So far I only have one of the 5 up. kzfaq.infoUgkxOXxsTZ3ptV_Pk0fFl8bNZvVqeoqBQFwe My son ran out of time, with motion detector etc. I have it over my garage door. It works great. Have seen a couple of cats, my dogs, when I am out front. And had a bee buzzing around right in front of it. It works very well. It even shows the neighbour's driveway, but only shows movement just past my own, which is very long. I highly recommend them.

I'm constantly impressed by the number of things the products you've reviewed lately can do. This week we have a camera/door sensor combination that handles a tricky privacy issue. (Last week, it was a camera that also acted as a ZigBee hub.) I'm really liking that some manufacturers are getting into that "why not?" territory where things aren't simply laser-focused on a small set of functions. I also like the fact that these things don't just have extraneous features, but extra features that make sense and add to the legitimate use-cases of the products. On Baby Paul: Having been through this myself with my own child (with somewhat different specifics), I'm thinking forward to that date when Paul, the younger, will join the ranks of school children, only to quickly find out that _no_one_ understands pelvic thrusts to chants of "Home Assistant" and eventually eliciting that dreaded note home asking, "What in the world is this 'zig bee' that your child keeps mentioning on the playground?" Just be ready when some person asks with a jaundiced eye, "So this oddness is basically your fault?" to happily respond, "Why yes, it is." (You'll get points if you say it before your wife does.) Back to the subject at hand: Your reviews are amazingly complete (e.g.: the "Home Assistant" integration issue. I needed to know that.) Thanks again and I'll remember to give it a "thumbs up" this time.

While the chances of being hacked are low, there's a greater chance the Mrs or gf will throw the camera out of the window if she thinks it will record her walking around in her undies. From that angle the privacy shutter is useful. But then again, if burglars sneak in during the day or night, you really do want the camera to record everything 24x7.

but then you'd need some that is robbing your house to stop to hack to it (providing they can, but they cant) plsu you'll have other cameras outside right? the bigger flaw is a robber will just hide their face
@JustTheJames
@JustTheJames 2 жыл бұрын
@@nefariou5 That's not what I'm getting at here. Paul is using his experience with his cameras being hacked to try and market the privacy shutter as a selling point to protect the user's privacy. The issue is that the privacy shutter is controlled by the same means as the rest of the camera, meaning that if the camera is hacked, the privacy shutter does absolutely nothing

Hey Paul. It appears that the complex actions from the contact sensor such as left open, exit, and enter are not supported as Alexa Routine triggers. I can only see them in the SwitchBot automation and IFTTT applets. I have been using IFTTT with the Alexa Skill IFTTTrigger to get Alexa Routines triggered on these SwitchBot actions. Maybe you can convince switchBot to add this Alexa support

Hi Paul. A question for you. Family member has asked about the most secure \ sensible way to add a camera or two so they can monitor their disabled husband while out of the house, check on carers activities etc. Obviously this needs to be secure as its very private stuff (no Chinese servers and lots of personal details needed) and can not overly complicated. Requirements are pretty simple - monitor whats going on with a live view, record option for ongoing and motion so some footage can be stored if needed and can be turned off for privacy. What would you or others on here recommend, or alternatively definitely not do !

I went looking on your channel because I knew I should see a video from you - it's Saturday evening. This is what I look to for entertainment! So first video and apparently it had been 'uploaded' 58 seconds before. Great timing. I want some motion detectors and am looking at the tiny Aqara ones. I'll have to see if you've done any videos on those. I'm also replacing my ancient Wemo switches for some Meross ones. Project 'Automate the house' seems to be a never ending one.

I haven't done anything specific on them though they have featured. My only issue with Aqara is that it's hard to know which stuff will and which stuff won't work with home assistant and the echo built in zigbee hub. Some does and some doesn't and the products look identical!

No change yet. 😞 It's frustrating that the extra features of the door sensor (motion, button press and light sensor) aren't available to Alexa routines. I complained about it to Switchbot 2 months ago and they said they'll considerate it in a future update. The more people who complain directly to Switchbot, the better the chance they'll implement it.

Paul, i've looked into home assistant integrations (basic and custom) and i see there is an integration (there is an official integration to switchbot even at the moment you're recording (recorded) this very video. I haven't tested the integration so i don't know if it's good or not... But if the official integration doesn't work you can always try the hacs one (Home Assistant Community Store)... Hey there, any chance you could do a video on the best light switches and sensors for home assistant. Just started and was wondering about what to use in different cases: 1. Simple on and off (like for pantry rooms or closets) - I was thinking Ikea sensor but not sure which switch would be best as you don't need anything fancy here 2. Sensor and switches for locations used more often like hallways and kitchens 3. Sensors and switches for more customizable lighting such as living room, bedroom, office... (I assume these will also need smart bulbs to change colors...) Thank you so much

Love it as usual. However this malarkey about knowing when someone is home or has left the house is silly. It's silly malarkey. Most of these things work fine if you are the only inhabitant but forget having a partner or kids. Pretty obvious we all need RFID tags implanted in our necks to do real presence detection. Okay, okay, maybe an ankle strap. Cheers.

