is still doing great, her net worth is $30 million even after she quit singing and being a choreographer...her being on American Idol was a very good thing for her...!!!

Unacceptable? To whom? To you, maybe. But most music critics agree that Head Over Heels is Paula's weakest album. I absolutely adore Paula, but I own this album and I do agree with the critics on this one. The first three tracks (all of which were released as singles) are the only songs on the entire album that I really enjoy. "If I Were Your Girl" showcases Paula's vocal chops, as do some of the other ballads on this record. But, overall, Head Over Heels is mainly comprised of song fillers that all sound essentially the same.

Produced by The Family Stand, who did most of Spellbound, so yeah it would have fit well!

That’s how you knew she was past her heyday when she got shifted to VH1. The MTV generation had gotten sick of her by 1995 so she got moved over to an older audience at VH1. I remember seeing a bunch of other MTV reject videos (by other artists) on VH-1 around the same time. They were either by pop artists past their prime or by strictly adult contemporary artists.
