@@jacked6 they're buying cars. That's pretty cool. I know people complain about traffic but having a car is the ultimate dream. That was very rare before like Paul said. In the US the middle class is shrinking. life is not getting better it's getting WORSE. And you might be okay with that but not me. I love my country and I want my son to grow up in the same prosperous and safe country I did.

No. Not even close. Have you actually visited the Philippines? There isn't a middle class. Car ownership has grown but it is not anything comparable to the USA. There wouldn't be Jeepneys, scooters, and tricycles if car ownership was rising to the level of the USA.
@jacked6
@jacked6 3 ай бұрын
@@col.cottonhill6655 well if you think it's rough living in US then it's 10 times worst than poverty strict countries like Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, most of Africa, Eastern Europe. Unemployment in US still near rock bottom and salaries are far more than what you get even in Canada, Australia, anywhere else in world. The biggest companies to invest in are in US. Invest when you're young you become millionaires easy by middle age. It's so easy here to start business too. Absolutely zero excuses. Many citizens from these less fortunate counties would do anything possible for a visa here and better life. Cars are what broke people buy to stay broke forever.

75 year old expat in Bataan, lived here over 10 years. A lot of changes in that time. Thankful I have a Filipina wife who navigates all the pitfalls for me. Hate to be here on my own. Still get some hi Joe's and smiling kids. cheap bus tour to Vigan and Bagiou last week, going to Bohol-Cebu in 3 weeks. Wife loves it. Great place to grow old. Still can't speak Tagalog but wife loves to talk so now problem. lol Beautiful country and so green. Don't miss my years of desert living and no cold ever except for air con.

Regarding your comment about young guys not finding it as easy to find a good woman, I had heard on Philippines videos years ago that many younger girls prefer more mature men because they are less likely to cheat and they are better positioned to take care of them. I wonder if the pandemic really drove home that second point for some of these girls. That when bad stuff happens in life, which it inevitably does, they are better off with a guy who has some resources to help them weather the storm. Good to see your vids, as always Paul! Hope you and Mae are enjoying life to the fullest!

I wonder if there are just SO MANY expats in Dumaguete now, that the novelty has worn off for the local gals, and they sort of know they don't have to "settle" for a less desirable guy because the menu of choices they have to pick from is much larger now. They don't have to settle for the guy that's 40 years older and has a 40 BMI.
@mick-berry5331
@mick-berry5331 3 ай бұрын
Well, I think the reason of these behavioral changes are multifold: Society rapidly changes with the arrival of the new middle class. It brings more choices to all those females out there and I'm not only referring to the kind of foreigners available to them, but also choices in their lives in general have opened up. All of these changes are vastly increased in speed by the ready access to the digital world everybody enjoys nowadays. The smarter girls realize they might be able to create income online equalling or exceeding their take-home salary in a local job. They learn about life in other countries, their horizon widens... All that contributes to the changes we're seeing now. My two cents after a month in the Philippines in December last year. Paul and Mae have a great time! 😂

The "new" middle class is most likely not wealthy, but have easy access to credit and they want to say "look at me". If and when the economy takes another hit they will find themselves underwater and in a lot of debt. It's best to live within your means. This can be difficult for a lot of people. Keep up the great work Paul.

SAME ON PALAWAN , NO PARKING , HUGE TRAFFIC PROBLEMS .
@rcole1907
@rcole1907 3 ай бұрын
The key to Palawan is living just outside the city or maybe an hour (easy no traffic drive) to the city proper. Even if you compare Palawan traffic to Manila/Cebu - well there is no comparison. One of the reasons we chose it was that even in the city traffic could be so much worse than it is. Parking is not good there for sure, but eventually you'll find your go to spots to park and just walk to places and of course the malls have good parking so no issues there.

I was in PH last year and I was sitting at my hotel Breakfast in Dumaguete with 4 other foreigners and we all have been there for at least a couple of weeks and none of us had any dates or prospects. I haven't been there in 2017 to compare but I can say that it seems difficult to find a girlfriend in Dumaguete and on top of that finding one that is a compatible to you. Maybe in reality I have to stay for several month to figure it out. But it definitely wasn't girls everywhere and having different dates everyday for me and the expats I talked to. I think a part of it is in Dumaguete there are so many expats people don't care anymore and no more stares and no interest. Maybe bigger towns or more remote towns is the answer.

Excellent video and reflection Paul, thanks for sharing. I believe part of the dynamics of dating or meeting people is due to expansion of social media, people have more of a tendency to live their lives through social media now, instead of actually getting out and finding social interaction.

