In this video I am explaining how Jimi Hendrix and John Mayer play chords on the basis of a song. A beautiful way of making chords sound super awesome, and to 'spice em up a bit!

I love this tutorial, for good reasons: you don't spend an eternity describing every single detail which would make the video too long, but you explain enough for me, not experienced in guitar, to understand. I've looked for tutorials of this song, but it's always either way too long or too short and rushed. This is just the right amount of explaining. Thank you for this!

It’s called modal interchange; there are some videos on it out there on KZfaq. If you have some prior music theory knowledge I would suggest this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z8qCdJVpyMrYZZc.html If not, I would suggest the link I’m going to put in the next comment. It would definitely be cool to see him do a video on this though!
@iamtheshaker

Thanks for the input! I forgot that it was called modal interchange, and I actually had that video already favorited! Interestingly enough, one of the examples is a bVII. I definitely would like to hear Paul's thoughts though, because when JM does it (or JH) it doesn't sound jazzy, and the only theoretical examples tend towards jazz

G is a flat 7 and C# is a major 3rd so it all works in the key of A. tensions are a great way to spice up your playing, like 9, 11’s, and 13’s, if that’s what you mean by “Out of key chords”

Wow. Learning this was a massive light bulb moment for me. I've always had a decent grasp on chords and basic scales, but this is what linked then together for me. I watched this video along with a lot of your other videos but didn't really understand a lot of the concepts, so I ended up after a few recommendations watching Stichmethod's various playlists which are great for understanding how scales link to chords and can be used musically and now I actually understand what's going on in most of your videos. Incredible work Paul.

Paul you made this back in 2017 and there were 500 comments so..this one is no doubt lost. Still..your without a doubt the best at thinking and instructing about musicality while always reminding us that there is theory that you CAN understand to make you smarter and better. This would be a really accessible way to get started with Axis. Just like with learning a language you need to get confidence not to block yourself from getting to the next phrase to stay in the conversation. You have given the essence of the glisants and inversions ect. that are the trademark of Jimi that he of course had heard Curtis Mayfield and others doing. I know your doing an amalgam of Mayer and Jimi here as well. Still it's hard to really drop into the land of Jimi without the creative freedom afforded by the use of the thumb. Jimi was indeed well endowed as we know and not everyone can have the size he had to allow them the freedom it gave him. Sorry..but there are about 4 moments in this song that you can't get without the challenge of dropping your thumb over. So I would recommend use Pauls video as a jumping off point here, take his points about musical theory. Then look for a video that takes this to the next level and you will see that a the thumb can "give life giving riffs taken for granted" or something like that..We are all bold as love!