Yeah. I love my Nest thermostats that I've had for five or so years. But, quickly figured out their geofencing has a drawback; it can't read minds. It's great that the heat or AC shuts off when both wife and I are out of the house. But, there are many times when one or both of us return home for just a short period of time. The Nests don't know that we'll be gone again shortly and start heating or cooling. It's a waste. And, contradicts their "energy saving" claims. So, what is it that I like about the Nests so much: 1) They work. 2) They've been very reliable. 3) I don't have to get off my arse and go upstairs to change the settings. 4) I can check on conditions at home when outside the house and I can change the settings if appropriate. Like a half hour out on a very cold day when coming home from a trip. It will be nice and warm when we arrive home. Actually, this applies to any scheduling features on any automation system. In today's world, our schedules are seldom all that consistent and algorithms can't accurately anticipate changes in advance most of the time.

I do pretty much the same, however if the port is open... well it'll turn on again and look at your face. For security, it's mostly network security. There is the "Xiaomi Mi Home Security 360 Degrees 2K Pro Two-Way Day/Night Wireless Camera" which is almost the idential twin of the switchbot camera. It can store the storage over NAS and can be integrated with the HomeAssistant. I've been running multiple cameras in the house now that turn on when we are connected to a specific wifi. We aren't using the geofencing as the wifi was a better option for me since if we are in a different room it would be an easier trigger for me to set the camera to turn on automatically. Price of this device is higher though. From Malta it's at €50.

I'm still not on board with inside cameras. I think I would need a physically required cover that couldn't be done over the internet at all, then in order so I don't forget to cover when I am home - possibly a digital reminder to make sure I cover the cameras when home. (Maybe like a glass candle cover that's painted). If the cover can be put on and off over the internet, seems that makes it just as susceptible to being hacked versus if it required a physical action to cover the camera.

Hi Paul, I love SwitchBot products, but I'm annoyed that most of it is BT dependandt. I didn't see in the video which it is based on?

There looks to be a lot of features and parameters that can be setup throughout the SwtichBot app and some of them are exposed to Alexa. How many of them are available via SmartThings and Home Assistant?

But does this camera protect against hackers? Online all says to "change fefault passwords" but all my cameras (calex through smart life app) has NO password settings. Eg what if this was hacked and the hacker just disabled the privay thing.. Or spies om your home when your not home? And learn when your out etc? I know im probably paranoid with these what ifs

You know, a firewall with decent security would of suited this too (pfsense). Oh Paul, this is why we have monitoring systems on our home network to defend against hackers. Good vid tho, could of explained a little more as to how this happened, just in case someone else is out there with open ports too. Have a good day bud

... so each and every time you're "getting it on" in the bedroom amazon knows because you have disabled the cameras (and alexa is listening anyways...). Brilliant :-)

I'm still clueless when it comes to security. I have 2 doorbells (front and back) and a P,T,Z looking onto the garden. All connected to my internet hub. Is there anything else I can do within the hub setting to decrease risk of them being viewed?

Paul, how well does the door sensor light sensor work? I have a bunch of garbage ones from other vendors that suffer too fast sensitivity. What parameters can one set? Is the light sensor integrated into Alexa or even Smartthings?

Looking at the software that is running while viewing the camera, looks like a tuya rebranded product. Could this be added to tuya app and thus into home assistant?

Didn't need any of this, but holy sh*7 what a bargain :D For just a little over €100,- I just got this Cam, the hub, a door sensor, a motion sensor and 6 nfc tags... 🤯 Thanks Paul!

@@chipbeef9694 Ok, so I scanned them with an NFC reader and they come up as NXP NTAG216 / Mifare Ultralight. I've read the records that the Switchbot app wrote to it and then copied them to a Mifare Desfire (EV1 4K) card and that worked fine too.

@@B-a_s-H Have you tried to use a generic tag with it?
@B-a_s-H
@B-a_s-H 2 жыл бұрын
@@chipbeef9694 I consider the Desfire card to be fairly generic (so, yes). In the end it's the smartphone app that interprets the data, so as long as your phone's NFC reader can read the tag you're providing you should be solid.

Never keep any cameras inside your home ptz or otherwise (cameras inside robot cleaners) The same way the camera go to privacy mode someone might controll it to exit that privacy shutter mode, even covering it manually one day you will forget
