The arguments for and against building by-passes, featuring Transport Minister Ernest Marples, how these can be built through many urban areas, how objections to new routes can be overcome and what effect they are having on previously swamped towns and villages.

Wow, Ministry of Transport, St Christopher House, Southwark Street. Never thought I'd see that place on KZfaq. Long gone now, was demolished ages ago. Worked in the Traffic Engineering Division there from 1972 to 1978, this video stirred up a few old memories.

That was a tramp or rather 'gentleman of the road' walking down the street. Used to see them often passing through villages, always generally polite and well spoken fellows.

There were mechanical calculators back then. They even used them to design the bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

2:05 Ernest Maples the real villain behind the Beeching cuts. Family business - road building. Our severely overcrowded, gridlocked roads, towns and cities, increasing danger and pollution while vital alternative rail routes are now grass tracks is all down to this man!

I agree. I wonder if a latter-day Marples would be able to get away with it today?

Ahh yes, a conflict of interests which = corruption and the loss of many railway lines

The problems started before Marples. One of the previous Ministers of Transport in the 1950s (my best guess is it was Harold Watkinson but don't quote me) had forbidden BR to raise their fares or freight movement costs as an attempt to control inflation whilst BR's costs rose and market share fell. This price control failed to have the desire effect, but did take a railway that was almost breaking even to one losing £300,000 per day.

Yes, Marples, trashing the countryside with roads that his construction interests profited from, then ripped the heart out of the railways through his mate Beeching.

Yes, I look Marples up on wiki out of curiosity and he had to do a runner to avoid being prosecuted for a massive tax fraud. I was highly amused to read that he was involved in the sex scandals of the early 60s. Apparently he like to be whipped while dressed as a woman - definitely weird

Stevie. Instead of criticism, why not offer a solution? Here's the problem, rising population, increase in car and vehicle ownership, a heaving railway infrastructure and people's wish to travel for leisure. Any suggestions?

They are pushing more for this electric car with puppets like Elon Musk, which isn't new nor eco friendly because they use the same mining as with fossil fuels, basically it's a big con. I think the aim for electric motors is one of increase restriction of travel, the car will eventually be remotely monitored and controlled and you will only be able to travel where they tell you.
