I'm a DJ in the So Cal mountains. We play this song once a week. Why? Because it has real life soul and because Paula Cole is incredible. RD "The Growler".
@charlesgoodson57748 ай бұрын
At the time of this writing, the song is 26 years old, and it still bangs! Three instruments -- a voice, drums, and guitar... but such a full record. Proof positive that solid writing and strong performance are all you need. It's still one of the more unique recordings in the canon of contemporary pop!

That is very well said and I completely agree. Talent trumps flash any day of the week. Such a good cut of this song.

This shit is so good. I'm all about heavy metal. The heavier the better to me. Illegible lyrics are a requirement mostly. However...this is a diff level. This is talent i cant comprehend. Its so fucking well done. In this live version I can hear the guitar notes way better and they bring such sadness to me . its bothering me. This song is depressing me. Its powerful enough to distort my brain to thinking im sad. I am envyous of whoever wrote those notes as well. Its so simple yet, id have NEVER been able to even write that . so much here.

I lived in Idaho when this song came out in the 1990's. Amazing song then and it is still amazing. To hear Paula belt this out on stage in an intimate setting is truly amazing. She has not lost any of her conviction of when she wrote this song one night.

I have adored Paula Cole since her Peter Gabriel days. It is wonderful to know she has still been recording/performing. It is also wonderful to see her develop a beauty which is not commercial but absolutely natural, growing into a woman's body. Thank you for posting this.

Exact opposite for me. This song came out when I had been married 12 years. The first 10 years, I worked 2 sometimes three jobs, all so hubby could have a new car every few years, never missed a happy hour or lunch! I even paid his car insurance. No children. He had a side chick at work, and went to London with her. There is still resentment. But, I love this song, puts all my 'feelings' in one place. Hubby pretty much still hates this song... Tough.

sloanhadley Kind of silly since the woman in the song is pining for tradition. But traditional gender roles aren’t allowed in the current year.

Alex NutCasio I don’t think you understood. I didn’t literally mean they’re not allowed. But the growing and vocal far-left is lobbying hard against them.

We just don't see talent like this, today. When she appeared with this song in the 90's I immediately spotted her as a true talent in terms of composition and voice delivery. Unfortunately, I started losing my hearing and dropped out of the music industry out of necessity. It was good to see her here, some years later.

This is the very essence of art. The expectations and contrast between ideals and reality ... the inevitable changes faced by both men and women through years of the "human condition" ... all that suppressed disappointment, anger and pain in one 4 minute 41 second piece of music. I just don't know how Paula can still sing this song with so much emotion, and finish with a smile on her face. Whenever I hear it, it's like a punch to the gut.