Another excellent video, Paul. You consistently share balanced points of view. It looks like overall, living conditions and lifestyle in Dumaguete have improved for many people over the last 7 years. Unfortunately, in the US, most cities have experienced sharp increases in the cost of living, with a corresponding decline in quality of life. Worse than the economic changes, there are more gun deaths, drug overdoses and homelessness in the vast majority of cities. Over 1.8 million Americans are incarcerated: this is not a record we can be proud of. Life for retirees continues to get harder each year.

Crime and "gun deaths" are increasing in cities where prosecutors refuse to charge habitual criminal with multiple violent felonies, and release them back on the streets (again, and again ). There ARE many reasons for crime. But FAILURE to prosecute viiolent habitual felons is a big one. . . And yes there really IS a relationship between incarceration rates and viollent crime.

Another Great video Paul, On the car boom issue, it was a combination of several issues, the banks were facing a crisis, the car importers and dealerships had massive unsold stocks ( 1000’s of vehicles standing in Laguna and batangas in stock yards) putting the dealers on the edge of insolvency, so the government reduced a lot of the restrictions on car ownership, ( previously you needed to own an off road parking / garage area). The government allowed the banks to waive / dilute the financial checks for lines of credit so along with the car sales boom there was also a property sales boom raising property prices, 60% of which have now been foreclosed/ repossessed and sit with banks at way over inflated prices as the banks are selling for the cost plus interest prices… I have heard of several cases where families have purchased from the banks without doing due diligence and have immediately realised the property has devalued by up to 50%… Certainly “It’s more fun in the Philippines.”😂😂

I live in Thailand & here there are many beautiful cars & trucks owned by Thais & there are also a lot of repossessions of those cars. It's a lot easier to finance a car or condo here than it is to get a credit card. When either get repossessed, the borrower finds he's built no equity in them & title returns to the bank

You are correct, sir. Really, the 'whys' might be interesting for those with a curious demeanor, but it's changed and probably will never go back to the pre-pandemic ways. When I reflect, the charm and ease have faded significantly. Housing, perhaps the predominant reason many Westerners come to the Philippines, has accelerated past the 'bargain days'. Traffic congestion is a moving obstacle course - not for the faint of heart or those with a low tolerance for the "I don't need no stink'n rules." style of drivers. (I've noticed a significant increase in dented cars this year.) I suspect there's an increase in turnover afoot; ex-pat residents in the range of 5+ years of Dumaguete life considering or in the process of moving. My feeling is the city is going to struggle with finding positive ways to adapt fast enough to avoid the problems growth brings.

Paul, thanks again for your informative videos. I can't be sure as to why it may have become more difficult for the younger expats to meet someone; being I have limited experience with Fillipinas; having I never yet the opportunity to visit the Philippines; but if I had to guess what I would think from what you have just stated, it's the better standard of living that they are having recently. Being that "desperation is the mother of invention". I would speculate that there's probably a lot less desperation taking place in the Philippines lately that would necessitate the younger women to put out so freely in order to try and better their's and their families financial status. Or maybe the females are just becoming wiser from word of mouth from other ladies who've had bad experiences with those so called "Butterflies". But either way, good for the Philippines, I'm glad to hear that their economic situations may be improving; or could it be a richer country (let's just guess China for example) maybe offering the poorer Philippine nation a credit trap? I haven't a clue, this is all just speculations. Thanks again and best wishes to you and your wife Baby Mae. P.S. If; God willing; you're still above ground and you and your wife are still married another nine years or so to bring the total of marriage length to ten years; or you two are blessed with offspring; will she be eligible to collect your SS sooner or later? Just curious, because I'm aware that's how it works in the states, not too sure about how it would work for an expat in a foreign land such as yourself. Any information on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, which I'm often told is worth two pesos, Dumaguete is of course booming with foreigners and for good reasons we all know about. But sure a few of those people are going to get in trouble in the Philippines and very likely those same people have been in trouble in the US or wherever they are from. You cannot escape stupidity by going to the Philippines, but should it continue to be so newsworthy by all these vloggers, of course not, but it gets views and heck for some has even paid some bills of theirs. We often talk about retiring to the Philippines for a quieter more relaxing life, but that can also translate into some boredom from time to time and between a way to make some pesos and the slower lifestyle this is news because its excitement for a lot of people. Is Dumaguete still a great place to move to...of course it is - only more expats than most places that aren't Manila or Cebu! If that's your cup of tea no problem. Different strokes for different folks. For me its farmland and quietness in Palawan. Thanks Paul!
